Welcome to a thrilling unboxing and review of the 2023 AliExpress Chibson EVH style Frankenstein Guitar Replica! This isn't your average Chibson - it's a stunning tribute to one of the most legendary guitars in rock history, Eddie Van Halen's Frankenstrat. We're diving deep to see just how closely the Chinese craftsmen have managed to loosely mimic the relic job on Eddie's original masterpiece . This is an unbranded unaffiliated guitar, from
a seller with a valid business license on Aliexpress.
From the custom red, black, and white stripes to the meticulous corrosion on the bridge and the carefully aged wear & tear, this guitar looks every bit the part. But can it stand up to the $35,000 original? At a mere $303, the value proposition is undeniable, and the craftsmanship might just surprise you. In fact, it just may have the big brand scared!
This Chibson boasts jumbo frets, a reliced neck and headstock, eye hooks for strap buttons, and even a tone knob on the volume pot - a true ode to Eddie's genius.
I'm excited to share my journey of upgrading this beauty in future videos.

Eddie Van Halen's Frankenstrat is a guitar legend, a DIY masterpiece built from sub-quality parts that became a monster of rock. In upcoming video we'll explore the history of this iconic instrument and how Eddie crafted it into a symbol of innovation and rebellion. Later major companies decide to build the first Copies of the original parts caster now calling it their own.
Update: This Guitar Video has made the EVH brand so scared that it made them call me on Sunday 9/10/2023 @ 2:25 pm eastern time to insist that I take it down. WELL THAT'S NOT HAPPENING ! This is stated for transparency purposes!

I watched a video here from Gibson USA where they were making out that doing relicing is a 'dark art' and they were expert at it. Yet we see China pump out great relicing without the upmarket fanfare and sell it for a rock bottom price.

The ol' algorithm brought me here and I'm glad it did. Amazing how this guitar can come so close to copying Eddie's original for $303 dollars but yet the big boys will still charge a few grand for a slightly more accurate version relic wise. You have a good niche here looking at the more inexpensive guitars and you gained yourself a sub. Good stuff buddy.

As I feared. I ordered one the day of your video. As prob a lot of people did. The rush meant a huge drop in quality to the people behind you as they tried to get them out the door. The one I received had almost a jet-black neck. No strap. No shield in cavities and the amount of nitro gass-off choked me out. The biggest problem is there was no setup because the neck doesn't fit the body. They tried to fill order with odds and ends. The neck clearly didn't fit, so they shaved it, with the sides around the joint not having finished as they rough sanded it until it "fit". The action is great, for slide guitar. Sits around .130. I am sure Fender loves this but I was afraid that your review causes runs, that the Chinese manufacturers can't handle.

Been looking at one of these for awhile now, and while I own an Epiphone Slash model which is incredible BTW made in China, I started thinking about this VS. a real Fender backed, Eddie endorsed Frankie, or any EVH guitar not endorsed by Eddie. Then I did the math, and while yeah these are super cheap knock-offs, I asked myself, If Chip handed Eddie that guitar, would it meet his demanding standards as he was trying to get Ed's knowledge and years knowing what works and what doesn't to the hands of us mere mortals. But now that I've thought it over, I'm going to just wait and get a real deal EVH striped or 78' Eruption. Why? Because all the savings in the world and the time spent making it better will never equate to one that the master created for us, and shared with us how he did it. The diff in price was about $800. To me that is worth saving for. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the Vids and reviews. And I don't really care if people buy them. My point being, I'd rather wait and get a EVH backed real deal current model(s) that was endorsed by Eddie before he passed. Only Fender has all those notes which get passed onto the entire current line. It might be a fun project toy, but that's simply not a Pro level guitar endorsed by EVH or Fender with a guarantee. It's a paint job, nothing more. There's no heritage and original endorsement. I'm not comparing to the original 25k collectible Frankie. That's just stupid. I'm comparing to the current crop of striped and tribute series. My Epi Slash is made in China and endorsed by Slash, it's done through the proper channels. I paid $499 out the door at GC. That included a case! Yes there are great, items made in C, but without the backing it's solid zero for me. Peace.

Okay so I bought one based on your video thinking it was going to be so great and while I think they did a great job on the relicing of the body and I like the sound of the pick up, the neck is absolute junk. The wood is so green it's got a Twist in it and strings buzzing, and there's no way to intonate it. It's a very very sharp past the 12 th frets. I tried a truss rod adjustment and tried moving the Saddles back as far as they would go but didn't do any good. Took it to a good luthier who pretty much said there's not anything that can be done unless you want to experiment and spend a lot of money. Asked if I could swap out the neck for a new neck and the luthier said it would be very difficult to find one that would fit properly and it would still most likely have internation problems I believe based on the neck pocket. Anyway I've written the seller to see if they will give me a full refund or what they propose to remedy the situation. Guess I'll have to continue to wait to own a Frankenstein unfortunately.

@@tylerparker3024 I did pick up a strat neck with the thoughts of doing just that. Apparently the neck pocket is not a standard size and I've looked at some other videos of people replacing the neck, including this same guy in a later video, and it seems most have regretted doing it because it didn't help or fit properly. I may still give it a try tho!
@tylerparker3024

I would think some methodical sanding to the neck or the pocket (whichever makes sense) would do the trick. Unless the neck is smaller than the pocket in which case you could definitely add some filler to the pocket and then sand to fit, then hand paint the filler red around the edges to match and blend with the body color.

Needs a pick up spacer under the bridge pick up, but could literally go straight from box to bandstand no problem as is. Aloha, I’m a huge EVH fan. I have salivated over this guitar since I was a kid. IMHO it’s the most iconic guitar ever created. It represents my youth and reminds me of the great songs, memories of seeing him live and the innovations EVH contributed to music. As a kid, I anticipated and envisioned having this guitar in my collection “when I got older”. FF through life and I’m now 58. The Franky remained elusive. I have never been a fan of Chibson for there lack of QC and copy infringement. As the price of the EVH model continues to rise, along with the scarcity of the guitar, my opinion has changed. This may be the only opportunity for an average Joe to get one. In some way’s I believe that Eddie would have done the same thing. I will be ordering one this week. If you or your subscriber’s have any advice before I order this let me know. Mahalo, for your great video!

Okay big update. I came home today and it’s here. Just last night it said it hadn’t shipped. Anyway it’s here. Took it out of the box and performed a thorough inspection. Before I begin my assesment I just want to be upfront and explain that I’ve built around 8 or 9 part-casters and have been playing guitar for over 30 years. With the exception of my 2019 Les Paul standard I’ve performed my own modification to all my guitars to fit my needs. However I’m not some super picky guitar snob or I obviously would’ve not bought this. I received exactly what I expected. So with that being said I didn’t have the same experience as our fine gentleman who made this video. I’ll start by saying the guitar I received is unplayable for my needs without a modest to a heavy amount of modifications. First thing I noticed was the action was ridiculously high. 5.2mm at the 12th and 6.1mm at the 21st. You could walk a giraffe under this. To correct this I lowered the bridge studs down until it was close to my liking around 1.6mm at the 12th. Fret buzz was bad on the high E. Pulled out the fret rocker and here’s when I noticed my 13th fret on the high E was shaved down way too much. I need to replace the fret. The frets were also high on the low E side at the 16, 17 and 19th. Sharp fret ends on the high E side on 1st down to forth. Another easy fix but worth mentioning. I’ll likely just do them all the frets over with medium 6150’s. The guitar was completely out of tune as expected and the intonation was way off. Something I should’ve realized in the video is the locking nut is screwed in from the top. That’s no good. Over time they loosen and slide back and forth causing tuning instability. I will be drilling out the back and installing the correct machine screws. The neck was straight and shape is a somewhat of a chunky C and I found it to be comfortable. Tuning machines are just whatever. Those don’t matter much to me with a locking headstock. Currently this guitar will not stay in tune for numerous reasons. I don’t really care at the moment, it’s getting gutted. This Floyd Rose II is not for me. The trem arm is a screw in that sits way too high and has a ton of play. The base plate appears to be chrome plated cheap cast metal with steel saddles that flop around when bar is depressed. This will also cause tuning problems if the don’t return to the tuned position. This doesn’t happen with German made Floyds or Gotoh 1996T which I consider the finest available for their price point. The pick up sits way too low in the cavity and will requiring shimming. I won’t even review the pick up under these conditions. Volume pot worked fine. My relic job wasn’t as good as the one on the video. The tremolo and pick ups look brand new and so does all the other hardware. I have a lightly aged neck, kind of rusty selector switch and a 1941 quarter that seen better days. No grime on the body. Just a freshly painted EVH Frankenstein that has been nicely sanded in the right areas. I choose no reflectors because that wasn’t available at the time of purchase. Maybe that’s the difference in the amount of relic they apply? So to some this all up. With the exception of the frets I’m actually happy with my purchase. I knew I was buying this with the intention on upgrading it to suit my needs. This is no different from any other parts-caster I’ve built. Except this has a killer Frankenstein paint job. And it’s cheaper than most, if not all of the body and neck combos I’ve purchased in the past. Final verdict for one’s consideration. I have no reason to doubt the guitar in this video is as good as he says. Look at most of the others reviews. They all seem to be happy with their purchase. I believe the guitar I received was rushed out the door due to an overwhelming amount of orders. Which I’m fine with because I have the ability to correct these issues and actually enjoy repairing and modifying guitars. If you don’t have that skill set, tools and patience required you might be taking a gamble. I would suggest waiting for the rush to cool off so they can refine their quality control.

@danrao3707 Thank you very much for that update. 🙏 This is exactly what I like to see. Everyone sharing exactly what they received. I so far have seen very many variations in the guitars from viewers. Some better than others. It does appear that the rush and demand on them created a uniform qc problem. Most people so far have been like you, thinking that it is an excellent upgrade platform. Thanks again for your honesty and for keeping us updated!

@@danrao3707thank you so much for taking time to review the guitar you received. I will really take the advice of waiting their quality to come back, but its basically what I expected. My biggest fear in those guitars are the bridges cause cheap floyds are really trouble. And since in my country they are very expensive I would likely have to pay like at least half or more the guitars price which wouldnt payoff for me. All the rest seems acceptable for the price we're paying, but hopefully Ill get something better as soon as they are not so busy. After that I would really love some updates about the pickups and the future performance of the floyd. Thanks a lot in advance and have fun with your new toy.

I built a frankly from a cheap $130 Strat type kit. I upgraded the hardware and put an EVH Frankenstein pickup and EVH pot. Be aware that pickup has short legs unlike a Gibson humbucker and a Strat knob will not fit the shaft of the EVH pot. So it takes a bit of work, but it came out great and I love the guitar.

I got mine a couple days ago from the same vendor and it is not as distressed as yours. I guess after your video they must have gotten a lot of orders and have had to cut some corners. The body still has the feel of being painted in layers so that's good. The neck is nice and straight, but it is clean without any distressing at all, it looks and feels like a brand new neck in raw unsealed wood. And none of the hardware is rusty or dirty. Also came with a super white and new volume knob. Oh and the action is so high I'll probably have to take the neck off and shim it. I already ordered a better pick guard and a 500k pot. But I gotta say for $300 its not too bad. It probably would have cost that much for the parts and I would have had to spend a lot a time painting it. So not a bad deal. Great video thanks.

Thanks brother. I also shimmed my neck a bit. I took off some of my neck relicing because it was too dark. I have heard that the relic jobs are all different. I have also just upgraded the trem with a new nickel FR. The old one did work good. But the relic on the fine tuners made it not smooth to turn them. Thanks for watching , and thank you for the update 🙂

I made my own Frankenstrat out of an Ibanez RG550. I used Seymour Duncan Custom Shop ‘78s and a DiMarzio Fast Track II. I cut the scratchplate the same way and put an aged tone knob on the volume pot. 1971 quarter, double sided tape and reflectors on an accurate paint job and relic. I sanded the black off the Edge I tremolo and the arm. It looks great. I always wanted that paint job when I was a kid and now I have one on a guitar that I actually enjoy playing.

The original Strat copy that Eddie bought from Lynn Ellsworth in 1975 was an ash body and two piece maple neck. This was when Lynn was making them for Boogie Bodies. These were a division of Grover Jackson. At the time Lynn Ellsworth was making the Jackson guitars and Wayne Charvel and Grover was selling them. Eddie just went to Lynn to buy a guitar body and saw that they made necks there too. It was when Eddie saw a stack of bodies that he asked: "Hey! What's wrong with these?" Lynn replied: "Those are seconds. They all have some sort of defect." So Eddie bought a body for $50.00 and the neck for $80.00. Which was they were when I bought my first guitar in parts. Eddie cobbled it together from a Charvel neck and Charvel body. It was a Charvel for all intents and purposes. The Bumblebee Strat was made from a Charvel too. So YES - the brass block was on there when he repainted it red. That guitar had a slew of replacement necks. The guitar was originally black. Eddie played it with a rosewood fretboard neck for a while before replacing it with a maple neck then he painted it with the white after masking it for the stripes. The he painted it red because all the Japanese guitar companies were copying him. This happened in 1979. So Eddie had that guitar for five years before being repainted as it is today. The quarter was to act as a stop for the Floyd Rose tremolo as it sat high as Eddie used thicker necks to compensate for the height of the Floyd saddles and tremolo plate. That guitar went through HELL and back while Eddie was in the height of his career which is why it has so many scars and cigarette burns. Eddie was always experimenting with guitar parts. That Charvel Strat was his test bed for years. He did the same modifications on his other red and black and white striped Strats. The EVH Strat in your video looks like it from afar but upon closer examination you can see that the black stripes are not correctly placed and Eddie only had two springs in the tremolo block. There's also some masking tape that he put in the tremolo cavity to keep the ground wire from becoming entangled in the springs. Eddie originally had a Fender tremolo on his guitar before using the Floyd Rose. And there are five holes in the pickguard which never had any other knobs in it which is also why there's aluminum shielding in the holes. Other than that and the dirtiness of the neck finish this looks just like Eddie's for the most part. Good score on finding a Chinese seller that makes a decent quality guitar for a whole lot less money.

Damn man you got lucky with shipping and seller communication, I recently bought a green Jackson Kelly off of aliexpress for a guitar build I was going to put a ton of money and work into to make it even better or up to par with an American made Kelly and the smoothest guitar I’d own. The seller kept delaying the time for shipping and dragged it out to over 3 months. He kept telling me he could cancel the order and essentially steal my money I paid him for the guitar, i kept telling him no and stopped going by what he was saying after about the 7th time he extended it again and pulled a random number out of his rectum. Finally, the guitar got here, and it wasn’t even the same color, wood, or even electronics at all. It had several blemishes, scrapes, and an uneven finish on the back and top but thankfully its hardly noticeable, and all of the strings on the Floyd rose system were tuned up 5 half steps to their original pitch. The bridge was also all the way up and forward because of the horrendous amount of tension between the strings and it was just terrible. Also the neck is slightest twisted at the top and all of the frets were uneven and some were even shorter than the width of the fretboard. The floyd system would also go out of tune after every single slight nudge or tap to it. This was several months ago and a lot earlier this year. Since then, I’ve gotten the frets crowned and redone along with the neck filed down and as straight as it can possibly be, no more dead notes besides a single one that I can absolutely live with because it’ll ring out if you get it just right. Plays perfectly and smooth now. For the Floyd I installed a Floyd rose special gold and black tremolo system, and I also installed a hot rails pick up in the bridge and man it sings. Next I’ll be replacing the pots and the neck chumbucker with a black winter Seymour Duncan pick up, and then then the nut also has to Be replaced because the hole for the Alan screw stripped and busted, again cheap ass locking ch-nut. Now it’s one of my Favorite guitars and I can’t stop playing it nor do I ever want to, a little awkward to hold and still has horrendous neck dive, but I absolutely love it.

I'd take that over a "replica" made by gibson or fender or evh because eddie didn't play a gibson, fender, or evh guitar in his heyday. He played a guitar he made from scraps and just crap that he threw together over time and that's how this guitar was made. It wasn't made by some big guitar co it was made by some random chinese factory with random chinese crap eddie would've used back in his early days anyway so its more authentic to me.
