Quick tip- When the transmission overheats, shift to neutral, set the parking brake, and let the engine idle until the temp comes down. Depending on the transmission, shifting to park may be the exact wrong thing to do when it overheats because some transmissions don't circulate fluid through the cooler while in park. Not sure if that applies to your transmission, but every transmission I know of circulates fluid through the cooler in neutral, so unless you know that your specific transmission circulates fluid through the cooler in park, I would shift it to neutral instead of park if it overheats so I know that fluid is circulating through the cooler. Hope this helps you or someone else

What's a normal temperature when towing?
@averyalexander2303
@averyalexander2303 4 жыл бұрын
@@Rolando083Unfortunately there is no simple answer. It depends on the vehicle and the conditions such as how close you are to maximum towing capacity and where you are measuring the temp, these factors can change the answer dramatically. For example, a light duty vehicle towing maximum capacity through big mountains in 100+ degree heat with no cooler other than the one in the radiator may easily see temps of 250 degrees or more at the pan, but a heavier duty vehicle with a good external trans cooler towing half it's rated capacity on flat ground in cool weather may never go past 160 at the pan. If you are measuring the temp of the fluid going to the cooler, you may see a temp 50+ degrees higher than the temp in the pan under heavy loads like accelerating hard from a stop towing maximum capacity up a steep grade. Most (not all) OEM transmission temp sensors measure the temp of the fluid in the pan. Under 200 degrees is ideal, every 20 degrees you go above 180 cuts the fluid's life in half, so adding a transmission cooler or upgrading the OEM unit to a larger one is a good investment if you are regularly seeing much high temps than that and you want the longest transmission life possible. Hope this helps

Yeah but if it doesnt lower for an hour or whatever and youre talking with onstar and they just say the transmission needs to be serviced.... you have to figure out wtf is going on... idling the engine ran my truck at that high trans fluid temperature and probably did more damage....i opened the hood and saw the fans in a struggle to spin like they were broken or thd fan clutch was broken.... i shut the truck down for a while with the hood open. (Canada temps -0celcius) and it cooled down in 15 minutes or less to 117c from 130 c i then was able to drive home after 3 hours of cursing and frustration....the fans worked fine once it cooled down. So why the f did they choose to not work then? Gm put the wrong tbv. Transmission bypass valve in them. It should have bee. 70cpm or w e units. But its a 90 cpm cfm ? That is installed from the factory.....another $200 part they should give us for free. Its easily accessible and easy to switch out from underneath the truck. Good work gm. You assholes

221F is no big deal. I remember seeing some chart somewhere on the internet saying that transmissions prefer temperatures of 160F and if you go above that, like 180, transmissions will have a life span of only 50k miles. Not only is that false, but the source of that chart is from a manufacturer of transmission coolers ( basically I'm saying it's someone who has an interest in convincing people to buy coolers ). I have 2 trucks, a Cummins and an old 6.5 Detroit Diesel. On the Cummins, Alldata says I don't have to worry about the transmission unless it hits 275F ( I don't let it hit 245, but I've yet to see it hit 220 ), and on the 6.5 it says don't panic until 260F ( this one doesn't have a gauge, just an idiot light on the dash ). When you get to about 40k or 50k miles, have the dealership change the fluid in the pan. Not a transmission flush, almost all try to sell that, even to a buddy of mine. Tell them to just drop the pan, change the filter and the pan gasket, and replace the fluid that came out, nothing more. Having the dealer do it leaves a service record that the transmission was serviced and that it was done by them, so if anything goes wrong, they can't say that the failure was due to improper servicing. By the way, did you keep your old wheels and tires? Anytime the truck goes back to the dealership, remove your big tires and slap on the factory ones, so that if anything goes wrong with the drivetrain they can't void it because it was abused by the big tires.

Just bought a 16 Silverado 1/2 ton 5.3 with 58.000 miles and only put 300 miles on the truck and seen metal in the transmission oil. Thank god for factory warranty!! Once when I get it back the transmission thermostat is getting removed. And the v4 to v8 is going away. The reason why they did this is so the oil will get less dense and to improve mpg.

Possible cause of your overheating issue.... U-haul box trailers are equipped with surge brakes. When you drive forward and step on your brake the weight of the trailer pushing against your hitch ball pushes a hydralic cylinder that turns on the trailer brakes. When you back up with the trailer, usually the brakes will not activateon level ground however when you back up on a grade the trailer brakes will drag. I have seen trailers with surge brakes lock up when a truck was backing a loaded trailer. With the trailer brakes dragging while backing up the torque converter in your truck will beat the transmission oil and heat it up fast, especially when there is little or no air going through the radiator which contains the transmission cooler. There is a lever on most surge brake systems that disables the piston that activates the surge brakes for the purpose of backing up the trailer. If you did disable the surge brakes before backing the trailer please disregard.

Wow so much horrible advice with no real knowledge was given to you. Your torque converter slips when you are moving slowly and even worse in reverse with a load behind it. Reverse is geared at 3.064 vs 1st gear at 4.027 so it will cause more torque converter slip/heat to get the load moving. 221 is nothing to worry about but in the future just put it in 4low in these situations and you'll never have elevated temps since the torque converter will be spinning fast enough to lock. FYI your thermostat definitely doesn't know what direction your truck is moving, it strictly open and closes based off of temp.

So the advice is to generate more heat with gearing it lower in 4wd?? An driving in 4wd at all times when hauling. Great advice, add trans cooler delete the inline thermostat, an if you have to change the tq to a better aftermarket one. Why generate more heat, in motor and trans am transfer case which higher rpms at all times in 4wd. These trucks tq is defective from the dealer an it’s hard to get them to replace it under warranty. Eventually the slipping is gonna send enough metal through your trans an trans pump causing major failure. Cooler thermostat an new tq on the after market side.

Converter lock up is controlled by the TCM, and never happens in reverse. It also pretty much never happens under a high throttle situation unless you have HPTuners or such and change the parameters. Best advice is to invest in HPTuners, Delete DoD/AFM, set 1-4 to never lock to save the converter, and only lock the TCC in 5-6 at low throttle. Bypass the cooler Tstat or invest in Superior Transmission part to set it to 135 if u live in cold environments, and install the LONG TRU_COOL 40k GWV LPD Transcooler. On my cammed 6.0 Denali I have the radiator bypassed also because it has a 3k Stall in it with a built 4l60e, my 14 Sierra has the stock converter and it daily driver so it goes thru the radiator also which warms it up fine in Southern cold weather. The weakness in the 6l80 is the converter from an OEM viewpoint, look at the TSBs.

Just drove my 2007 Suburban over 4500 miles pulling a 3900# Geo Pro camper. We went from Louisiana to Sequoia National Park and back, Temps ran up to 242 degrees on the transmission gauge several times for long periods, and about the same on the engine temp, Used the tow/haul button the entire time. Has factory installed tow package with trans cooler. Had some real hard pulls through NM, Ariz, and California with speed dropping down to 40's on a few grades 6. The vehicle has 281,000 miles and never had the fluid changed. I believe if you stay below 260 your fluid can survive, wonder how many more miles she may have in her?

Mine overheated a few times in the summer...it was able to cool down....but two nights ago the thing overheated but wouldnt cool down... once i got out of the way of speeding traffic coming off of the highway I barely got off of, I opened the hood to help cool it because its cold out...the rad fans were doing struggle to spin movement then spun once and stopped. Repeated that cycle for a while until i turned the truck off. Following their instructions on the dash (idle engine) for 2 hourz wasted half a tank of gas and ran the transmission at the high temperature for that long period of time.. once I was able to drive home....and it was cooled down to 117c. From 140.c. the fans were spinning like nothing ever happened. Freely and constantly. So anyone have any idea why the fans stopped when the most critical moments of needing that fan happened? Its not a relay or fuse because it works fine now.....DONT LET YOUR TRANSMISSION GET DAMAGED BY FOLLOWING GMS IDLE ENGINE TO COOL TRANSMISSION PROMPT SCREEN ON THE DCI!!! *****If it doesnt start lowering trans fluid temps while idling*****

I’ve since replaced the fluid with amsoil heavy duty trans fluid and did the thermostat bypass and it’s kept the temps way down. However if you live in a cold climate unless you use a fluid that can stay liquid at very cold temps like amsoil stays fluid up to -85f. If you use standard cheap fluid you’ll burn the trans up.

I know this is an old video but the major problem is with chevy silverado is that the GM sends transmission fluid into a side tank of radiator that sits at 210° . This is a problem because this is normal temp for the coolant but transmission fluid doesnt like this. Heat will transfer from that radiator to the side tank. Heat goes to a cooler place. Best thing you can do is eliminate that and install a stand alone cooler like the Derale cooler with fan. They work awesome

Dude 221f is not overheating a transmission. Especially if you are depending on the factory sensor which is normally in the valve body or post pump. Typically your trans pan temp is 10-25F lower as well. I wouldn’t even worry about the factory sensor location reading up to 235F+ and that’s still in the safe operating range.

@@joeyscott9250 Intermittently hitting that temp every once in a while isn't that bad for synthetic fluid. However, running that hot continuously will degrade the fluid twice as fast as running a 180 would, and if the fluid breaks down and isn't changed, the transmission's longevity will suffer. Every 20 degrees you go over 180 cuts the fluid's life in half. If I was regularly seeing temps of 195+ and I wanted the maximum possible longevity out of the transmission I would install a cooler, but that's just me. Hope this helps!

Got a question to ask? I have a 2012 Chevy Silverado 1500 lt 5.3 and the trans temp normally runs around 150 when driven normally but the recommended temp is supposed to be between 175 and 200 I had it up to 181 one time because I was driving aggressively! Gauge could be off, fluid could be a different viscosity than what’s recommended, or I’d say someone could’ve bypassed the thermostat keeping fluid running continuously to keep her more cool than stock if it’s preowned. Those would be my top guesses.

Cool vid bud. Never had that happen in reverse towing, so I never thought about that one, but mine had run hot since the day I drove her home. Did the t-stat mod myself a few years ago and ran duel coolers. 2014 Rocky Ridge(over priced ball and chain) Shakerado 5.3l This truck still had the original 3.42 gears in with a 6" lift, 35's on 20's and on it's 3rd torque converter when I finally made a few changes to GM's "brilliant"(insert sarcasm here) engineering. Has run low 120's cruising interstate for hours on end(weekly 5 hour commute) since except for a few abnormally scorching summer days got up to low 130's. You may not need duel coolers depending on tire size, gears(overall strain on driveline), but if you go that route make sure to run them in parallel with each other, otherwise the effects of the pressure drop will eventually show their ugly face in the pump(scouring) and TC. A couple manually switched or temp controlled fans for stop and go and a manifold with a manual bypass ain't a bad idea either. Had to make up a manifold winter before last since trans wouldn't get any hotter than 100.. Hope this is helpful. Apologies for writing a book. Fingers just won't quit adding shit.. lol

@@JohnWargo93 yes anytime your transmission fluid gets over 200 degrees it depletes the life of your transmission , it might not get 50000 miles out of it

my 2009 silverado, i pull 2 tons on a 16ft trailer, the temp goes up to and sometimes maintains 230f even 240. its been like that for years . is that bad?

Rob Calton should probably take a look at the transmission fluid and see what temp it’s rated for before losing its lubrication abilities.. a lot of ppl tell me to change it out if I ever come close to hitting 250 degrees

You should be fine. Newer fluid is rated to 260. If you had a 2005 or older truck, then it might be an issue

John Short thank you sir! I might go a little smaller soon myself, trying to start hot shotting cars and equipment. These 33x12.50s are a little uneasy for towing I think. Lol
