Listen to that dead lifter. Its common to hear your lifters ticking on a early morning cold start with these trucks that goes away after a few seconds. The real problem happens when it doesn't go away. You may still be in luck though with just a quick cleaning. This truck is too late and the damage is already done. I will be having another video soon showing the cleaning process you can try so stay tuned!

You have no oil pressure and hydraulic lifters, they are gonna be noisy. Remove the oil pan and replace the oil pump pick up tube o-ring. They usually start to go bad around the 150k-200k. To verify you can add extra oil, 3-4 quarts and jack the rear of the truck up to put the oil to the front of the pan, and above the o-ring, start it up and see if your pressure is better.

When you have lifter noise in these motors,, check your oil pressure. If its around 30lbs, you have to put a new o-ring on the oil pickup tube into the oil pump and clean the debris clogging the pickup screen.When done, your oil pressure should go back up to 45 lbs.Dont forget to flush the gunk out using transmission fluid, kerosene, or whatever brand you use.

I’ve had many of these trucks with the 5.3s and 4.8s, the only time the oil pressure sits around and above 40 is when you’re driving. It sits between 35-38 at idle generally, and at or just above 40 when driving

Like the guys are saying here. I have fixed two by simply replacing the $8 pick up tube “O” ring. They flatten and crack. It’s like sucking through a straw with a hole in it. The “O” ring and gasket from dealer very inexpensive. Go after that before thinking you have bearing or pump issues. I removed valve cover before and after and immediately saw the oil in the front. Before the ring change the oil never made it to the top end of 1 and 3. Good luck.

My first thought was that the noise was coming from excessive valve lash, but then I thought all GM V/8's had hydraulic lifters, so then I concluded that with that oil pressure being that low the engine has some severe oil bleeding somewhere. I would not drive that truck with oil pressure that low. This assessment is coming from arm chair mechanic!

My truck has 252xxx miles on its 5.3. only issue it has is a bit of oil consumption issue between changes. It uses 1 to 1.5 quarts of oil. Had a bit of lifter noise then checked oil level. That's when it was low. Filled back up to a hair under 6 quarts and it's purrrring like a cat again.

To prevent lifter & oil pressure problems in LS engines , add 1/4 of a qt of automatic transmission fluid to the crankcase 100 miles before you change the oil & filter....do this on every oil change 3 to 5000 miles, this is the easiest fix for any pushrod engine..!

Please tell me what is the purpose of the trans fluid and how does it help? Don't say detergent or that it cleans the sludge.
@Wildkat-1

@@danieljames5875 The lifter oiling holes are small in those engines, any kind of dirt will keep the lifter from pumping-up and working correctly....Did you notice how low the oil pressure is..? my 2001 5.3 holds 40-60 psi all of the time , the truck in the video has a pick-up tube in the oil pan with a leaking o-ring ( my guess ) ....? I also flush my oil system with diesel fuel before oil changes ...300k runs like new ...! Automatic transmission fluid is high detergent ...and will help cut the varnish build-up on parts..!
@danieljames5875
@danieljames5875 2 жыл бұрын
@@Wildkat-1 yes the o ring is probably screwed. But trans fluid is not the answer for anything. If you do your research you will find that most engine oils have 15 to 20 times the detergent that trans fluid does. Also trans fluids base oil is 0 weight so u are also thining the oil. Trans fluid doesnt need lots of detergent because their is no carbon buildup in a trans. If u want the most detergent in a motor oil then u would find in research that mobile 1 has the most detergent of the bunch. not that I'm recommending that. Fix the o-ring and go from their.

I had the same problem on my 06 crew cab Z71. I tried all the motor flushes that I seen on previous KZfaq channels. It’s seem to go away just a little bit but would come back it got louder and louder. After doing tons of research and learning about the GM piston slap. It is due to the cast iron block and the oversize skirts on the Pistons that will tap until the truck is heated up. This was not the case in my truck. I ended up calling and putting new LS seven a listers new lift her tray and new pushrods. I have drove it now for over 40,000 miles and zero sound. I also noticed before I done the work on it my all pressure would hardly get up to 40 pounds only if I was deep into the gas pedal. Now since the works been done I can barely tap it in my old gauge will get up over 40 every time I’m dealing with a front differential problem now after the truck being lifted. Also the slapping under the dash is the intermediate steering shaft had to change that as well. That should have been covered under GM as well. Seems they are only building for looks now not durability and sound lol

@@chevyss18 I’ve got the same problem right now. I believe these trucks have hydraulic roller lifters, so a lifter has probably collapsed and is not making good contact between the push rod and cam lobe. My truck started doing this when driving not long after my oil pressure dropped down to about 18 psi. The pick up seal can flatten out and allow air to pass through, reducing pressure. However usually it will be an oil pump going bad, at least in my experience.

Oil pump was done by previous owner but upon install of the new oil pump the pickup tube o-ring was torn and this resulted in very low oil pressure. I cant speak too much for the newer models besides a 2010 Silverado 5.3 ran mobil 1 full synthetic since new at day 1 and at 100k miles the lifter and cam lobe on cylinder 8 went (cylinder 8 is a non AFM lifter) I do agree with using rislone and have heard of people using all sorts of things from a quart of ATF to MMO or anything very high in detergent which is why royal purple and other types of oils may have extra detergents in there to help clean out dirt sludge and varnish. I just rid my '05 1500 5.3 of the tapping noise. What I notice is whenever someone removes the valve cover, there is a copper or dark film. Makes me thinks there is "sticktion" going on. I solved by running Marvel prior to oil change (oil went from clean looking to black). Then used Marvel in the fuel. Went on several 100+ mile drives, and all gone. Mine has 120,000 and bought it for "when you need a truck" and it sits for a few weeks without being started. I will be running it at least once a week now.

It's a well known fact that 99' gmc sierra's have a problem with lifter and valve ticking. Why has there not been a recall on this problem? GMC needs to step up and recall these vehicles back and fix these problems and do the right thing. It's obvious that there is a design flaw and should have been fixed before they even put these vehicles out to sell. They don't mind taking our money but they won't stand behind their product that they sell.

@RussellBooth1977

You should far more oil flowing out of the lifters than that ! When I was diagnosing the lifter noise in my LS1 engine oil was squirting out of the lifters everywhere, I tested the oil pressure when warm which was 30 PSI at idle,40 @ 2000 RPMs & 60 @ 4000 RPM's so that was all good. In your case, it could be a bad oil pump or engine bearings,in my engine,the lifters got a bit mushroomed & stuck in the lifter bores. So,I'm going to replace all of the lifters. I know in my dads car he fitted a used Buick L36 V6 engine which they had taken the oil pump off. All of the lifters rattled on startup & no oil made it up to the top of the engine so we hooked up an oil pressure gauge to test it at the oil pressure switch port. There must've been an air pocket in the oil galleries because the oil pressure shot up to 60 PSI @ idle speed as they have a high volume oil pump fitted standard.

@FantasyCustoms4Life 5 жыл бұрын
You will have to watch my follow up video on this truck. It was a bad oil pickup tube o-ring causing the low oil pressure. I do agree that it could have also been a bad oil pump or engine bearing causing the low oil pressure condition. Thanks for your comment.
@RussellBooth1977
@RussellBooth1977 5 жыл бұрын
When I pulled the oil gallery drain plug out a few years ago a fair bit of alluvial sand (grains of dirt) came out with the oil so that could've also been causing the problem, at the moment, the cylinder head gaskets & head bolts are still on the way & I was held up with the timing cover side because with the gasket kit I was supplied with a rear main seal instead of a front crankshaft seal, also the oil pickup tube o ring wasn't supplied so I ordered them separately.

Dealerships are huge money and corporate is even bigger. I think it often comes down to greed when this stuff happens and started with someone’s incompetence or cutting corners, a lot of times even just are flaws from manufacture showing up. I have never been blessed with having the money to buy new or even new enough to have a warranty but someday I will get my shot. You have a good eye. No one ever really asked me for the full history that I was told about this truck. I bought the truck as a parts truck, never talked to the owner but his friend told me that the owner had the heads worked, fresh oil pump installed and a new water pump. First thing I noticed was a cracked frame and asked about it to which this was news to them apparently and price wasn’t negotiable so I left, the price was too high at the time because I knew it was no longer street able and was destined for parts and the graveyard. So after another few weeks go by I get a call saying he’s going to lower the price and it sounds like something I would maybe agree on for a parts vehicle. I get back over to look at the truck again and I ask to hear it run (didn’t hear it the last time) he starts it up to which it’s ticking and the oil pressure is nothing just like in the video. After haggling over another $100 for the piece of junk I buy the truck (it has no brakes and I almost crash it at the end of the driveway due to blown brake line) I get it home towed the rest the way and diagnose the motor down to this pickup o-ring. He must have pinched the o-ring trying to get the pickup tube installed when installing the new oil pump. After that oring repair the motor was strong and I had some fun with the truck and parted it out. Cheers

Did you ever get this figured out? I have had this exact issue on my 5.3 since the day I bought it a year and a half ago. I have spent a ton of hours researching and this is the first time I've ever seen anyone with the same issue. Runs fine, about 5 minutes in, lifter tick starts, about 5 minutes later and it will never do it again until the engine cools off. MMO helped me the first time and then came back after a couple of months before the next oil change.
@drchris75169
@drchris75169 6 жыл бұрын
Fairly certain it is a valve with crud stuck to it. I've had 2 friends that are mechanics listen to it and had me cal a buddy of theirs that is a chevy hot rod guru. He listened over the phone and told him step by step what was going on. He said if it was a lifter it would do it at start up, being it only does it shortly before full running temp he recommended putting aerosol SeaFoam thru it but 2 cans at the same time and let it sit for 2 hours not a few minutes. The sound went away for 2 days and almost undetectable for several more days. He said it is common on these engines and said to find a place that sells gas with no ethanol in it, haven't found that yet. I have thought about running tranny fluid in the oil for a few miles then change it out but hot rod guru said if the Seafoam helped that it is valve not the lifter.
@Jonnypunk00
@Jonnypunk00 6 жыл бұрын
You're a life saver man, thanks for the reply! I tried b-12 chemtool down into the lifter with no luck and was finally starting to get worried. So you did 2 cans of aerosol into the intake while idling before its at running temp correct?

I had it up to running temp but had a friend hold the pedal down enough to keep it from choking down. Was told that it might and to have it revved up just a little and expect a lot of white smoke. It tried to choke down a little but never saw the white smoke. I still get the tick but it does not last as long and plan on doing the same thing again. And you are welcome, wished I had a more permanent solution. If I do come across more I will put it on here.

@FantasyCustoms4Life
@FantasyCustoms4Life 3 жыл бұрын
A worn stretched timing chain can cause the timing to be off. It will show up more after the engine gets warm it will loose power, lower mpg, cause it to have a rough idle, and get a clatter to it all due to the timing being off because of the stretched chain/worn sprockets. I see stretched timing chain less often than lifter issues but isn’t impossible and if it has the other symptoms then is likely the chain and not lifter. Thanks

I would say that sounds different than most of my "normal" lifter ticking issues on 95% of these trucks that I have had (over 15 trucks 4.8, 5.3 & 6.0). For me the noises on most these trucks have always gone away within a minute of starting the vehicle. If you are driving and are hearing noises come and go I would think you have a more severe lifter problem or possibly some other problem and may want to attempt to do some lifter cleaning/motor flush to help prolong your motor life and not have to open it up. Once the noise comes for good there is likely permanent damage done to in my case both the lifter that was struggling and also if left run like that for any time at all, the cam lobe with respecting lifter will end up damaged as well. I have a new video coming out shortly on replacing the lifters and also replacing the camshaft on these engines. Thanks

I have lifter tapping now coming from the left side of my 6.0 2001 lt chevy suburban. My oil pressure is at 40 while idling and goes up about 60 when driving. Also it gets weird sometimes when idling (gets a little rough.) What must I do? Thanks.

You might need to pull your head and check/replace the lifters and also check the cam lobes out as well.

That is great news! I’ve had to deal with manifold issues before on these engines as well. On mine it would start right up normal but then either immediately die or you could hit the throttle and it would idle roughly for a few extra seconds before stalling. I have another video posted on here about how I diagnosed it was a manifold leak and then when I went to repair normally it’s just bad intake manifold gaskets. well after putting the new updated gasket on it was only slightly better but still the same. I then sourced a junkyard intake manifold and installed it reusing the new intake gaskets I bought and it was back to perfect running condition. So in my case the plastic intake manifold was actually warped. Thanks for the comments! Best of luck. Video of me showing how to find the manifold leak or any vacuum leaks. m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pdehhtGgmsidmqM.html

@@FantasyCustoms4Life we have two broken bolts on the drivers side, and one broken bolt on the passenger side. The leak so far is on the left. Now will this cause issues because sometimes my suburban decides to idle rough (shop couldn't find the cause sheesh)

Normally nothing to worry about except with the lifter tick along with it makes me wonder. What’s the gauge reading?

@@bryannevarez8408 Yes I would pull your lifters and look them over if any wear look down that lifters tray and see if the cam lob is possibly bad too.
