(Which is an album I adore) But after some decompressing, I do have my initial standout tracks 😁 I. The Worst Guys I. Pink Toes II. Shadows II. Earth: The Oldest Computer (The Last night)

Gambino actually wrote a 72 page screen play that syncs up with the album. "The star of Because the Internet is “the Boy,” the future estranged son of Rick Ross who gets his kicks trolling celebrities online and hosting mansion parties that only serve to amplify a nagging loneliness. The story tracks the Boy's helpless, irrational descent to his own undoing."

Was just about to mention this. That's why the roman numerals separate certain songs. Like, No Exit is the backing track to a nervous breakdown where The Boy tries to commit suicide by the end (The Spider is him; Brown Recluse). That's why the album changes pace the way it does. It like the 2nd act break in a movie.

@@ShelbyShuffleMode the music is supposed to be the soundtrack to the script. The album and everything connected to it is a whole experience. I HIGHLY recommend listening to the Dissect podcast season that's about this album, it will make things make SO MUCH more sense

The fact that Donald Glover, during his press run and touring for this album, did every interview and freestyle and appearance in character as The Boy, the main character from this album (and from the script that goes along with it) is just the icing on the cake. He never told anyone, he never said he was doing it, he just did it. Edit: I feel kinda bad for you that because your first Gambino album was Awaken My Love (which is absolutely the odd bird in his catalog) that you expected a bunch of songs of him singing. To this point in his career he was primarily a rapper that would sprinkle in some occasional singing. It's why AML was kind of a shock to everyone, like out of nowhere this rapper comes with a full on funk album with zero rapping.

Yeah it was kinda like backward because we were all very impressed by awaken my love but this at the time it came out like shook the world. Also Gambino has an interesting way of delivering what he’s talking about so you have to like dig through the layers which makes very interesting to listen to multiple times because you find yourself uncovering more and more about the album. If I could compare this album and To Pimp a Butterfly to a movie I’d say it’s like watching Inception for the first time.

because the internet is a grower, for sure. there’s so much to unpack lyrically, narratively, sonically… it’s incredibly deep and chaotic. it’s both dated and timeless at the same time - a relic of its time yet also a peek at the future. i think a lot of what inspired gambino for this album was seeing someone get killed outside of a club in atlanta. he talks more on that experience and the existential crisis it caused him on a b-side track, yaphet kotto: “We saw this kid get shot up by the cops in Atlanta/ They shot through his Phantom/ And tandem cannons were blamming him/ He was standing there like 20 seconds before/ Now he’s gasping for air, bullet holes inside of his dome/ What's the point? I don't know/ Why am I here? Why am I alive? Why do you care?” this is a recurring moment he’s recalled throughout his career, both in his music, the script for this album, and even atlanta as well. it had a really huge impact on both him and, subsequently, his art. it’s interesting to see how much he matured as an artist and person within such a short time period. this album very much feels like an existential crisis. it feels pointless, but that’s intentional. highly recommend reading the accompanying screenplay alongside a future listen for more context on the meaning behind the meaninglessness. the music videos are also visually interesting yet super bizarre at the same time. definitely worth a watch at some point! there’s a narrative to be pieced together through the videos that’s completely divorced from that of the album/script, too.

This has been in my personal top five albums since my very first listen, despite being wildly confused by it... but still eight years later my appreciation for it continues to grow, from all the album roll out stuff with the screenplay, the short film, the countless deep internet lore bits that you have to take the time to learn about and just the fact that no matter what every time I listen back to the album I still manage to always get something new from it, whether it be understanding a bar i never got before, or hearing one of the many instruments and crazy synths in the background... I just truly think this album never gets old, or at least hasn't yet

I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS. Childish Gambino is one of my favorite artists and his dual identity as an actor/writer/producer/etc is crazy! Some thoughts/points on the album to help you understand it! 1: There is a screenplay/scrip that accompanies the album. That is why you see it split into Four parts with "I. II. III. IV" etc. It resembles acts/scenes in the screenplay that accompany the album. Reading and following along with the album helps understand it more but I don't think you necessarily need it! 2: On top of the album, Donald Glover created a literal multimedia universe within the album. For example there is a main character named "The Boy". It is a character that you find while listening to the album and reading the script. He is the "rich kid" that goes through an identity and existential crisis. Other parts of this multimedia universe includes: short film's ("Clapping for the Wrong Reasons"), museum gallaries (although discontinued) a video game trailer, music videos, etc. There is quite literally a BTI rabbit hole! 3: You said in the video that the album felt "chaotic" and I agree 100%! I think that is what the internet is supposed to be as it is supposed to resemble the internet in a way: chaotic, fast paced, even confusing. Donald Glover has a long history of being an "internet star": Before the album rollout he was heavy on the internet. There was a Donald for Spiderman campaign for him to star in the Amazing Spiderman films. He was very active on twitter. ETC. The album sort of talks about his experience growing up in the Internet Age 4: There is a Because The Internet B side with cuts of songs that were supposed to be on the album but didn't make it. Some singing songs include "What Kind of Love" and "Melorse" and for more of his rapping songs there is "Yaphet Kotto" and "Centipede"! Check them out! There is a lot more to the album but I didn't want to make this an essay lol! If you want to check other avenues of this album/understand it more I recommend listening to the Dissect podcast, they did a season on BTI. Watch videos of the rollout of BTI too and there are also tons of video essays on this topic! TY so much for this video I loved it! No Childish album is the same and if you were to ever do a 3.15.20 reaction you'd see that statement being even more true lol. Happy Holidays!

Love this record. You're not wrong with your take. It definitely gets better with more listens. Every time I return to this album, I realize something I didn't beforehand musical & my opinions on certain aspects often recontexturalize. Also, the older I get, the more I just relate more. Donald was in a weird place writing & promoting this record. He had just left Community to start paving his own path & not everyone knew he was. Dude was having hella existential problems & thought he was making a lot of wrong decisions. This was a coming out party for Donald because the music was totally different from what he had put out previously. Off rip, I found myself loving Awaken more because it reminds me of music my parents listened to growing up but I think there's more thematic material to chew on with BTI. Plus, it's funny hearing Uber & Lil Durk references from album that kinda predates the hype of both. I. The Worst Guys II. Shadows III. Telegraph Ave. IV. Sweatpants I. Flight of the Navigator III. Also, Bino intended to create a whole universe with this album & he was successful with it. Would definitely recommend you listen to the live version for some of these songs, and these are some of my favorites: Shadows (the Arsenio Hall version) & Urn (he adds an extra verse to the song). Lastly, gotta listen to the album Stn Mtn/Kauai (I think it’s just Kauai though) cuz it’s a continuation or sequel to BTI. Good vibes & watch the music video Sober which also has a great live version from Triple J. He’s way better & different live so that’s why I recommend listening to them.

I hope so, because it is some of the most interesting and eclectic music one could listen to. Please check out the album California by the band Mr. Bungle. The singer’s name is Mike Patton, and he is the number one singer in terms of range in all popular recorded music. He has a range of over six octaves. The musicianship is top notch technicality while being wholly original and unique. I can promise that you’ve never heard anything like it, but will enjoy it.

this is my favorite type rap that cool and abstract and lyrical, one of the few albums that got my into rap, im not a fan of just traditional hardcore heavy bars with a generic beat, if someone was tell me what type of rap its an album with this that isnt basic that all

I would love for you to react to ATEEZ’s new album, a group who dabble in almost every music genre, Zero: Fever Epilogue. It is a repackage EP and was meant to be a gift to their fans, so it isn’t like a full album, but it’s amazing nonetheless. My Recommendations from the EP are Turbulence, Be With You and Answer: Ode to Joy!
