These are imperishable works of a visionary that will last for ageless times. When they threw him into prison, his enemies could not lead the nation that he fought to create. No matter where you stand, Awolowo is the one statesman, living or dead, in the history of Nigeria that fulfilled his political manifestos and mandates bequeathed on him by the people he served. He never made a promise without fulfilling it. Let those who castigate him present their own candidate who can match up with Awolowo. Awolowo put his efforts where his mouth was. In the view of Ibrahim Badamosi Banbangida, the man we hate in the West, "Nigeria's history is the history of Awolowo." The statement is true from 1985 to date. Awolowo reveals immensely that Nigeria's lofty heights at independence are attainable. This is what we would live to pursue. Awolowo, we hail thee!

I am very glad that this video shows many Nigerians that Awolowo was a great man. Without this video, many Igbos would have never believed it if they had read it in a newspaper. No wonder Emeka Ojukwu said, "Awolowo was the best president Nigeria never had". Many have repeatedly told us that Nnamdi Azikiwe won independence for Nigeria. Why do these people repeatedly tell blatant lies?

Benard Benjani, someone said the same thing to me on facebook as well, that Zik won independence for Nigeria. I told the person, is he having a laugh?? So i asked him, what role did Awolowo played then? Don't get me wrong, I respect Zik, but he wasn't a visionary leader. Zik was a pan-Africanist. He returned home from America with pan-Africanism mindset, along with Kwame Nkrumah. Which was a brilliant mindset to have. So I agree with Ojukwu's point on Awolowo, the best president Nigeria never had.

"...why do people tell blatant lies???" With all due respect, go back to your history and stop making unnecessary comparison here. Each leaders played their role for our independence in their own capacity. so you have no right to discredit anyone here . It's highly disrespectful to Nigerians and in extension Africans to lowly Esteem 'Zik of Africa;' a core nationalist; a true Pan-Africanist. Do you know how the title "Zik of Africa." Came to be? If only the then Sultan of Sokoto, Ahmadu Bello, Awolowo and the rest had listened to Zik and set aside their political and ethnic interest, we would not be in this mess we find ourselves in today

Africa as a whole should have been a Power house for the world . But of course in this century we still can’t get it right . Don’t buy the excuse it’s about tribe…. No way. Africans (blood brothers hate each other over piece of dirt or land to the point of murdering each other ). So please the tribe, language or religion is just a mask to the inner hate and greed

Bcos immediately we got independence, rivalry began! western region declared themselves partially separate and Awolowo became Premier, The Eastern region wanted a nation of their own, the Northern region believed it is their right to rule. Look at us as a nation today, Jan2, 2024! ($1 = N1,200, £1 = N1,500, fuel is N700/litre) God pls help us!

They set us back instead of moving us forward. They placed Nigeria on the world map of corruption. People cry for the young to climb the Seat of Rulership. But the fact is it's this same youth that brought Nigeria down politically, and implanted corruption on its greatest height. Which and what youth are we crying for to come and salvage Nigeria? What we must search for instead is for a person who have the heart of Awò or Jkj in Nigeria. Age is not it. Nigeria had suffered so much now that it would not be too hard to find that visionary ruler in any part of Nigeria. Just remember that those that ruled Nigeria in the beginning including the military were all young. What did they do with their youthful age? Mandela ruled when he was old. The now American ruler is old! Who is that young ruler in Africa that is making waves that we want to follow as a man to emulate? So Nigeria, it is not age, but GOODNESS IN GOVERNMENT. Thank you.

The greatest mistake Nigeria and most African countries ever made was independence in 1960s. Where were the human resources to drive the developmental needs? How many teachers? How many graduates? What was the literacy level? Contrast this with South Africa that waited over 30 years after the bandwagon to get indeoence. You want to know why Africa is in mess, check this out!

Nigeria, especially the Western Region , had the required manpower to run a modern and progressive nation even as at 1960. Yes , the North was not yet ready but the South as a whole was. Independence could have been granted first to Southerners that have proved themselves while the North could join the rest of the country later, probably after about 20years. Alternatively, independence could wait for the whole Country till 1980 thus giving the South ample time to consolidate. Again Awo shouldn't have contested in 1959. It was a political miscalculation from which the South has not recovered even now in 2022.

@@oriowoayodeji8978 If you do a bit of research, 8th August 1957 the Western and Eastern region were allowed to govern themselves ( You could say they were partially independent if you like) but the North was still governed by the British. Independence was first proposed in 1953, but in 1956 the Northerners voted against it when the matter was brought up again because the Northerners were not ready at that time. Reason, they couldn't even boast of one graduate when the Western and Eastern region had a lot of them.
