POV: The most nerve-wracking delivery in downtown Chicago
Yesterday, I had an unforgettable and heart-pounding experience while delivering a load in downtown Chicago. Let me tell you, finding the location amidst the maze-like streets was a challenge in itself. But little did I know that the real thrill was yet to come.
As I arrived at the right location, I realized the docks were cunningly hidden under a bridge or tucked away beneath a tunnel. Maneuvering my semi-truck through the narrow streets felt like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Chicago streets definitely weren't designed with trucks in mind. I had to make wide turns, which seemed impossible at times.
Feeling trapped and out of options, I made the decision to call the authorities for assistance. I dialed 911, hoping they could help assess the situation and guide me out of this tight spot. Traffic came to a halt as we strategized for about 15 minutes to safely reverse the truck. The tension was palpable, and my nerves were on edge.
Eventually, we located the elusive dock, but the challenges weren't over yet. Every corner was tight, and I required an escort to navigate under the bridge. It was a humbling realization that no matter how skilled or experienced you are as a trucker, there are times when you genuinely need a helping hand to reach your destination.
Yesterday was a whirlwind of emotions. I was sweating, my nerves were frayed, but above all, my priority was delivering the load safely and soundly. No accidents, no unfortunate encounters with the bridge.
Have you ever faced a nerve-wracking situation while on the job? Share your experiences below! 📦💪

GPS sent you to the front of the building, you didn’t see any loading docks there. You tried to circle back around the block but the road was not for buses or trucks. So you stopped before getting stuck underneath the bridge. You called 911 to help you back up. You did the best you could have and I give you mad respect. You were under pressure but still kept your cool. And you took directions from non-drivers very well. You showed me what it takes to be a decent driver. Thank you my guy and best of luck in the future. I appreciate you and the video!! Excellent job 🫡

This is one of the best comments I've read here. Thank you, sir, for addressing that and appreciating my work. I'm not a perfect driver, but I think I did the right thing more than doing it myself, and it could lead to something bad. I always think about the worst thing that could happen if I don't ask for help. That's why I still have my CDL for 8 years now. Trucking isn't about competition. You must accept your mistakes and do better about it. Nothing is perfect on the road, no matter how you plan your trip…😊🙏

My father was a truck driver for 45 years. Guys, BELIEVE ME when I say that driving a truck in a city is IMMENSELY difficult. Please be patient with these guys. It’s a TON of stress and you constantly have to remember low viaducts and streets that you can’t drive on because you’ll get stuck. If you see them having trouble making a right turn, it’s also helpful to back up if you can (if you’re in the left turn lane that they need to use to make the turn). Truck drivers are right up there with military, in my eyes. Without you guys, no one gets any goods. And you sacrifice so much of your personal lives to do this job. Btw, you did great and made the correct call.

You did everything you could to minimise the "damage" in the situation and that's great. The lady telling you where the actual dock is was nice. And then the person with the scooter and the Volvo coming out of the street right at 25:20 really struck me. Gotta love it when people make an effort for you to get where you need to and thus create less traffic problems along the way. But the manager that came jogging out and started directing you and the traffic took the cake; he needed that delivery and he needed it to go smoothly and he did what it takes. Great video man.

I mean it’s hard for a 26ft box truck I couldn’t imagine trying to get a semi down there. Big props for getting it done. All that work for a pallet or two. Not worth all that stress and mess. You’re correct bro. It’s is so hard for a big semi like mine to come to downtown Chicago. All the streets are too tight for turns, and the place is too confusing to find. Don't be so nervous. I know it seems like a big deal but it's not. You need to be more aggressive with your city driving but safe at the same time. What I mean is, don't be so afraid to use multiple lanes when turning, Cars will always get out of your way. Keep driving slowly, and take your time.

I truly salute all the Truck drivers that have to make their deliveries downtown. Whenever I see them, I immediately get out of y'all's way lol Chicago is hard enough to navigate lmao from the weird random dead-ends, to the distracted unexperienced drivers, to the random narrow roads that seemingly expand out of nowhere, down to the occasional signal losses moving in between the buildings lol you have enough on your plate I don't wanna add to that scratch. and DONT even get me started on the whole Wacker Dr. conundrum thats a novel of its OWN keep on truckin man

One last tip bro, as a Chicago native all 24 years of my life. When it comes to Chicago traffic and streets don’t be afraid to get over or use your weight to your advantage lmao. The average Chicagoan especially downtown is a complete asshole on the road being nice and timid will lead to folks bullying you out the way don’t be afraid to swang that big mf over and use your horn aggressively 😂😂 trust being shy on Chicago roads and you’ll be sitting on the shoulder waiting forever lmao remember you got a good 30-40 tons to work with they only have about 1-2 trust me you get over or blip that airhorn they’ll move or wait 💪🏽 🤜🏻🤛🏽

This is why Merchandise Mart used to be served by the railroad. And in all honesty it still should be. That entire area during rush hour is literally gridlock traffic, as a truck driver you would have to wait until all that traffic subsides, which could take hours. With a train, that wouldn't be the case. There is still technically a track to that area, but it hasn't been used in over 20 years east of the river.

I avoid Chicago at all cost, driving for myself I have that ability. When I did deliveries to Chicago working for a company, I always made sure I'll fit height wise or width wise. When I was unsure, I threw my 4 ways on, got out and looked. F*ck them people that honk at you, they're not the ones driving the truck and they are not responsible if anything happens to my equipment. They want stuff in store, they have to be delivered by the truck. You handled it very good by calling 911 but for the future, when you see signs "no trucks", don't go down that route. Stop, 4 ways on, get out and look around, if can get ahold of anyone, ask how to get to where you're going. It'll save you a lot of headache in the future! ;)

You need to be over to the left when making the right turn to get it. Not sure how Americans are with this but in the UK most people understand when they see a lorry over to the right making a left turn that they hold back.

My younger brother was driving a semi and enclosed car hauler delivering exotic cars to customers all over. Probably one of the most stressful over the road trucking gigs because of the extremely expensive stuff you are hauling plus the delivery destinations are always different and many times can be in city centers like Miami, Chicago, etc. You never know that a customer is living in a skyscraper on the 55th floor and you need to deliver it in downtown on a time constraint and unload on a main street for the customer. Insanity. He quit a year ago or so. He had to cheat his books from his boss because you can have 6 different customers wanting their car yesterday and you need to deliver the other 5 all across the country like yesterday. Every single person who knows the trucking business was absolutely shocked how a early 20s young man got that gig. Never would i want to do that job. EVER.

I also had to do William Sonoma on rush street 900 North Michigan But you pull it on rush and you drive down a tunnel and if you have anything bigger than a 40 foot trailer you'll never make it down the tunnel....
