I remember reading something about this in a staff magazine when I used to work at Sainsburys. The magazine was issued to all branches in the uk. I had only been working at Sainsburys for a month when I heard about this and there was a lot of Health and Safety and fire safety inductions on my first day. The store I worked at also was built on a tip like Chichester that had methane present. A special membrane was incorporated into the construction of the building to reduce and manage the risks of Methane. The problem with building on former tips is not only the risk to the store itself but the risk of gas migration underground to nearby buildings if it’s prevented from entering the building it’s been built over.

I took someone for a driving lesson that afternoon on the Graylingwell golf course (which is all a housing estate now). Facing Sainsbury's way we could see the massive tower of black smoke and thought the petrol station had gone up. The westbound A27 was closed from the Tangmere roundabout because of poor visibility due to the smoke and all the traffic heading west was diverted through Tangmere and then onto the A259 to eventually rejoin the A27. It took me just over an hour to get from Chi to Bognor that evening.

Never did pay for my shopping that day, I just push my loaded trolley out...

Are school had an airplane trip over there that day.. So we probably were the last to see it from the sky before it went up in fire ..was told fire men! Were shootings beer cans out of the building.. Ps my mum did her shopping that day as well and get it free as paid by check..
