Chevy Traverse - Easy Fix for Radio Speakers not working due to water leaking onto door wire harness

It appears to be a common problem with Chevy Traverse and GMC Arcadia that water enters the wire harness connections on the doors when it rains. This is one easy solution to help keep water out.
Sorry about the video orientation, I can not get it to rotate to the correct position. UPDATE: Note the comments for more detail, but the speakers had to be replaced. Although there is a water issue, water was not the cause of this problem.

It stopped the water from entering the wiring harness switch at the door from the outside surface but I noticed that over time water still enters from the rear of the switch. This means that water must migrate from the roof area onto the rear surface of the switch. I have read that other people noticed this also and that it possibly comes from the roof rail screws. What did solve the problem was that I actually replaced the front two speakers. It was not all that difficult. There is a video that provides details on how to remove the door panels. Once you do one, the other is easy. Once I gained access to the speakers, I was able to confirm that the water issue was not the problem because the speakers were dry and had no evidence of being affected by the water at all. In fact, the rubber tube that is seen between the door and body frame where all the wires go through has a sag and that is where all the water sits and never gets to the speaker. I did notice that the wire on the speaker itself had partially decayed leaving what I suspect was copper dust, Upon replacing the speaker, I tested it and it work as new and continues weeks later. I checked the price for the speakers on Amazon and Rock Auto.com where I normally get car parts from and they were comparably priced. Just as a tip, the left (driver's side) speaker is the one that is used for hands free phone use and the audible back up and other alarms, so I would suggest to get that one first. Bottom line, the speakers are not good quality like so many other parts on this car and made to last only to a certain point then require replacement. I still left my " glued on covers" if anything, to help control the front surface water issue anyway. Best of luck with your car.

2014 slt bose premium 60k, Radio sound suddenly cut out, no signal sound, no back up camera sound. Thanks to posts here and acadia forum. Disconnected 4 door jam connectors. Moisture present inside 3 out of 4 connectors. Several ounces from drivers rear. Shake out water. 2 hours later all is working. I am making a list of repairs to do to prevent expensive component failure and dangerous situations. Will add sealing roof rack to the list. Will bike tube repair, after drying and dielectric grease. Will add a diverter inside for door speaker & wiring. Will seal inside door side of harness. What I have read about all water intrusion issues 2008 to 2018. Older vehicles had drains in rear fixed moon roof, many issues with those drains getting clogged and leaking in head rest. So they discontinued drains. The issues with leaks from same fixed moonroof with updated no drains. Fix is remove moonroof and new seals installed on body and edge of moonroof. Mostly older models or after windshield replacement leaks due to seal at bottom of windshield area into front floor. All models with sunroof have 2 drain tubes that run down the A pillars on both sides. Constant clogging. There is a rubber 90 degree grommet at middle to top of firewall on both sides that drain tubes attach to. Older models pre 2013 had a 4 tab water gate inside grommet to prevent spider nesting. (Bad idea). Gets clogged at that point and leaks. Fix cut out or melt out the 4 fingers inside grommett. Also most models, where water exits the firewall, on the outside under wipers cowel. The water drains down, then reenters passenger compartment a few inches below drain, through a horizontal body seam. You seal body seam from the wiper side of vehicle, up in hole, especially on passenger side. These water backups can cause drips onto fuse box on right side behind glove box. Drips on left side on top of steering column onto BCM and radio amp. Could short out many other connected components as well.

The speakers arent the problem if they are coming back on frequently after a couple days of warm weather. As a test open your door and disconnect the wire harness after a rain stom and let it hang (upside down) and you will witness water pouring out of the connector. My 2012 traverse had this problem as well. Take a shop vac and suck the water out of each end then use blow dryer to finish the process. After a little while (time may vary I'm not exact on how long) the speakers will all a sudden kick back on. I'm in process of replacing my lady's speakers just haven't had time and well been lazy. To prevent the water I'd say this video is good idea, the roof rack bolts filled with sealant and whatever else we can come up with to divert the water trail coming off the top.... Side note I've also read about the car amp is the main problem but it pissed me off and I haven't got back to checking the factory amp yet. So not even sure where that thing is. For gods sake I'm a doctor, not a pool man!! Enjoy your day of tweeter music

Definitely not the speakers. They did start operating after the weather warmed up.

In some cases yes this is a good fix but in most cases the leak is actually from the roof rack bolt holes, and also water leaking down from the windows and getting on the speaker connectors. Seems to me that the main issue is poor weather proofing all around the vehicle. What I've done is removed my roof rack bolts and put clear silicone in the holes and bolts them back down, as well as using some black weather proofing tape (ZIP tape is what I used) around the electrical connectors on the sides of the doors and inside the door panel. Replaced all 4 speakers and so far so good, will see how this holds up after a few more rain storms.

Also on the Buick Enclaves…..I was told I had to replace the whole module which is going to cost $750….even though radio is going on and off. Fought with dealership on this because it seems like a wiring “connection” problem because audio still works half the time. But…..I lost the argument and they are going to replace it. We will see.

I can’t go to a car wash or I lose sound. Tried different ways, protecting the connection. I don’t think it seeps in from the seal not installed correctly. Started washing at home and found when I clean my hood, water is coming in. No water or dew in mornings, my speakers work.

Does the turn signal sounds come out the driver side speaker as well? A year ago, there was a loud screeching noise coming out of the speakers. Radio wasn't putting out noise just a screech. The noise went away after a few days, but since then nothing comes out from the speakers, not even the turn signal noise. I'm wondering if it could be just the speakers.
