i LOVE that eric designed this recipe to be made by hand.... as someone that loves making cookies but doesnt have a stand mixer... i am overjoyed and grateful

I don’t either! I still use my mom’s hand mixer from 1955 that works like a charm . The motor exudes a slight pleasant odor of metal and grit along with the metal on metal sound when the beaters hit the bowl sides that inescapably takes me back to sugar cookie making in the 1960s.

it sounds silly but when eric said “this cookie is for when you really… want a cookie” I knew EXACTLY what he meant by that 😂 I’ve been there more times than I can count

Eric is so thoughtful. He has really internalized this m and m cookie. It's like a philosophical approach to cookies and baking. Can we have more content of Eric and his baking/cooking points of view?

I made these a a few nights ago, they were awesome. The kosher salt really acts as a little flair here and there, not overwhelming but a welcome surprise occasionally. I skipped the salt on top, and after eating them I do think that would have been too much for me.

Just made these last night, and they were so good! They come out chewy but crisp up quite a bit after cooling. If I made these again, I'd cut back the sugar a bit bc they were a little too sweet for me. Also, you can increase the amount of m&ms if you want, I almost doubled it. But other than those things, a very solid cookie

When I was looking at my various ginger molasses recipes for our Day After Thanksgiving party, I turned to my husband and said, “I have a great recipe for ginger molasses cake and a great one for cookies. Cookies just seem like a lot of bother for something to eat standing up.” You just end up stuffing your face mindlessly, whereas cake-even a snacking cake-always makes people smile. We had the cake. Three times. Once to test-plain-as my usual was a huge Bundt and I wanted a simpler, snacking cake for a smaller crowd. The second time I made a cream cheese frosting to dress it up for the Thanksgiving we went to (along with a chocolate cake my daughter asked me to bake). The third one I served with vanilla ice cream at our party. I can buy my favorite cookies at various bakeries around Portland. But a lovely simple cake and easy frosting-or not-feels special every time. That said, I love to watch other people bake cookies. Great video. You are so chill. I am so not.

I wonder if this is why this simple recipe failed for me- I didn’t chill the dough enough? Every other step, ingredient, and measurement done per instructions. This step is not made clearly enough by the video nor the written recipe on NYT Cooking app.
