But Joshua the son of Nun, a servant of the Lord, died at the age of a hundred and ten years; 9. and buried him in the territory of his inheritance, at Timnath-Heres, in the mountainous region of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaas. 10. And all that generation was gathered also to their fathers, and after that there arose another generation that did not know the Lord, nor the work which he had done for Israel. 11. Then the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, serving the Baals; 12. they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and went after other gods, from among the gods of the peoples that were round about them, and worshiped them; and provoked the Lord to wrath, 13. forsaking him, and serving Baals and Ashtaroths. 14. Wherefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hand of the spoilers, who spoiled them; and he sold them into the hand of his enemies round about, so that they could no longer stand before them. 15. Wherever they went out, the hand of the Lord was against them for evil, as the Lord had spoken, and as he had sworn to him; and were in great distress. 16. But the Lord raised up judges, who delivered them out of the hand of those who spoiled them. 17. However, they would not hearken even to their judges, for they prostituted themselves after other gods, and worshiped them; they quickly turned aside from the path where their fathers walked in obedience to the commandments of the Lord; they didn't like them. 18. When the Lord raised up judges for them, he was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of that judge; for the Lord had pity on them because of their groaning on account of those who oppressed and afflicted them. 19. But after the judge's death, they relapsed and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, walking after other gods, serving and worshiping them; they did not abandon any of their practices, nor their obstinacy. 20. Wherefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he said, Because this nation has broken my covenant, which I made with their fathers, not heeding my voice, 21. I will no longer drive out from before them any of the nations that Joshua left when he died; 22. that Israel may test by them, whether or not they will keep the way of the LORD, as his fathers kept it, that he might walk in it. 23. So the Lord let those nations remain, and did not immediately banish them, nor deliver them into the hand of Joshua.
