hahaha, lold at "fisher price my first tattoo machine". I've been tattooing a year and a half full time man, and since then you've been the best mentor iv'e had.. really appreciate your generosity when it comes to sharing your knowledge. One day we will cross paths at a convention or something, and i'll thank you in person man. Cheers lad

first machine was the hawk which was 2.5mm stroke, cheyenne spirit 3mm stroke, cheyenne thunder 4mm stroke and now the pen which is 3.5mm stroke making it the inbetween version of the spirit the 2nd machine and the thunder 3rd version. it has something similar to the thunder motor but to counter the strength of hit as most critique said it was too strong, the half mm stroke difference makes the machine less fierce but the extra half stroke higher than the spirit which got negative feedback for lining because of snagging. this is why they call it their all arounder and have the slogan be an artist because they figured out how to counter the negativity of their other machines and now have the pen as their flag ship product.

Nathan Hamilton better if you go to check the tech data of the cheyenne spirit, it is 2,5 mm stroke, that's because it's so good for B/G. Your other info is correct.

you can back your hand up on the Cheyenne thunder as well, just turn your grip upside down so the motor points up. Still a little awkward but you can get it like that. Cool thing about cartridges is how you can rotate them to suit your hand

Thunder (v1) and Hawk Pen (v1) are virtually same machines. Have same stroke of 3.5mm and operates on similar frequency - lowest 60 - 70 Hz and highest 165 - 170 Hz. The newest Thunder have more power and bigger stroke which is 4mm now than previous version - one shown in the video - new drive and the tweaked eccentric tappet. So, I bet that it may be some difference now between newest Hawk Pen and newest Thunder, but not so much between older versions. Also Spirit is not a predecessor of Thunder but a different machine. Usually used for black and grey and color shading only, with 2.5mm stroke. The most technologically advanced Cheyenne machine is now SolNova with brushless motor and very low frequency operation - from 25 Hz. Motor power: 2.5 W : 4 W : 3 W (Spirit/Thunder : Pen : SolNova)

Thank you for breaking it down, down to pulling lines, shading and scooting your hand back as if you were painting. Great technical advice as well. I did a proper apprenticeship in a family shop, loyal to the coil and exploring mediums as an artist who PERMANENTLY effects a clients experience and finished product, is just a nono. I have been waiting for a video like this, as opposed to a workshop at a convention half a world away. Aloha H

I would Imagine for work in the neck area that the hawk pen would work wonders. Not so harsh on the ears and more work space without the body of the machine blocked by the persons face just more free range.

Hey, the spirit is not version before thunder, thunder is for lining, color packing, and spirit is softer, for shading. Hawk pen is allrounder machine but it's not so strong as thunder for packing. The squeeking is not normal, you have 2y warranty, mine broke after half of year of efficient using, and repair is free is you don't use lubricants and oils! Otherways you pay for repair...

I've never lube the O-ring. It might squeak if I turned it too fast, new, but never while I'm adjusting depth. It doesn't make sense to me to lube something that's purpose is friction. To each their own. If it works for ya, it works for ya. Dig the vids!
@FiresideTattooNetwork

Thanks. I agree. The squeak is worse if you turn it fast.
@Phoenixrising5

I was going to say the same thing. That first o ring is for friction so that your needle depth doesn't move around on you. I have the pen and love it

advice to counter the whole grip rotating problem. Use a grip cover. i use a true grip cover and the pressure will hold it in place perfectly. Also the squeak sound, it says in the manual about using a lil lubrication like vaseline, but warn that it will make it easier to rotate which may be undesirable

the pen has a 4w motor and 3.5mm stroke . where the thunder is a 4mm stroke with a 2w motor . I've been debating whether to move to the pen from the thunder but unsure with how much they cost . I had a play with a pen at a convention and I also found the grip not clicking not to be as nice as the thunder . When it clicks you feel like it's in place .

I hated the hawk pen because I am so used to the balance of the 90 degree orientation of the motor to the tube that I sold it to another artist. It's probably because 10 years of running coils tuned me in to that feel. This orientation also lets me know where the front and back of the needle is. I'm so used to it, that I don't think about it and all of my movements are instinctive. I had to think about it too much with the pen..... good review, and the one I had squeaked too by the way...

I have been using the Helios rotary pen since March. No squeak on that machine and it is so much smaller than the Cheyenne pen. You need to try the Helios, it has the numbers on the dial so you know exactly what depth you have your needles at. Takes all cartridges but not comparable with the Cheyenne cartridges, for whatever reason. Try one out. I went from Neotats Vivaces ( which I still use and love) so the difference was like night and day.

As far as wrapping the pen is concerned there is a youtube video out for that, the first grommet under the grip is for holding the clipcord sleeve, and I guess cheyenne sells finger condoms with holes for the cartridge you can buy to slide over the grip and tape to the clipcord sleeve. The second grommet is what keeps the grip from moving out of adjustment while you tattoo, so while the squeak is annoying, I wouldn't want to lube that personally, not a fan of my needle depth changing while I tattoo. Personally I bag the whole machine and add a grip over the bag, as I prefer a larger grip, and cut a hole for the cartridge.

cheyenne pen is my main machine that am using and is pretty good especially at shading but the only problem i have with this machine is sometimes its rolling by its self and is changing the needle depth while am tattooing. that's very annoying and its making my job much difficult. maybe is only mine that has that prob i don't know. o and by the way my chayenne pen doesn't make that noise when is rolling.

+Fireside Tats I was going to ask this as well. I know that even in the area where I live the health board says that this is a acceptable standard in place of autoclaving it. Obviously Matacide or Cavicide is used on everything that can't be autoclaved. This would be a interesting topic for a video.

Get an Inkjecta Flite instead. The thunder has a set stroke and no give. The Flite has 4 stroke options and adjustable give from no give to softer than soft. Not saying the thunder isn't a great machine but it's not very versatile. Get a Flite with the Cheyenne adjustable grip and you'll be selling your coil machines in a month.

This was a very Helpful review. Ive seen some tattoo artist use the same grip of a cheyenne hawkpen on different clients. They are autoclavable but I don't autoclave them. I wrap them with a machine sleeve and cover that with coban. This still could leave the inside of the grip where the cartridge seats open to possible contamination so I disassemble and use matacide wipes for the inside. This seems to be the common practice from what I see of other artists using these machines. I think FK irons is making disposables but I don't know if they fit the cheyenne. Thanks for watching

+Fireside Tats thanks. hey do you think the thunder can do thick traditional lines? i line with coils im afraid of lining with a rotary.
@FiresideTattooNetwork

I think it would pull thick lines pretty well. I don't typically work with large single pass lines but I think it would do the job

Thanks a lot. I personally don't work in a very traditional approach but I feel like they would both work fine. I sometimes use loose round shaders running at a slightly higher voltage than normal and get very solid, bold lines. Thanks again for watching

IVEL & OLRA the pen is really great for traditional tattoos in my opinion because it is really easy and nice to make solid and fluid lines, doesnt matter if you want to use 1,3,5,7 or a 9 rl it is all working great. and for colour packing there is nothing that will pack in the colour so birght and fast like the hawk pen, on low voltage like 8,5-9,5 and causing really low skin trauma. i really love it for neo traditional and traditional, its good for every style i think, but since i switched to hawk pen from bci coil machines my lines are more constant, i can work much faster and my colorwork is unbelievable bright and looks fantastic, love the machine. but the proton equaliser (kawdron pen) should do the job same for less money, havent tested it yet but only heard good things and seed some really nice traditional and black grey tattoos done with the kwadron pen

Does it happen a lot? I would think that would be more of a cartridge issue than a machine issue but if it is happening with all cartridges, I would contact Cheyenne. Maybe the bar is bent and causing the cartridge to malfunction? I don't know
