El Sumidero is stunning and more easily visited than my first trip when the very small boats were privately owned. It was pristine then, but I have heard that it is suffering from plastic waste floating in from Guatemala where the headwaters are located.

It looks amazing but we couldn’t do it ourselves since it was closed during our trip. It’s between Palenque and San Cristobal. Other than that, just watch out for the speed bumps! They’re in the middle of the highway sometimes so you can’t go too fast out there.

Amazing trip and beautiful video! Planning to do the same route as yours. How was the road condition? Can any regular compact or full size car do it? Or have to rent a SUV?
@worldwildhearts
@worldwildhearts 2 жыл бұрын
When we were there, they were doing a lot of construction on the roads to improve them. Overall, road conditions were not great. Lots of speed bumps in the middle of the highways, so you need to go slow most of the time. If you have the option for a SUV, we would recommend it so that you don’t have to go so slow over the large speed bumps. We did it in a small rental car and had to almost come to a full stop at each speed bump so that our car didn’t bottom out. Even though the roads aren’t great, the sights are amazing! You will have an awesome trip 😊👍

Hi guys, great video. Very helpful. I had a question regarding the safety of renting a car and driving by yourself. Did you feel unsafe at all at your trip?
@worldwildhearts
@worldwildhearts 2 жыл бұрын
We never felt unsafe ourselves in our rental car. We heard rumours about roadblocks but never experienced any during our trip. The locals were all friendly that we talked to. We were with the two of us, which is maybe different than being alone on the road, but overall the trip felt safe the entire time for us. Just be careful not to go too fast over the speed bumps. Chiapas roads have them everywhere and they come out of nowhere sometimes. Any other questions, feel free to ask us 😊

Beautiful waterfalls! May I ask the time of year you visited? My family and I are planning on visiting in late May but we are sure if we will be able to see the blue water because of the rain ;/
@worldwildhearts
@worldwildhearts 2 жыл бұрын
We visited in May as well! Rainy season technically falls between June-January in the region, so May should be good overall. We had a couple rainy days and when it rained hard, a couple of the waterfalls did turn more brown (Agua Azul in the video for instance was brown after a rainy day). Nature is unpredictable, but the odds are still in your favor in May

Excellent video! Here's the thing.... my fiance and I are planning a trip to this area in the spring of 2022. But everywhere we read, we see all sorts of warnings about not traveling alone and not driving alone, etc. Originally we were planning on renting a car and doing a tour of the area, much like you did. But after reading blogs, reviews on Trip Advisor, etc., we got discouraged. We read stories of people getting stopped at barricades, being robbed, etc. So now we are leaning more toward just booking tours on Viator and doing it that route. But your videos make it look so easy! What's your take on traveling around Chiapas on your own?
@worldwildhearts
@worldwildhearts 2 жыл бұрын
You guys will have a great time in Chiapas!! We had no issues ourselves with getting robbed or anything. All the locals we ran into were very nice and welcoming. We did get stopped once at a barricade but they were nice and all they wanted was for us to buy something from their small shop. So we bought a couple waters and all was good. Only be careful for the speed bumps out there. Rent a taller car if you can so you have decent clearance over them. Booking tours will get you to the places you want to go, however the distances are long and you may spend the majority of the day driving to them rather than enjoying the spot. With your own rental car, you can go at your own pace and relax

The rental car was the biggest expense! We paid about 600$ for 12 days and rented it from the airport. We stayed an extra 5 days in San Cristobal without a car because there you really don’t need it. Hotels were pretty cheap. We paid around 15-20$ a night for decent places. The guides we got at the entrance of the ruins! There are many guides that will talk to you 😄

@@pomona26 Awesome! It's going to be tight but it's definitely possible! you need only 1 day in El Chiflon, 1-2 days in Lagunas de Montebello, 2 days in Las Nubes (just because of the drive there it's quite long), 2 days in the Lacandon (to visit the ruins and learn about the culture), 1-2 days in Palenque (could do Roberto Barrios on the way to Palenque), 2-3 days in San Cristobal (Misol-Ha and Agua Azul are also on the way there), and Sumidero Canyon is near the airport in Tuxtla so you could do that the day you arrive or drop off the car!

where did you find car rental and how much does it cost? in our experience the added insurance make it quite expensive in Mexico? thanks
@worldwildhearts
@worldwildhearts 2 жыл бұрын
We rented ours through Expedia and ended up getting a Europcar at Tuxtla airport through that. Insurance is expensive but the basic one is necessary there due to the speed bumps and road conditions. But definitely recommend getting the insurance once you get there since we initially got ours when booking through Expedia and it wasn’t valid in Chiapas regions. So we had to get the local one anyways
@annetteruckertmysticnomads7814

@@worldwildhearts thanks for responding / do you remember how much the extra insurance cost you? If I purchase third party protection and collision damage waiver over “ holiday cars” europcar I pay about 270.- per week … without any insurance about 80.- per week … seems like I might be better off purchasing without any insurance and buying insurance there if the insurance I buy online is then not valid in the Chiapas ?
@worldwildhearts
@worldwildhearts 2 жыл бұрын
Definitely buy it there. We didn’t and ended up buying the extra one there anyway so was an unnecessary expense to buy it through the third party online. I think we got medium coverage there and that was a couple of 100s (not sure exactly how much but between 200-400) for the 12 days we were renting the car

We rented a car from the tuxtla airport! It’s easiest driving yourself. There are day tours from San Cristobal as well that can get you to some of the sites but not the far south like Montebello or Las Nubes! We would usually get a guide at the ruins, but that was it!

Sorry for my dumb question, but did you stay at a different Airbnb in all of the locations? Or how did you end up doing this trip?

We stayed in guesthouses and hotels in nearby towns! :) there's many places along the route. You can find some on booking.com, but some are not online so you just show up!

Pretty sure you can take your dog into nature but not recommended because of the extreme humidity and high temperatures! There’s also monkeys etc in the wild

If you lived in Mexico indefinitely but worked full-time online, how would you break apart this trip to see it all? I can take a few days off, but not many.
@worldwildhearts
@worldwildhearts Жыл бұрын
Where in Mexico do you work? If you could make San Cristobal your base for a while, it's easy to go on trips from there. Especially the waterfalls are doable on a weekend (definitely go to El Chiflon one weekend and you can combine it with the Sumidero Canyon). Another weekend you could go to Palenque (do the ruins, Misol-Ha, Agua Azul, Roberto Barrios waterfalls). The Lacandon Jungle and Las Nubes waterfalls might be a bit harder as it's pretty far out there! WiFi was pretty spotty in the more remote places but we had no problems in San Cristobal and Palenque!

How safe is Chiapas?
@worldwildhearts
@worldwildhearts Жыл бұрын
We felt very safe but it’s definitely very different from the rest of Mexico. It feels very indigenous and especially the jungle town in the south. We only had one issue where they closed the road because they wanted us to spend Money on their town (we bought water so all good)… but overall they were friendly

@@spartan4272003 we had a Mexican SIM card while there. Reception was spotty at times since you’re in a jungle for at least half the trip. But in the cities the reception was good. For any issues where there is not reception, we definitely recommend asking locals for assistance. They were all very friendly and helpful. And bring google translate on your phone with Spanish downloaded in case you’re speaking to locals and don’t speak fluent Spanish yourself.

This region is very dangerous Look for Chiapas violence on the media 17 April 2024 Palenque village road block Planks with spikes youths with machetes Iron bars Clubs pieces of steel on chains to smash car Windows All wearing masks I am 60 my wife is 70 Imagine seeing your wife of 70 on the ground surrounded by armed masked youths They twisted her wrists so hard caused serious damage giving terrible pain. She is unwell physically and emotionally They even tore up photos of our children and grandchildren These where local people not cartel They even built a village next to the road to they extort money from passing cars Car wrecked. Physically abused held hostage for six hours robbed These are violent people willing to use extreme violence. Using a political cause to hide what they are thugs and thieves Animals have more respect
