That's what I remember, seeing him doing it on SNL. The next day everyone was talking about a video and I'm thinking it's the SNL performance. Seen the video and was like this is on another level all together. I liked the SNL performance though, the lyrics and his performance were incredible. Hell he was incredible period the whole night.

He did the evolution of the way Blacks are seen in this country. His standing still at the beginning with his hands behind his back was a slave on the auction block. Then slowly, very slowly, his hands come down and now he must entertain the masses.

This remains one of the most powerful songs, and performances, ever made. I imagine if Prince was still alive, he would happily be in the back playing every instrument while Childish Gambino rapped.

The lights were done by Adam LaBay, a real beast on this field. And there is a video from Tom Scott ("Stopping A Laser Beam In Mid-Air") were they show how to make something similar (but at very smaller scale).

Can't ignore that, after the beat drops, the lighting cue is intentionally Cherries-n-Berries. As someone who has had a dissociative panic attack in the back of a squad car with those reds and blues clicking endlessly, it can't be missed.

Song is great no doubt. But how do the lighting affects work??? How did they get the lines to stop and start??? I want to guess that it was projected aligned from the camera but the dancers cross the beam. I'm sure it is probably stupidly simple so help me out
@DominiqueDefossezАй бұрын
anyone know what type those lasers at the back are? The start and stop in thin air, mind blown, how does that work? Wow and now the vortex he's in..
@JMMC100516 күн бұрын
It's a clever trick done by syncing up the lasers to the camera frame rate. In person, you'd see full beams like any other laser. The effect works because of something called 'rolling shutter'. Basically, the camera doesn't capture the full frame at once. Instead, it captures it line by line, very quickly. If the laser flashes for less than the duration of a single frame, it will only show up in part of the frame. By fiddling with the timing, the beams can be made to move up and down. It's the same reason why spinning propellers look like they are bending when filmed. They move while the frame is being captured.
