The Bears and Packers were both in the hunt for a wild card spot. Both were 6-7, one game behind Minnesota and Detroit. Bart Starr's job was in jeopardy. Joe McConnell and Brad Palmer called the game on WBBM Chicago.

Brad Palmer, thanks for posting. I not only enjoyed your work announcing the Bears on WBBM, but I also have good memories of your being a studio host for the Blackhawks back in the mid-70's on WFLD.

Many thanks. I'm left with a lot of fond memories, as well. The 70's and 80's were a great time to be covering sports, and especially in Chicago.

Nice work. Love the no sugarcoating assessment of Bear tackling & exasperated, "Why did I leave Dallas?" look on face of professionally dressed Iron Mike Signs of the torch being passed to better players. 3rd year CB Leslie Frazier reading Bart Starr's brilliant call of RB pass up 14; rookie Mike Richardson throwing the final block on McKinnon return (punters are dangerous too, you know); finally, another rookie Dave Duerson's TD-saving hustle after Terry Schmidt got burned by Lofton again.

With the ubiquitous television coverage on all sorts of devices, one forgets how exciting a football radio call used to be. Yes, these WBBM announcers were biased, but the descriptions and excitement in their voices really brings the game alive.

Nice work Brad. This is interesting to see how Ditka was still working on the basics with some of these Bears players that would go on to win the Super Bowl. Dropsies, missed open field tackles, etc. In my opinion, if it hadn't been for the 1982 strike shortened season, Ditka's 1983 Bears could of won the division and moved on to get the all important playoff experience. What a missed opportunity to fine tune a team when he couldn't coach 9 cancelled games in his 1st year.

Watching this, I realize just how unwatchable the NFL is today. Got 4 hours to take in a 60 minute game? Perhaps the best part is how the announcers don't assume the average viewer is football illiterate, and there's no need for on-screen graphics to tell who has the ball and in which direction they are going. Great video. Thank you!

The Wall Street Journal did a piece based on a survey by WBBM, Channel 2, Chicago which showed that up to 74% of their viewers were watching the game with the TV sound turned down and listening to Joe and me on WBBM Radio. Our station ran ads and promos encouraging Bears fans to do just that, but CBS, which owns both stations, told our GM to knock it off. But CBS was impressed with our setting an NFL record for revenue. So much so that it allowed our sister stations in San Francisco and New York to broadcast the 49ers and the Jets or Giants. It was a big exception to our all-news formats, but then the games generated a lot more money than Sunday newscasts. Morning drive on weekdays is the big money grabber. Appreciated both of your recent comments.

Hello Brad. Do you think the Bears would've made some noise had they gotten into the playoffs in '83?
@bradpalmer79443 жыл бұрын
Not really. They did win 5 of their last 6 games, which set the table for 1984 and 1985. The Bears came within a game of the Super Bowl in '84, getting trounced at SF in the NFC title game. That SF team was voted the second best team in NFL history in the 100th anniversary poll of coaches and GM's, second only to the 1985 Bears.
@SECRETARIATguy2243 жыл бұрын
@@bradpalmer7944 Thank you, sir. Here's another one for you: If McMahon doesn't get that lacerated kidney and stays healthy the rest of the 84 season, do you think the Bears could've beaten SF?
@bradpalmer79443 жыл бұрын
@@SECRETARIATguy224 I think they could have won, but doubt they would have. They certainly wouldn't have gotten shut out. But let's face it. SF had the same kind of year the Bears had in 1985, both going 15-1 in the regular season. The Bears defense did a good job against Montana, but didn't get any help from a Fuller led offense. Plus, the Bears never had much success at Candlestick. Had McMahon been healthy for the playoffs following the 1986 season, I think they would have won another Super Bowl.
@SECRETARIATguy2243 жыл бұрын
@@bradpalmer7944 Yes, and the thing is the Bears with McMahon seemed to match up well with the Giants. Even had the championship been at NYG, I don't think the Bears would've had too much trouble against the Giants if they have McMahon.

@@bradpalmer7944 Brad, I wanted to tell you that I'm from Chicago, and was a kid in '77 and distinctly remember my Dad turning the tv volume down and the BBM radio up that season, specifically for the game against the Chiefs. Now that I'm a full-grown adult (and stuck in another state), I want to pay you and Joe my highest compliments for the work you guys did calling the Bears games on radio. What I liked most was that you were both enthusiastic, you were both rooting for the Bears, but when the Bears made silly mistakes or decisions, neither of you hesitated to tell it like it was.
