Thank you so much for awarding me with this gift! And for keeping after me to redeem it. I'm so happy with how much you liked this stuff. It was SO fun to join you two for your first listen to it. This album side is a bit of an outlier in their catalog. As Rand has said here they never got this proggy in anything else. They do have quite a lot of hints of this in some of their other music, though. I think the closest works are on Chicago V, so I highly recommend checking that out next. The rest of VII is really great, too. For me V and VII are my favorites, and CTA and II are extremely fantastic as well. Somehow III just doesn't grab me as much as 1, 2, 5, and 7. Their 4th is live versions and 6, 8, 9, and beyond is all just really different stuff. It's too much NOT like the best band's music, which is YES! Woohoo! Thanks, again, Nick and Lex, for being so lovely and entertaining!

Transit Authority is very fusion ... but as I think of it all the first seven LP's were prog as they covered so much territory especially on the double lp's aside the pieces which got airplay. Seven though is my favorite due they matured. Yet it was also the album which the band members fought the most, They nearly did not get back together to record VIII and let their producer pick the all the tracks on.

Chicago VII is a double album. Prelude to Aire, Aire and Devils Sweet are on face A of the first album. I did not think you were ever going to listen to this and I'm very happy for it. This was my teen years, ( I know, I was born at the best of times music wise). That first side is Chicago at their jazziest. Saw them live and they often included jazzy instrumentals that were not on vinyls.

Robert Lamm: "Everybody is writing now, so there are four more people working towards composing and that made for more material. The basic project, the basic objective of this band was for total expression and support for each other's creativity, so that made it almost absolutely necessary to do a double album. Also, we wanted to stretch out more; I think we were encouraged by the success of "Just You and Me" and the jazzy solo in the middle. You know, we thought that we maybe had been neglecting our jazz instincts a little bit, so we pursued that on Chicago VII."

Not only one of my favorite Chicago albums, but one of my favorite albums by anyone! Of course, starting with "side 3" it gets more poppy, and actually produced a few hits. But what a start; you don't hear a vocal until halfway into side two....

This is when Chicago was daring. Then they got trapped into making poppy singles. I was hoping they'd get back into doing this kind of stuff in the 1990s with their Stone of Sisyphus project, but those songs were all singles, no musical movements and not too experimental. By that point, they had no balls. And then the greatest hits compilations came out and they were just kicking back and not creating anything new. They could've done so much more in the 1990s.

Not many, if any bands can match the musical ability of the original Chicago lineup. Peter Cetera, Terry Kath, Robert Lamm, Lee Loughnane, James Pankow, Walter Parazaider and Danny Seraphine were a formidable group. These comments were spot on. I remember buying this album when it was released and listening over and over in my dorm room to catch all the nuance and to try to understand what I was hearing. For me the first of the two discs (from which these selections were taken) was the jazzy part of the album and the second disc had all the pop songs intended for radio play. Cetera lobbied for the pop side of things to keep them viable and the rest of the band was responding to critics of their jazz chops when they created the first disc (Chicago always had trouble with critics, which in retrospect makes the critics seem so small.) Now 50 years later this album makes so much sense. I have to give the group credit for putting out something so non-commercial amongst a run of platinum albums in the pop rock genre that introduced so much good music to ears that needed to hear good music. I only wish the group (which only has three of the seven original members remaining) was still creating such masterpieces today.

I love this album! Thank you for requesting this Doug. It’s their peak combination of songwriting, studio mastery and Terry homing in on the sounds of his beloved Fender Tele he customized with a humbumcker pickup and lots of stickers, and experimented with effects pedals. VII was partly a reaction to their increased discomfort with their pop successes through VI, when the audience was increasingly there for the hits, so the first two sides were jazzier and more experimental, though VII also had 3 more hits. But there’s not a dud on this album. Italian From New York, the first song in side 2, is also an instrumental and has my favorite under-the-radar Terry solo. If you like the flute solo in Aire, you might like It Better End Soon off their second album. It’s a funky, driving 4-part song suite with an extended flute solo in Part 2. The entire suite is about 11 minutes.

It was great to listen to the first side of lucky number VII with both of you 😊 it’s been a while since I’ve done so. I think those of us who were around in the 70’s were very much spoilt by this kind of quality musicianship and Chicago were able to present it without it being too far out and still appeal to a wide audience, it’s certainly lasted the test of time, 50 years later it still sounds interesting and fresh. And VII may be their most stylistically diverse album, from Latin, jazz/rock, Bossa, swing, pop into rock ballads and funk…thanks again NicknLex, love your work!🎶😎

Everyone (or many people) know of Chicago from their classic rock cuts. But I sometimes wonder if Chicago wrote those pop hits so they would have the income to do all this progressive almost free-jazz stuff. I doubt if many people at the time knew what to call this but I listened to lots of progressive jazz and free jazz by guys like Miles Davis and that's what this is. If you think Chicago's output is deep, start listening to mid to late 60's Miles Davis. This is what I meant when I said the 60's and 70's produced more great music than you can shake a stick at!

If you’re going to explore more of the Kath era keep in mind that VI is the exact opposite of what you just heard. Of the first 11, VI is my least favorite because it’s pure pop, It doesn’t have the Rock they usually write. The last song Feelin’ Stronger Every Day is as close as they get to Rocking out and you have to sit through a slow ballad to get to it. III,V,VII and the first 2 are my recommendations.

The first 11 have Terry Kath. Aire is in 7/4. The album that temporarily ended the number titles was the first after Terry passed it’s their 12th and called Hot Streets. Then they went back to numbering with 13. Don’t forget about Live in Carnegie Hall in between 3 and 5 and Live In Japan which came out after 5 and just smokes. Carnegie Hall is 4 lps and even more songs on the cd. Japan is a single album. They numbered most of their albums into the 30’s.

This is the only Chicago album I ever owned, and that was due to side one. Unfortunately the other three sides are peppered with pop songs I didn't care for and if I couldn't put on a side of an LP and just play it through I wouldn't keep an album long. By the late 70s I must have given the album to someone. Side one though...yes very good!

Don't get too excited to listen to all of the Chicago catalog. After the death of Terry Kath in 1978 their sound was quite a bit different. You may like them up to Chicago VIII, but you will likely be disappointed in their change after 1978.

Chicago:XXXII:Stone Of Sysyphus (2008) is the exception as it was originally meant for a 1991 release but the record company rejected it and it took another 17 years to get it to us. I think they tried to find the original sound on some tracks.

What is Progressive Rock ? Have been hearing the term since 1970 or earlier but never knew what it actually meant......other than the band had at least one musician in it, as opposed to a bunch of kids with not much real talent. These 3 tunes are pure jazz 100% ..... there is no ROCK in there at all. No rock drumming at all. No rock or blues guitar at all. At least 3 types of jazz used , maybe more if there is more, and nothing else.

I am sorry but you are wrong. This is Jazz Fusion not Jazz. It's also Progressive Rock. This is coming from me an actual jazz musician and guitar player. I have played in jazz bands , jazz fusion bands. Rock bands. Progressive Rock bands. I have a degree in music and composition/theory. You should check up on how music has evolved. I started with Django Reinhardt and George Benson, later Getz, Desmond, Miles & Coltrane. That's just the beginning. If you still don't know the difference between jazz & Chicago after 50 years. With all do respect you might want to study some musical history.

@@NicknLex This music was around and more common before I was born , so that is over 70 years ago. It was jazz back then and still is. It existed before the term jazz fusion was ever credited by some over educated idiot trying to big note themself. Not having a go at you , you were not born back then and only know what you have been taught and read. Those old enough have seen what has happened to education and the manipulation of facts and history to benefit the bankers and their control of the west , our governments and history.

@@NicknLex Progressive Rock ..... a term created by Yes fans because Wakeman played a lot of classical licks , lines , fills etc in their music. Deep Purple added a lot of classical music and jazz to their blues based rock as well, but it wasn’t called Progressive or Progressive Rock. It was called heavy or hard rock at first and then Heavy Metal. Now metal heads claim it is not Heavy Metal...... WHY ? Because even if they have a PhD, they are still uneducated.
