Thanks Ollie! I went on a two other major trips after Utah, 2 weeks later and I toured the Grand Canyon, and 2 weeks after that toured Southwest Colorado. It’s been an amazing time and very happy with how the Honda is performing.

Man...chicken corner was on our schedule awhile back but we couldn't make it in time. Definitely hitting this trail next time if possible. It's so beautiful.

I highly recommend this trail, along with onion creek. To be honest, these 2 trails made Shafer/Potash seem kinda lame 🤣. But…. Shafer is waaaaaaaaay more popular.

I loved our drive to Chicken corners! We went in April, which was my first trip to Moab. I drive a Bronco Sport Badlands,this was its off road breakin. Although its technically an AWD, it has the ability to manually lock the rear differential and and lock front and back 50/50 front to rear via clutch packs. The system works great. I barley spun a wheel my whole time in Moab!

Yeah, those Bronco Sport Badlands are impressive. It's suppose to be a similar system to the midsized Hondas, but Ford's using the modern GKN components. The new 2023 Pilot Trailsport has upgraded modern hardware, but unsure how it all comes together.

Fantastic video. I took the Raptor and did the Shafer trail, but I was alone so I didn't want to get into anything terribly technical. I'm definitely hitting Chicken Corners next time

There’s also a offshoot trail that leads to wind caves. Should be a bit more technical too, which will be fun for you and your friends.

Good video and trail description. I was just there in mid July and Yes it was hot. I thought it was an easy trail myself but there were some tricky places for beginners. Being my 1st time there I got out and looked over a couple humps and the sand uphill nearly got me too, was still in 2wd.

It would be a fun one for sure. Driving back out during golden was amazing! I didn’t properly capture it on video though, so I didn’t show it in this video. I’d imagine it’s what the Victoria falls in Africa would look like, just without the water falls.

Let me know if you need any gps tracks. When you go to chicken corners, there’s a trail that’s suppose to lead to wind caves. It’s suppose to be a bit technical though. It’s a rated a level 4 with the community consensus saying the trail is “harder”.

Great video! Photos always look so tame compared to seeing it thru the windshield! Was there in early June just in time for an early heat wave up to 105, yikes, but can't wait to go back. Your warning about shelf roads is spot on, some very easy trails would not be a good idea for someone with height/falling type issues. Need to get a Honda or Subaru and start saving some gas $$

Thanks Richard! Hey, we went 2 week of June. Once we got to Moab, a heat wave had just started dissipating. I was actually kinda cold some of the nights. Two weeks later and I was going to take the Wife here, but temps were in the mid 100s.

This trail holds lot of memories for me. I was about where you are @3:11 when I had to stop and turn around because my mechanic accidentally put power steering fluid in my brakes and my brakes were nearly locked up solid. I drove back to town and they were red hot when I got there. After a complete system flush and new master cylinder I came back up the next day and we saw a ranger in one of those inside ditches, fully nose down. bad luck I remember getting to around @10:50 when we talked to a couple in a Tundra who decided this trail was too hard for them and turned around. I didn't even think much of the trail at this point and felt it was more like a fire road, but the cruiser does that for these kinds of roads. We didn't go as far as chicken corners, we had lunch at the lockhart turnoff where we had to complete clean out the fridge because of spliied marinade (double bag liquids folks). We did lockhart basin, a 2nd gen Tacoma TRD off-road on 31's, A 2nd gen Frontier with the same, me in the 80 series and a bone stock tj 2.5 manual with 28 inch tires (short wheelbase for the win). Locks of rock stacking, and it was also his first time off-roading. Baptism by fire, or rather rain. It DUMPED on us later that day and into the night. I was sure we were going to be stuck but we got out. Helluve trip. @24:31 - Squeeze guac. It will change your life for trips like this. Stays green forever and is so easy for quick lunches.

Thanks for sharing Patrick! This single comment gave me the validation I needed to justify calling this a “Moderate 4WD / Difficult AWD” trail. Well, it rather gave me validation for trusting TrailsOffroad.com ratings 😃. Now in the next video will be Gemini bridges, which is rated the same as Hurrah pass (level 2 easy). I don’t feel like it’s a beginner trail at all. It’s steep and would scare alot of people 😱. The two trails aren’t the same difficulty IMO.

@@JonDZ_Adventuring I remember taking my cruiser up that trail right after I bought it. It had completely dead stock springs and I had 6 big dudes and their bikes. We had just done the mag 7 ride and this was the optional shuttle back up (the regular shuttle is back up the highway) and I thought it would be easier than going around. It was a LONG ROUGH ride (riding the bump stops), but we made it. I feel bad for the person in the 3rd row smashed against bikes. It must have gotten a little worse since I've last driven it. There are a few other really fun AWD trails in the area I could recommend next time you're down there, or just give me a shout. I can use an excuse to make a trip. Its only 3 hours drive for me.

Went up there in early November. Right before the shelf road to the corner, ran into a herd of cattle being taken that way for where I have no idea, but had to wait about half an hour for them to go by at that big turnout at the overlook.

Yeah, I was so impressed with his driving. When he was airing up, I was parked about 1 foot away from his rear bumper. It was a slight incline, but I had full confidence that he would roll back into me.

excellent trail footage. far too many offroad tubers resort to clown show acts to get views and 80% of their videos are selfie shots of themselves bragging about their expensive gear. I prefer videos like this, that show the trail that I plan to take someday.

Yet another trail to add to the list! Ya know Jon, I think I just need to move out west haha. Your friend in the CRV impressed me though, dealing with all that in a manual. Last time I went wheeling with someone I knew was in a manual, he had such a hard time getting up any hill. Also, that for the gram part? Man, I got anxiety just watching the video from my friggin couch! Haha

Haha! Yeah, it’s fun out here in the west. Each western state has its own thing going. Just don’t move to California 😖. So, when I started wheeling in my WRX I was always stalling out. It was only geared 12.8:1, but with no torque converter, it requires a bit of heel / toe. Good on Sean for getting though. He’s a stud. Yeah, that cliff. When I came across that part where I could easily slip on, I decided to turn around 🤣. I’m crazy, but not that crazy. Slippers don’t have much lateral support.

@@JonDZ_Adventuring I've heard plenty of warnings about going to CA, no worries there! Besides, I once went to a San Francisco Beach as a child, and still have nightmares.. haha Yea, I wanna say my friend had a 3rd gen forester with the manual, he made it up the hills, but it usually took him 3-4 tries unless he was flying down the trail to get momentum. So yea, definitely some good driving on Sean's part! Yea, I don't understand how you'd go anywhere near that in flip flops! We got a trail here that can be difficult for an AWD if you come from one direction from what i understand, but it leads to small walking trail to an overlook called Buzzards Roost which is just a large rock jutting out from the cliffside. Gonna have such a hard time even getting close to the overlook haha. Nothing separating you from the ground except a 10 foot or so thick rock, and 1000 feet of air haha.

Nicely captured. On "the" chicken corner I agree that going in it wasn't bad at all, but coming back out was a lot more anxiety-inducing (for me). Not being able to tell how close I am to the rocks and looking out the window only to see nothingness below on the driver side was way worse. Also, totally agree about Sean's performance. I can't remember which trail, but there was one section of the trip he was behind me and I was consistently surprised that he never fell behind on any obstacle. All the AWD drivers were honestly very skilled. I have to drive a 4WD because I don't have skill 😆

Gotcha! You know, the Hondas hood slopes downwards so I have pretty good visibility. As far as Sean, he must really know how to drive, because the maneuvers he was pulling off require the heel toe technique. I’ve never been able to learn in all the years of driving stick shift. It just requires too much coordination.

At 6:09 is the turn that I didn't make real well in my F250 and my right rear tire was hanging slightly over the edge. Talk about puckering up haha. How was the crossing at Kane Creek leading up to the trail? Last year when I went there were some storms and ended up being quite wide and over 2 feet deep. Seen some other vids of people getting stuck in the mud right there.

Hi Jon - great portrayal of that trail. Ironically, while riding the Chicken Corners trail on motorcycles back in 2018, we passed a Ridgeline with a punctured oil pan at Hurrah Pass. At the time I scoffed at the idea of a Ridgeline as an overland vehicle. Now I realize the owner just hadn't put on any protection or added clearance - and wasn't careful in his line choice. Did you guys consider taking White Rim Road on this expedition? Why or why not?

Good question. We did this in one day, and then drove up another trail to go camp for the night. Because this these trails are out and back, I would allow for 8 hours total. There's a dirt road called Kane creek that is 6.5 miles, then it leads to Hurrah Pass, which is 3 miles and then chicken corners which is 11 miles. So, roughly about 20 miles total has to be driven on dirt on way. it's 40 miles on dirt total.

Do you have all of your sway bar links disconnected, or just the rear ones? And also the ABS lock/4 wheel lock that you have, can you put it on the older pilots and Ridgelines models. Like the first and second gen Ridgelines and pilots

I only have my rear sway bar disconnected. I tried disconnecting the front and I was getting a weird binding. The guy who made the BALL system also figured out how to give the front suspension longer travel by using the long Eibach springs and elongating the struts. Yes, you can add BALLS (brake aid line lock system) to older pilots and Ridgelines.

Jon, how often are you guys cleaning out your air boxes and filters? All that caravanning with the dust, your air intakes can't be happy

I change my filter with every oil change, which has been every month as of late. Yes, I’m putting in that many miles. I measure the height of my air intake. It’s at 44 inches tall. I’m definitely changing my engine / cabin air filter much less frequently than my Subaru. In my Subaru, every time I did a trail, dust would blow through the vents, even if I set the A/C to recirculating. I don’t have anything coming through in the Honda.

@@JonDZ_Adventuring I'm always alone and am now in the habit of checking my AB regularly as I've discovered dust, dirt, leaves, twigs, etc.... I put some window screen across the front of it for the bigger stuff but, yeah, the filter is something I replace pretty often as well.... I'm wanting to figure out a snorkel for my Astro but I'm going to have to make something work as there's nothing "bolt-on" available - Hoping we can meet up of the pavement some time soon... Just put 32" tires on and am re-gearing to 4.10's with the rear posi Monday

Honda puts the ZF9 in all Passports, 21+ pilots and 20+ Ridgelines. Honestly, I haven’t heard of anyone with a failed automatic transmission from any overlander (any vehicle) I’ve ever met, and I’ve met well over a thousand people during my travels. The only type of transmission that has a high rate of failure is the CVT. Honda, Subaru, Nissan, it doesn’t matter who makes it, there are the transmissions that fail. I’ve met Atleast 50 adventures with failed CVTs.

You don’t have to drive back over Hurrah Pass. You can drive all the way to Needles in Canyon Land, but never with the vehicle in your group

So I have a stock 05 landcruiser with larger tires. I’ve been driving a jeep off road for 25 years. Yet I’m about to take the Land Cruiser to Moab. Could I make it?

I’ve been seeing a lot of people getting stuck out there because of all the water. In this video, we went June 2022 of last year, so please be careful. If conditions were dry, you would definitely make it.

Stock front suspension, 1inch HRG lift spacer in the rear, 215/75R15 Toyo AT3(1.6 inches taller than stock). This build is very cheap.

This trail is rated a level 3 moderate for 4WD. I would recommend 10 inches or more for AWD, but with careful driving, you might be able to get by with 8.3". Conditions can vary depending trail erosion.

The GX (Land Cruiser Prado) is more accurately described as a full time 4WD system with mechanical center differential lock and a low gear transfer case.

There’s plenty of 1/2 ton trucks that will do this trail. I don’t think a 3/4 ton will have an issue. This trail is rated to be moderately difficult for 4WD vehicles, but nothing too bad. The biggest issue will be coming across a vehicle going to the opposite way on the tight switchbacks. Someone may need to back up.
