I really enjoyed your approach to using a Scottish broadsword! Great form, with excellent explanation of the applications. My Highland Scottish ancestors would be proud. Thank you!

+Michael MacDonald Your scottish ancestors would tell you he's attacking in false time and not cutting with opposition. He is however defending his feet with footwork rather than parries, so that is correct. Read up on Thomas Page's or John Taylor's writings on the use of the scottish broadsword, each presents a complete martial arts system with the weapon in easy-to follow language and instructions, although Page is earlier and more advanced.

I was not expecting to enjoy this video as much as I did ,you seem to have captured an essence of technique that is common to all good martial displays ,and as a Scotsman I thoroughly enjoyed the musical skill and dexterity that you showed in that form ,thank you for sharing.Tom Adair

Definitely an interesting combo, but it's proof that it's not the weapon it's the man behind it. Really cool to see this and to be honest nobody can get to mad because most clansmen didn't have real sword training

I teach tradition Scottish broadsword but I also come from a Hung Ga lineage . I found the form to be very enjoyable to watch- with many interesting techniques. It was good to see the basket strike (a personal favourite). Much respect distant Martial Cousin!

+Ian Buchanan Slightly off-topic, but I don't quite agree on Silver's approach to shorter weapons having the advantage over longer weapons. Perhaps if one can break the long-rapier fencer's guard and get in close with his short blade, perhaps then...but if the man with the longer blade is as experienced as the man with the shorter blade, he isn't going to let that happen.
@TraveltheRedRoad

I believe Silver was perhaps overtly anti-rapier and would thus criticise it at every conceivable level

Just watching this again I forgot how much I enjoyed the concept. I encourage you to post more Scottish sword forms! Perhaps double broadsword or sword and shield, I'm sure your system has both you can draw inspiration from. Again my respect you and thank you again.

It's actually kind of amazing how weapon made for one culture's martial arts translate into another's. I've seen people use jian as if they were arming or side swords with absolutely no problems, as if that was the weapon they had practiced with all this time.

Thanks! Actually no, it depends how fast you are doing the form. But actually I don't find this sword to be really THAT heavy. The kungfu broadsword I use is heavier than this thing already, haha. I use a Qing style broadsword mostly for kungfu, you can see my most recent sharpening video with the whetstone and see the broadsword being serviced, haha. it's already heavier than this thing.

I really enjoyed your video! You perform what most re-enactors don't seem to ever do, and that is cut with the blade. Most people doing Western fencing forget that a blade has to be drawn or pushed for it to work and just chop away at each other. But chopping is for axes, not swords. Good job!
@forren9299
@forren9299 8 жыл бұрын
+Samuel Tyree the scottish broadsword was well adapted to chopping as chopping was the preferred method for our more mental clansmen.t

I would like to say, you're not really correct in saying the back edge, or false edge, is seldom used. In fact there are NUMEROUS techniques dating back centuries that employ that edge to cut with. That said, well done. A bit more stylized than how I or antoher Gael would've used it, but then, that is the nature of Kung Fu, to a large degree.
@lancerd4934
@lancerd4934 8 жыл бұрын
+Fyren Lokieiðr The false edge isn't used much specifically in Highland broadsword systems. In fact there's really only one cut that is made with it with any regularity, which is an upwards flick at the groin, and which was largely out of fashion by the end of the 18th century. Read John Taylor's system, it is an excellent introduction to highland broadsword, as well as a complete fighting system in its own right.

This is completely incorrect. We have texts for the use of Scottish Basket Hilt broadsword techniques going as far back as 1690 . The Scottish clansmen were extremely skilled and the warrior class of the Highlanders dedicated their lives to swordsmanship. After Culloden the Highlanders savage yet skilled fighters became the main fighting force if the British army which was one of the reasons for their success. Retired soldiers went on to become gladiators in London and Edinburgh. Fighting for entertainment.

***** "Going back to the 15th century [1400s]"? The basket-hilted broadswords, and backswords, did not exist until the late 16th century (1500s).
@grenowrackenderry558
@grenowrackenderry558 9 жыл бұрын
Ian Buchanan The earliest known particularly "Scottish" manuals for its use are from around 1690, but we have manuals for broadsword from as early as 1599, nearly 100 years earlier. The techniques are almost exactly the same, although the book was written by an Englishman.
@grenowrackenderry558

Connor Smith Part of what you say is true. Everyone does develop their own style, but they don't just come up with it on their own. Their style is greatly influenced by and is their own take on the techniques they learn.
