This was me last night hearing this song for the first time driving home last night. Awakening last morning, parts of the song were in my mind. I couldn't remember its name nor the band who played it a long time ago, when I was young. It took me some research to find it - don't blame me for the corners I've been digging in - but when I found it... it was just the music for my situation and the most important words for living together with my wife. "After all of we've been through..." Now, being "oldies", familiar with disease, grief and defeat, terrified by everyday bad news, this song brings us back our confidence. My story on this song: In the Summer of 1982, a "B" movie called Summer Lovers (about a menage a trois in Greece) was being massively advertised on TV. This song, "Hard to Say I"m Sorry," was being played during the trailer. I really had never heard of Chicago before, but when the lines were being sung in this song, I would just burst into tears as a 15 year old kid. Why? Well, I'd been in love with someone for a few years, and I messed any chance for a real relationship with her so badly, and then I would still see her all the time in junior high school, but the rift never got healed. The painful and soul-piercing lines sung by Cetera just went through me like a hot knife through butter. Oh, how I wanted to say I was sorry for being so messed up that I couldn't make right and do right for the person who was catalyst of my spiritual awakening. All these years have gone by, and while I've done my best to make amends where I can in life, especially when a mistake happens, that regret about her is still there for me. Our hearts really want to reconcile and come to terms and make amends. That isn't always possible, and even if we learn from our mistakes that wreaked havoc on us, that pain is still there. I think this song was the gateway for me becoming a writer, too, because it created such a catharsis in me, that it led eventually to me writing about my pain to deal with it better. I wrote because I wanted/needed to, not because I was forced to by teachers' assignments.
