I built the TOTE boxes that you showed on another video. I noticed that the boxes are more stable and are easier to clean if you flip them upside down. Then, you can just snap off the bottem to clean. Thanks for your videos, Becky. YOU are my pioneer hero and I look foreward to your videos!

Luv your nest box totes! When I use 2x4s with chickens I always position the board on its wide side. Up here in N. IL my chickens roost on the flat side of the board and settle down and cover their feet. Keeps their feet nice and warm in winter :) but also its less stress as well! Really enjoy your videos Becky!

That's a great idea about putting a backboard behind the roost so they feel secure. I'd also add some extra steps so they don't have to hop up so high- this will be important as they age.

You can also paint the inside of the coop with a limewash. We have never had problems in our coops and we freshen it with homemade limewash. It makes the coop look great and keeps the bugs at bay! ~Ranger Hill Honey Farm

Here in Tipperary,Ireland,we kept Rhode Island Reds. The younger hens were called pullets and ,of course,all were given names! By the way,another way to encourage egg production is to just warn them,unless they up production, they will end up in the oven!!

My hens STOPPED laying about 2 months ago. Before it really got cold. I didn't know what to do. I watched how Becky fed her hens and tried it. Still nothing for about 2 weeks. Then. LOL Now I am getting 6-8 eggs a day from my 14 different type hens. Thanks Becky!

Our chickens just would not lay so we talked to the lady that sold us the chickens and she told us to sprinkle some cayenne pepper on their food. It worked perfect and it is now winter and they are still laying. Just wanted to tell you this interesting tidbit.

If it were me, I'd (first) install the 2x4 flat side up so the chooks can sleep on their feet, keeping them warmer at night. I'd also replace the branch with a 2x4 for the same reason. I would also (second) install a second feeder instead of increasing the work to be done each week. And (third), I would never, ever use diatomaceous earth anywhere around my chooks. If you read the directions on the DE container, you'll see that you are supposed to wear a mask when handling it. That is to protect you from the possibility of getting a respiratory infection. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Don't use it around your chooks either because it will give them a respiratory infection. You can count on it. I generally like your videos and I am a subscriber but I just had to mention these three things. Thanks for listening.

Hi Becky....You have been so valuable to my new little flock...yes, very little flock. I only have two hens and a rooster. The hens were going wild laying eggs. I was getting 12 eggs a week just from these two cuties. However, over the past week and a half, Blackie stopped laying eggs and she looks a little slimmer. I'll try some of your suggestions. I'm going to subscribe to your channel.

Thanks Becky! My hens will soon have a perch, I'll clean the nesting boxes tomorrow and put in new straw and hopefully the organic laying mash will arrive at the feed store and I can get them back on their regular diet.

Love your videos. My mom has some ceramic eggs, and she also used golf balls in the nest.

It is amazing to me how all these city to the country people become experts on livestock and the country LOL I would not want to be Becky's chicken's, I grew up on a farm lived on my own farm all my life I found this quite interesting as someone who has made my living from livestock and crops on a family farm

Becky thank you so very much for uploading this video clip. After obtaining a couple of hens who laid every day then suddenly stopped. Yes they molted so we thought it was just that? But they didn't return to egg laying. After watching this video and another one you uploaded regarding their diet. I tried everything you suggested and it has obviously worked. Yesterday and again we have nice big eggs from one hen and looking forward to the other laying again real soon as well. Thank You.

My mom had two roosting posts in her chicken coop that we built by hand. Also don't wear any form of glasses on your face, whether it be sunglasses or prescription glasses. My mom went in her coop to check on the chickens one day and had some prescription glasses on her face. She ended up going to the local emergency room and getting some stitches to her nose as one chicken spazzed when it saw a flash of sunlight from my mom's glasses and the chicken flogged her in the face cutting a deep gash to her nose, ouch!!! Another thing I noticed is that the chickens seemed to respond favorably when I played my guitar nearby so I started going into the coop, seating myself near them and playing; the more soothing melodies seemed to have the best effect on them. My mom swore they were laying more eggs from my music playing. I don't know if it had that kind of effect but they would sure gather around me and hunker down falling asleep and napping. I reckon they liked the music. I learned how to pay attention to them and noticing different things about them. The older chickens seem to be the ones in charge the most. They had a lot to do with establishment of order in a coop. Roosters seem to mostly protect the flock and fertilize the eggs and believe me they will guard them with their life if need be. They will attack anything that tries to come into the coop at night for sure

Hey Becky, very cool youtube channel! We have road island reds and domineckers. One trick is turn the lights (red color for less stress) on about 3am (put it on a timer) for a little while. I don't do it to our chickens though as I think they deserve a rest in the winter time and the eggs don't taste as natural without all the bugs in their diet.

I admire and appreciate Becky's life style and hard work but I have to be honest here her advice on chickens is way off. First her young chickens are not laying because they are too young. All you have to do is look at their combs. Still too young. The one she points to and says look how big that one is, well that's a rooster not a hen. They are going to roost during the day not because they are tired but because the older hens are picking on them and it's an escape. Watch the video again you will see one of the older hens chase a younger one. The reasons a hens egg production drops has absolutely nothing to do with dirty nest boxes. The main reasons a hens production will drop is 1. shorter days, 2. an aging hen less. 3. illness. She is correct if they don't have enough to eat egg production will drop. I also have to say this I am confused as to how she has managed to keep chickens as long as she has. That coop just invites every predator in the world to come in and have a chicken dinner. My only though is she has a guard dog.

thanks Becky, we are just starting to warm up here in Washington. I gave my chickens powdered Oregon Grape Root herbs from Rose Mountain Herbs and since it is a immune booster I think they did real well. They are now back to laying real good.

chickens gravitate toward the high roost where they tend to fight for "king of the mountain". If the roosts are the same height there is less stress. Also, fat hens lay few eggs (Amish proverb).
