Just did this on my 98 Cavalier. Just a couple additional tips. 1. You don't have to unbolt the lever from the transmission. 2. Remove the battery and entire airbox. This gives you much more room for your arm and pliers. (To remove the airbox, you'll have to pop a plastic push fastener to remove a fuse panel by the windshield washer fluid reservoir). Then you don't have to unbolt any of the other stuff and you get yourself way more room. The nickel trick mentioned below also helps. Also, add some grease to the bushing for it to go in easier. Once pressed in, grease the pin from the lever that goes into the bushing. It's also much easier pressing the cable onto the lever when the lever is bolted to the transmission vs. holding it.

Thanks for insight , I'm about to do this , hard to see clearly so " don't unbolt the lever ...: I'm wondering, the pin will pop out the hole ( to access the bushing) without unbolting anything ? If I haven't explained well enough for you to answer it's ok , I'll probably see once I get in there. + edit. Should the lever be loosened a little for enough play to separate the cable from the lever or....just pop it out ?

Even easier, go to where the shift cable attaches to its plate towards the exhaust and remove the metal holding clip; squeeze the tabs and pop the cable and end out. The cable will reach to almost where the spark plugs go. Now you can clean out where the bushing goes, grab a 9/16 socket and a clamp. Put the round bottom end of where the bushing goes into the 9/16 set your bushing up, and close the clamp. That’ll push it in nice and even, no major issues, And then simply pop the cable clip back into place, along with its retainer, connect the end of the cable to the shift actuator, and you’re all done. Do it with a cold engine if you can, I just did this in the O’Reilly’s parking lot, and that exhaust was a little warm.

Good video. Just did this to my 04 cavalier. My small lady hands allowed me to not have to remove almost anything to do the job. I like how you got the camera right in to show exactly what you were doing. It made my job much easier and faster, because I understood exactly what needed to be done.

Great video. Wish I had watched this first. I tried yesterday to put the new bushing in without removing any parts. Thought I could slide my hand in between things to put the bushing in. I tried over an hour trying to squeeze the bushing in. Wrapped tape around the bushing and rubber holder to hold in place while I tried to squeeze it in with plyers. Didn't work. Not enough room. All I accomplished was getting bruises and cuts on my hands. Thought it would save me a step from removing all the parts. Gave up and felt defeated. Today I have the proper tools, and need to remove all the parts. Sure it's not as easy as it looks, but I have a better chance now of doing it right by removing parts first. Never did this type of job on a car, or anything like this under the hood. Bushings cost $10.99 from Advanced Auto. I could imagine what it would cost to have a mechanic fix it. I liked the idea of putting a nickle over the bushing first then using plyers. Should take a picture first of everything before I remove the parts, just incase I don't remember where it al goes back again. Just getting my self psyched up to attempt it now. Great comments from everyone on some tricks to get it done. Your video was very helpful as I now give it a try. Thanks for sharing the video. Will let you know how I make out.

Yea it's a tight fit in there for sure also use some silicone spray on bushing before trying to push it in will help it slide into place it's a pain to do but worth it it's been fine ever since my mother-in-law is still driving that car

If you do not have flat ended pliars you can use a nickle to put on top of the bushing to push it in easy. I used a Nickel to put on top of the new bushing made it alot easier. Also make sure all of the old bushing is out of the end of the shifter arm.

Stevens suggestion about using a nickle helped me I scotch tapped the nickle to my pliers. Also scotch tape bushing onto cable until you get it fitted then cut tape off.

Looks like those bushings are made out of polyurethane, which is used in performance bushings and motor mounts.
