Southern Chile is beautiful and vast, but it is also the place in Latin America where an indigenous group is openly fighting for their land.
Al Jazeera’s Latin American correspondent Lucia Newman takes us through their struggles and explains why this conflict is so different from others in the region. “Some view it as the wild west.”
As Chileans prepare for a historical election, Latin American correspondent @LuciaNewman tells us what this means for the country’s indigenous population.

La gran mayoría de los Chilenos, tenemos sangre de los pueblos originarios. Amamos nuestra tierra, porque somos parte de ella. Tenemos arraigo y herencia cultural ancestral que esta presente en mayor o menor medida en la cotidianidad de la vida. Este país llamado Chile, diverso desde lo profundo es UNO SOLO

Siendo chileno nacido y creado en Europa... Nunca pude y puedo entender porque tanta gente del "pueblo" chileno estaban encontrá de los mapuches.. Bueno por lo que se vía por las noticias... Nos cuentan sus historias increíbles como los españoles ni lo Incas pudieron contra ellos y luego nosotros los tratamos como la mierda... 😢 Bueno porlomenos lo que se ha visto desde las protestas de 2018 me di cuenta que ese pensamiento esta campando pareces y eso me alegra. Perdón por mi no perfecto castellano :p

I live in Europe and I’m very happy with my life my freedom and my job. I’m originaly from Somalia I appreciate all that the country I live in has given me. But then other times I get a little bit angry at what Europeans have done to the rest of the world by colonizing the whole world. Taking other people land. Just take a look at Australia New Zealand Canada USA the whole of Latin America. They have done a lot of harm but then again they have brought a lot of prosperity to where ever they have settled so sometimes I’m really confused. We are all human beings I think we should just move on and start to learn to live together and create a better future for future generations.

But when islamic empires like turks and arabs invade and steal other lands it is ok for you, war and conquest was the natural state of the world before modern times, everyone did it, somalians too, its only now in modern times people can complain about it. Modern world wich europeans created trough industrialstion, ending slavery and implementaion of human rights, so dont be a hypocrite

these people are like the israelis of latin america both resisting and fighting an invasion, in middle east palestinian had been attacking and trying to invade israelis to steal their lands but luckily the israelis are strong enough to resist the palestinian invasion of the jewish lands

@@LeroyBrown It means supporting the Mapuche by pressuring the government to recognize their existence and their ancestral indigenous rights. Remember, they were colonized. The settler government has a responsibility to recognize that they are the foreigners in these lands.

@rvat2003 Bruh the Chilean STATE (not government, State) recognize Mapuche as "an indigenous people of Chile". Otherwise Mapuche couldn't vote a new Constitution (btw it failed). The thing is that Mapuche wants their lands back, more authonomy and that his legacy does not die (this can be observed in the Regions of Biobio, La Araucanía and Los Ríos), etc.

Wth are u saying?? Mapuche are not Chineses. They are people from south Chile & Argentina. If u are referring to genetics, it is because the Mapuche, like almost all the peoples of the Americas, are MONGOLOIDS, (that is, distant relatives of current Asians), which is confirmed. But the question is: which part (of Asia) do they come from? That is not yet confirmed. They may have crossed the Bering, or they may be Polynesians who arrived on Latin American shores (which by the way, Polynesians are also Mongoloids), among other theories. Read more bro. (This is said by a Chilean person who directly descended from Mapuche and who has read many history books, reports, etc.)
