its sad because I feel like the knife was for protection against maybe a random crazy man on the streets but not to stab a girl because her friend's losing a fight . I feel pepper spray is the only appropriate item of protection for a 13year old girl.

+Angel Estelle Doubt it. She gave that kid a knife to either, scare the other kids away who were bothering her or to do damage. A thirteen year old girl would have a hard time trying to kill a grown man with a switch blade.

+Salene Brom A taser can lead to death too. I watched a doc on it. It's electricity that can go through someone's heart. I guess the chances of someone dying from it are less than a knife.

Up late second here... and seeing a sad story. The 13 year old should NOT have pulled out the knife at a fight. Im sure her mom gave her the knife for protection, not to specifically kill someone like the some of the news post made it seem. so terrible, youth dying over ridiculous things. God bless them. our youth and the family suffering

very well said Kim I agree. A very sad situation. I wish the girl thought to not get involve and to get help instead. But sad thing is the damage is already done and no turning back. A young girl murdered per stupidity. Not only that HIERARCHIES are racist. Can't believe they charged the mother with murder when I hear stories of white people going on a rampage killing numerous people WITH THEIR PARENTS WEAPON and the parents DO NOT get charged. There was a case don't remember if it was the columbine here in Colorado or another one, but the kid parent were hunters and taught their children how to handle a weapon to kill, even have him his own weapon. This weapon that his parent gave him is what he used to murder numerous kids at his school AND THEY DID NOT CHARGE HIS PARENT WITH MURDER THAT OUTRAGE ME
@natrulyvivacious
@natrulyvivacious 8 жыл бұрын
Also a lot of young girls are at risk of getting rape and is a dangerous world out there so many parents would give them mace to protect themself. I cannot stand the media making it look actually LIEING that the mother told her to use the knife to kill that girl. I'm pretty sure the mother have her the nice to protect herself in case she gets into a dangerous situation. I'm sure her mother is not a psychic. she didn't know her daughter was going to be involving herself in a fighting situation. So they are ABSOLUTELY WRONG AND RACIST ALL THE WAY AROUND! !!

ummm...there was a dispute BEFORE this over some facebook beef...and they said the mother told her to take the blade and use it if needed, which she should NOT have done...why give a child a weapon DURING a fight? if she gave it to her before then...then I can understand

My mom gave me a knife to protect myself and ive gotten in fights and stabbing the person never crossed my mind. i think parents should tell their child that it is only for life and death situations not petty little fights. but growing up in ghetto areas can make every fight feel that way because you know everyone else has a knife too. i dont think you should give a child a weapon but i do understand why youd give one

+Breem Dawn I totally agree with you. I was taken aback by their comments as well. Who in their right mind would get mad at someome for deciding to live in a safer area if they could afford it? Especially if they're raising children. I'm very familiar with both places. As I lived in Hyde Park many, many moons ago. Back in the day I had classmates/ friends who lived in Parkway Gardens who rode the school bus to attend my middle school through a selective program. I moved out of state in the 90's. So obviously Parkway has changed for the worse. Anyhow, to everyone, good luck and stay safe wherever you reside.

Ti, you always bring intelligence and grace to every topic. I love your channel. When I was 14 (many years ago!) I was at a party and a girl who was known as a tough fighter with a switchblade tried to start a fight with me, just making a lot of offensive comments and saying she was going to beat my ass. She had had a few drinks. I told her that I didn't like fighting, I liked to make friends. I asked her if she would be my friend. All of a sudden the whole situation changed. I thought she was going to cry. For the rest of that night and for the rest of the school year she told everyone that I was her friend and nobody had better try to hurt me. I think she was just touched that someone was nice to her.

So Dylann Roof's dad doesn't get charged with murder but Tamika Gayden is? I understand how she is irresponsible but I don't think she should be charged with murder. She didn't directly kill her. Plus, I've seen parents giving their children much younger than 7 guns for Christmas yet they're not being prosecuted.

bigboytexasdownsouth Gayden gave her daughter a knife to protect herself. Roof's dad gave him a gun to protect himself. See where I'm going from here? I'm not backing either of them up. I think it's silly to be giving your kids a weapon; a 13 year old at that too. Of course Gayden was charged with murder due to the binding precedent of the previous case that Ti was talking about. And of course Roof's family are from a different State and so the laws differ. However, I'm just confused of how they came to the conclusion that the weapon provider is also a murderer. It makes no sense to me.

If you give your kid a gun and they go to school and shoot someone you're responsible because they can only use the gun when accompanied by an adult; it's up to the adult to make sure the kid doesn't reach the gun when they aren't suppose to.

I carried things for protection while I was at school and I never used them on children it was to be used if someone was trying to kill, kidnap or rape me.

I would also like to say that my daughter knew Dekayla..my daughter is 13yrs old..Dekayla went to her grammer school..my daughter has been very sad this past week n wants to move out of Chicago...ironically the housing project the 13yr old n her mother resided in has been raunchy for decades..there used to be a skating rink next door n every Friday we would go..we would get out of skating n literally would have to run n find shelter because they would be having shoot outs in the streets...those who havent had the experience living in poverty stricken areas/neighborhoods then consider yourself BLESSED..Because these areas are CREATED for these exact results...DONT BE FOOLED....The government knows exactly what its intentions were...when we cant see a future ahead of you...when you have a child n society tells you you're because you have that child or you must live your life as a janitor the rest of your life..when fathers arent positive advocates in the childrens' lives...when theres liquor stores on every corner...you see your mother..grandmother..father..etc working two jobs just to make it yet never have time to be parents...minimum wage jobs...add up those factors plus more n this is what you get.....

see, this is why I love that my mom makes sure to tell us to always think before we act. and never to be too quick to let something g get to us. for example, if someone is trying to antagonize you in the street verbally ,or is just being A-hole in attempt to get you out of your comfort zone. don't give them what they want because that person may be emotionally unstable, not care about their life, to the point that they wouldn't flinch pulling out a weapon on you because they're not right in the head. always good to have patience because it can save you from alot of things. what happened to these teens is tragic. a life lost over something petty and another who pretty much tainted their future permanently. the system has very little compassion for us blacks as it is. smh, ugh so glad my sister is going to a charter school next semester. I always look to the mother. I blame her for not instilling coherence in her child and veering her away from violence. people may think I'm being stuck up with my P.O.V. but I was born and raised in Brooklyn so I'm not foreign to this type of news. however that didn't stop my mother from making sure we stayed out of trouble and didn't take on that violent mindset. so no excuse for this mother.

First of all, switchblades are illegal in Illinois. That is possession of an illegal weapon, concealment, furnishing said weapon to a minor. Gave it to "protect" herself, a good D.A. will charge her with intent and possibly conspiring with a minor. Let's say the first two are misdemeanors and the last 3 are felonies, as her actions resulted in death of an individual. That is 25 years to life. And that is if she has not prior arrest. It does not matter what we think "should" happen, that is the law. If she had taught her daughter to lock the door and stay in the house, as opposed to the operation of a switchblade, we would be discussing something else today.

I am so conflicted on this story. I live in the suburbs of Chicago. I don't really know how to feel. Parents are feeling like they need to give their children weapons to protect themselves just so they can walk to the store or feel safe in their neighborhood because the violence is sooooo out of control. I am a mother of 3 and couldn't imagine giving my child a knife to "defend" themselves. However, was the intent for her to protect herself if she really needed to or was the intent to kill that 15 year old. With so much violence & death looming over the city of Chicago what do you do? You have to decide do you want your child to be the murderer or a victim in Chicago? I just don't know...I can't pass judgment on another mother.

That girl should not be dead. I try so hard to talk with my young people. I tell them in a minute if you can get away, get away from trouble, run if you have to. You ain't got nothing to prove when someone has a weapon. The equilibrium is off. You don't run upon a gun or a knife. You will lose. what you do, is try to get away. No shame in running when there's a gun involved. Live to see another day and laugh about it later.

Your dad gave you a knife when you were in college, a little older and wiser. More likely to understand when it is appropriate to pull out or not, in this case a 13 yro's brain isn't developed enough to logically reason like an adult. Also your friend losing a fight that doesn't involve you is not reason to pull out a knife to stab someone. Separate them, break it up, call her parents definitely but stab. You when stab someone, they will be seriously hurt and you will be in serious trouble. That's precisely what happened. The real problem is people teaching kids to handle their own problems. Instead kids she discuss troubles with peers to parents, and all parents should meet to resolve it. Hormonal teenagers don't usually have the skills to do that. This is beyond sad, and occurs toooo often to just blame the kids.
@cierraaaaaaaas
@cierraaaaaaaas 8 жыл бұрын
BiContinental Life&Style I hear what you are saying I was older but you can't go unprotected in really bad neighborhoods. It's not logical especially as a female. In an ideal world we would all talk things out and raise our kids better but that probably won't ever happen. In the real world you get jumped for nothing but walking down the street like what happened to my brother before we got out of a bad situation. Now about staying out of the fight......that's hard because a common thing taught is that you are supposed to defend your friends and family. It comes down the the fact that no one taught these kids what to do except fight. At the end of the day they failed their kids and want to blame each other. I find it ridiculous that the families started to act up in the courtroom. What does that say about their values?? I've never been in a fight because I don't run my mouth, stay out of business that's not mine, don't want to be beat and hang around the right people. It's easy to teach other kids the same thing.
@BiContinentalLifeStyle
@BiContinentalLifeStyle 8 жыл бұрын
I understand what you are saying and agree with some of it. But your dad did 22 things this mother did not, teach you how to mind your business and stay away from drama and equip you with a weapon later in life when you can reason better and he is not around to protect you. I went to a bad school and saw fighting and my family did not endorse that. Other families did though, it was and still is wild to give a 13 year old a weapon to deal with another child, especially when you are the parent and are home during the conflict. The families were fighting because the court testimony indicated that the mother was home before the incident and knew there was conflict and told her daughter to take the knife. She could have told her to stay in the house, while she go out and mediate. People rely on the streets, life lessons or others to rear their kids. That is wrong, children need direction and input from responsible adults. People are upset with the mother because, why bring 5 children into the world when you cant afford to raise them in a safe environment. Why not get involved enough to where she is not constantly in dangerous situations unattended. Have friends or relatives pick her up walk her home, there no guarantee she'll be safe but it betters her chances to end up like you, in college instead of in jail. and on the news as an embarrassment. I agree it is easy to teach but A LOT of parents are not doing it And that puts so many others at risk..

Sure, people use social media for fighting but that's only the bad which is a really small bunch that gets tons of attention. It's like Donald Trump. He gets a lot of attention, says all these bad things and people piss on most politicians. Or bad cops, you don't hear a cop saving a women's life or stuff like that because they only report the bad stuff. You are right +lovelyti2002 parents now unlike the parents of previous generations, have way more factors to face in keeping their children safe. I'm a say this and I'm not throwing any shade on anybody, but it's just my opinion that with kids now having kids nowadays, there are no real women having kids it's teenagers as young as 14 and 13 now having kids grandma now is like 24 maybe even 20 now because the cycle of kids having kids is broken in families today so now the Grandma that I knew back in my day who was like 50 or 60 doesn't exist in this generation.

+Renee Atkins I get the fear, but human beings are social beings. You can't stop friendships because you're scared of trouble. What you actually do is teach your children to choose their friends wisely. There are tons of teens who carry on healthy social lives because they've chosen friends who don't have time for mess.

u are absolutely right. your not suppose to fear no one but god. but in my opinion im tired of especially females fighting and dying over nothing, it just isnt worth it. i would rather for my daughter to be with her boyfriend than a female friend any day.

+Kimberly Ferrell My problem with this is, the daughter told her mother that there is a fight going on, and she wants to go over, and mom gave her the knife because of that. But WHAT made her give that child a damn knife, instead of simply telling her to stay in the house? That would have been the real protection, in my opinion.
@Kelaine72
@Kelaine72 8 жыл бұрын
SoramimiKeiki I'm tending to agree with you. I was giving them the benefit of doubt. But if you thought your daughter was in so much danger you will get to the bottom of it, you don't give her a knife and send her on her way. If my kid was being threatened I want to see faces and know names mothers and kids.

Yes, this mother should be charged. A 13 year old child should never have been given a deadly weapon because they DO NOT know when to use it and when not to.

These situations are always sad because one stupid action affects so many lives, including the other children this single mother has. my heart goes out to the family that lost their daughter. Instead of giving your child a weapon, teach them how to resolve situations without violence.

if my 13year old was getting bullied by a 15year old. I probably would had given her something to protect her self too... if it wasn't a knife, she could've picked up a stick or rock ..

I live on the south side of Chicago and this is utterly disgusting. Idk what makes ppl go so insane that they think the only way to handle a situation is to kill. I'm a parent myself and wouldn't dare to encourage such behavior. I stay away from that area all together and if I see kids doing anything they shouldn't I step in to a certain point and try to redirect them in a positive manner. This is heart breaking and I pray for all families involved.

I'm from Chicago and it sucks how we have gone downhill. Someone is killed either everyday or every other day. I hate that these kids have now adopted the same mentality. That area has been rough for a long time. It's just sickening to see that the majority of the news from here is mostly negative.

I'm just trying to understand how this will go down in court, cause as a defense I would question how can you prove that the mother gave the daughter the knife for that specific fight or just in general for protection? Yes, she is only 13 but giving your child a weapon...while living in Chicago is not too far fetched. However, They could argue that a 13 year old is not old enough/ capable to know when and when not to use a weapon (although some are) so the mom giving her a weapon n the first place is a crime n itself. It could go both ways...just playing both sides of the fence here. Very sad situation for everybody in this case but more so for the family with a daughter no longer here smh. RIP.

This story is so disturbing. See this is why, when I was in high school, I mainly kept to my self. All that running in cliques and house party shit...yeah avoided it. I wasn't about to get involved in shit. Fast forward 10yrs later, I'm basically the same. I just don't get involved in bullshit. I have a few friends here and there (people I actually consider friends) and that's it.
