What you said is absolutely correct...one should always start off with coil and not directly with pen. One really learns a lot.

Excellent review. I actually bought this machine. My first machines were from a tattoo kit and they were coil and they were terrible. A lot of my favorite artists run this machine and that's why I chose it. I knew that people recommended coils for beginners, but I liked the pen's style and every review that I've seen on it were just glowing reviews. I wanted a machine that was capable of doing everything and I really liked the idea of EASE. Taking all of the fiddling around with multiple machines and speeding up the process and simplifying it. This machine is excellent for beginners. This machine is the reason I actually stuck with tattooing and the fact that I love art and I love tattoo's. Those tattoo kits are bullshit and a waste of money. I'm actually saving money now to buy some nice FK irons coils. I just want to learn how to use the coils on some really great machines. Just to see what I like better and to have other options. That being said, you don't actually need more than one machine when you have the Hawk pen since this machine can really do everything. I do find myself sculpting lines with the pen more than single pass. I run for lining around 110 on the Cheyenne power supply and for shading it just depends on the area of the skin and how much I want to saturate. I usually go anywhere from 70-90. If I'm packing in color and going over a specific spot over and over I usually turn it down to 70 or 80 and then basic shading I use 70-90. It really just depends on what effect I want and what part of the body I'm tattooing. I do LOVE this machine and I love how you do not need disposable tubes with this machine either. They do make grips for this now, but I just use bags and cover the entire machine and then put some grip tape on the outside for a better grip.

Thanks dude. Yes I agree the pen definitely set the benchmark for rotaries. When people ask about which machines I use: Coils or Rotaries? I tell them I use both. Admittedly I do us my pen 90% of the time but I do love to run my Mickey Sharpz as well. It's kind of like someone asking which one of your kids you love best. I love them all equally. Thanks for watching bro, take care!

As a guy that is insanely attached to my Soba Mini Rusto and Big Sleeps liner built by Norm I must say this machine is an incredible single pass liner. Ive read that the Thunder is the lining God of the Cheyenne lineup but I can honestly say that at around 9.5-10V the pen lines incredibly pulling single pass lines. However if you have one of those full 4 appointment days I still use my Sleeps liner just for its speed alone. This video is very accurate and I must give credit to that. You can feel a bog and I had the same concerns mentioned here before buying. Its requires no maintenance and really does it all from soft B&G at 8-8.5v, color packing at 9-9.5 and lining just above or below 10v. Their really is something to be said about that! I only wish I had more options than the black/orange color when I purchased. would have gone silver. If you've been tattooing long enough to understand the way a machine hits and how your stretching hand relays how the machine can tell you exactly how its laying ink down you won't be disappointed with this machine. Tough one to beat. Cheyennes all arounder id say.

I've been tattooing for over 25 years and I wasn't overly impressed with the Cheyenne pens in part that they all have a non adjustable 3.5 mm stroke length which is half way between a perfect liner and a decent shader. You should use a machine with atleast a 4.0 mm stroke length for color packaging. Another problem was the RCA pulled apart because of the way you have to hold it. Now the replacement cords have a 45 degree angle where it plugs into the machine which does eliminate the problem. Most of my main tattoo suppliers completely stopped carrying Cheyenne machines and all the parts for them. I certainly agree that everyone should start with coil machines and I would never totally replace using coil machines with rotarys

I've been using Cheyenne machines since the original hawk. Cheyenne makes amazing machines they just do what they are supposed to do. I currently still use the thunder not very intrigued with a pen style machine but I have tried the pen and there is no difference performance wise between the thunder and pen I just find the thunder is way better for lining. Either way nice vid. Watch some of mine if you'd like.

Amazing review. For me, it's the best review about cheyenne pen :) I just ordered one after watching your amazing review mate, i couldn't get more satisfied than your review about that pen. i need to confirm, is their any give in the pen ? And what needle protrusion do you recommend for lining, shading and coloring ? As currently i'm using coil machine and i know it's totally different. thanks!
@JonoSmithTattoo
@JonoSmithTattoo 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that bro I appreciate it. There is a give system, just knock down the volts to round 8-9 and the machine gives automatically. To hit harder just crank them up to around 10-12v. For lining I personally let the needles hang out to their maximum throw and control my depth with my hand. It's just personal preference. For colour packing and shading I bring them back maybe 2mm from maximum throw. Again it's all down to your technique. Congrats on buying one, you won't be disappointed!

heard a lot of people say this rotary pen is less painful than coil. well i just got a half sleeve done last night with the pen. let me say coil or no coil. they all hurt as fuck! positive side. the dude is right it is quiet. i noticed the power is very consistent. and i noticed he did shading a lot faster than he normally would on a coil. now with that being said another negative i think since it covers really solid, maybe the artist have less room for mistake or coming off track from fatigue.

Good review mate (Y) I'd say the same thing about the cheyenne pen except linning with it, maybe it's because of the stroke is 3.5mm which is not good for me to line with. I use 4mm stroke for linning. In that case thunder is a killer liner. Have you used the new inkjecta flite nano ?

Yes I've seen these in the supplies. They're actually out of stock at the moment which is a promising sign. The voltage can run between 4.5 to a whopping 20v! That's a serious motor!

Hi jono, i have just been using my cheyenne hawk pen which is new but i found an issue with it. It will only run at a minimum of 9 volts. When i go lower the needle wont move up and down. Any tips? Does yours do this too?

Some power supplies require a lead called a jumpstart cable. These are made by Cheyenne and most suppliers sell them. A lot of power supplies nowadays have jumpstart ability built in them. The cables don’t cost much money. Just do a quick search on Cheyenne Hawk Pen Jumpstart cable and you shouldn’t have a problem finding one. Hope this helps.

been considering tryin this I own the stylus 1H and its so very similar. My questions are in regards to motor life. I love my stylus and use it daily like you say about the pen. The motor has begun to wear out tho over the last few years of heavy daily use. Im wondering how the cheyenne motor compares? I know stylus has the TYPE2 now with a stronger motor. Any long term users had to replace the motor in the pen? also do you hafta have the cheyenne power suppply?
@JonoSmithTattoo
@JonoSmithTattoo 8 жыл бұрын
Hi I'm not sure what the motor life is with the Pen but I'm guessing it's going to be pretty good as 1: it's German made & 2: Cheyenne consistently produce machines which are built to last heavy daily use. As for the power. The Pen can run on any power supply. Also it doesn't need the 'start-up' cable like the hawk & thunder do. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

It´s the same thing i was thinking on before buying it, will this pen do single pass lines? Because i had the same issue with all my rotaries (HM, Swashdrive compact, Halos, etc..) you can´t have a single pass line, sometimes they are inconsistent, and for example for lettering i continued using my coils. It´s hands down the best machine on the market, does everything well.

What black do u prefer im new to tattooing and i ran out of my dynamic ink.. I want to find better black. Im looking at moms black pearl outlining ink zuper black and kuro sumi outlining ink can these all be used for lining n shading also ? I been using starbrite tribal black not too imprrssed with it
@JonoSmithTattoo

I used to use KuroSumi but I found it seemed to leave tattoos with a blue haze around them when they healed. I switched to dynamic black and have been happy with it ever since. I've not used any of the others so it would be unfair to comment on them.

What kind of power cable comes with the pen? does it connect to any power supply right away? and is it A decent length cord?
@JonoSmithTattoo
@JonoSmithTattoo 8 жыл бұрын
Hi it comes with an RCA cable which fits a Cheyenne power supply but it also comes with an adapter so it can fit any standard power supply as well. It's a good length. I'd guess about 3 meters which is more than enough. Hope this helps.

What voltage works best on the pen for lining and black n grey/color packing? I am having to do 3 passes on mine when lining at 7 volts
@JonoSmithTattoo
@JonoSmithTattoo 6 жыл бұрын
You're probably having to do so many passes because you're running your machine to soft for lining. I run mine at 11.5v for lining and 9.5v for shade and colour packing. Thanks for watching.

Hi Jono, great review. I have one question about your Pen. Is your grip wobbly when a little bit unscrewed? I made a video of my Pen in my channel if you can have a look and give your opinion.
@JonoSmithTattoo

It wasn't for the first 6 months but it is a little bit now yes. Not sure if it's just the o-ring that needs replacing? Doesn't affect tattooing but it is slightly annoying.

Ok I've just seen your video. To be honest if that's new I'd take it back because that doesn't look right at all. When I say mine has a bit of play I mean a slight niggle. Nothing like the play yours has. I wouldn't worry so much about play when it's unscrewed quite a lot because you're never going to unscrew it that much when you're tattooing but it seems to have loads of play right up until it's screwed on fully. I should think with that much wobble it would affect the actual tattooing. I'd definitely take that back and get it swapped.

This machine lasted me just over 2 years running 5 days a week, sometimes 6 hours a day. I’m on my second one now. All rotary machines have a shelf life just because of the constant usage on the motor.

Jono Smith I really appreciate your help. I just took the leap and ordered one. I have a coil machine and a rotary works so I'm only going to use it for shading and coloring. I was looking at the xion but in the end this is so much simpler... should I worry about using it with my critical power supply?
