I considered buying the Arctic Air for years, and more recently the Chill Well (after seeing their ad). Thanks for saving me money with your review. Based on your review I see the machines are based on a method people used to cool their homes prior to AC, which my grandfather told me about. He recounted that there used to be ice houses, which he described as barns that stored large blocks of ice cut from lakes and ponds, with straw packed between the blocks, and also straw between the blocks and the walls of the barn. The straw acted as insulation and prevented the blocks from sticking to each other. During the summer months you would go to the ice house (or buy ice from an ice house), chop up the ice and direct a fan to blow air across the ice into the room. As I recall it described, the ice was put in a container that the fans air could pass through, something like a small slotted laundry basket, with a pan underneath to catch the water from the melting ice. My grandfather said this effectively cooled small rooms. The Arctic Air and Chill Well have more bells and whistles, but it appears they do not have sufficient volume or area of ice water in front of the fan to actually cool.

Excellent presentation, well put to the point! Realistically I believe the best portable air conditioner is the Esky type one. Which is basically a portable ice cooler box with a fan on the top lid to suck the cool ice air out into the room! Try that for a review as it would be dripless & no mess.

Well I know u all think its a piece of crap, but I fill it up like ur supposed to before I go to sleep, and NOW, I sleep so good. With the chill well, my room is like 72 ,and without it is 78. Yes, I do keep it on my nightstand, it's worth it to me!! ALSO, I got mine off an add from Facebook. It Only Cost 49$ for 2 of them. Free shipping on 1 of them. I gave the other 1 to my son for his room . His room is smaller than mine and he loves his too, he says he also sleeps better! So honestly, I love this thing cause wethr I'm going to bed,reading or watching TV, it cools me down so I'm very Comfortable!!

Should have got the earlier incarnation though I can see that now. Our house is really well insulated and so I at this point I am happy with the little chillwell. I purchased a much larger item similar to this. Its a floor unit that holds near 3 gallons of water. Now i will say for those smaller units like the one in this review. They are all mostly just junk. The only way these smaller units are of any use at all are situational. Ideally if you have it parked on top of you. The other major factor in how well these kind of items like the one in this review work are based on current humidty levels where you are using the device. If you live somewhere that has high humidity. None of these devices are going to work as they claim what so ever. Now back to the floor unit i mentioned... The bigger floor type units do work. The one i bought was around $200. Seeing i live in California humidity is almost always below 40%. Making the unit do very well. I also bought a dehumidifier to run that actually feeds even drier air to the unit. Thus boosting its efficiancy. But again as i mentioned... Humidity is the deciding factor. If you live somewhere thats prone to high humidity avoid any kind of product like this as you are just waisting your $$$

I was looking at these and thinking about buying them for the upstairs bedrooms and the playroom, but I don't think I'm going to. Big swamp coolers do a decent job, but we've had enough portable swamp coolers to know they don't really work, and if you live where it's humid, they don't work at all. We've lived where it's humid and where it's dry, and we've experienced swamp coolers in both places, and this is just a waste of money. I'm really glad I saw this review! I bought a Chillwell. Your review is one of the few online that looks unbiased. I agree that this is best used in a room with basic air conditioning. And works best if the unit is close to you on your work desk or near your bed. It doesn't seem to cool my studio apartment much but it's decent for spot cooling. I do like the cool misting for added chill. And the lights are pretty as a night light. At first mine leaked but I raised the vents to higher angle so condensation doesn't leak and it's better.

Thanks bud…I’m glad I watched this before buying! Although 82 degrees is pretty warm to try and bring down the temperature from. But having said that…it doesn’t appear to do much of anything except waste energy!

My daughter bought me two of these as a Father's Day present. I'm a test engineer, so naturally I was curious about the performance, although I didn't instrument it like you did, I just did some qualitative tests. Knowing how swamp coolers work, I wasn't expecting a full AC and, BTW, nowhere in the literature or packaging does it use the term "Air Conditioner," just "AC." I presume that stands for "Air Cooler" which is the verb they use the most. I approached it as a personal cooler that you set next you you, like a small fan, but one that blows cooler-than-ambient air. For that function they both seemed to work fine at first. I set them up in the dining room and in my home office. Like you, I was shocked at the limited battery life since this is advertised as a "portable cooler." The instructions say that the unit "will run 8 hours on High, 10 hours on Medium and 12 hours on Low." This distinctly implies battery life (since the fan uses electricity), but doesn't explicitly say so. Like you, I got between 1 to 2 hours. I then thought that the time was referring to how long the tank of water would last, but that's a function of the misters, not fan speed. Speaking of the misters, I'm surprised that it uses them rather than a controlled drip onto the wick. What's the point of the wick assembly, if it's only to pre-soak and/or freeze? Once the wick thaws and dries out, the cooling drops off noticeably. One of the units actually blew mist out the front, which is a waste of the water since visible mist is made of water droplets that haven't evaporated yet. Further, this unit had so much condensation on the front that it dripped onto my desktop and wicked its way underneath forming a large rectangular puddle. As if to make up for that, after about 2 days of use, the misters stopped working all together. The instructions say if the unit gets too wet (like from a pouring mishap when filling) to let it dry out for 24 hours. I tried that, but it appears that only one mister is working. I'm checking it "live" as I'm typing this, so I don't have a final answer on this one. Bottom line, I hope my daughter didn't spend $200 on these two units. If you approach it as a desktop fan that cools a little, it works OK if you use it gently. Personally, I'd say $29.95 would be a good price point as functional value, but not $100.

What's really good about these USB swamp coolers, is that they can run off of a portable cell phone charging battery. I used to do that at where I worker because my work station was away from any outlets. On medium to low, it would last almost five hours. So, just buy a nice sized portable battery for charging us devices and you can have you space cooler anywhere Also you have to once in awhile check behind where the filter sits in because that can actually fill up with water and spill over. The way they designed it though is you turn off the mist when that happens, when the water gets high enough and what will happen is, much like with the first Arctic air that used to paper filter that Drew the water up into it, you can just run the fan on this one with that filter soaked, and it will put out cool air as water drains out of the filter container

I grew up with a very good evaporative cooler from Sears it was huge and we kept it on the shade between the houses not out in the sun like they tell you we lived fairly well it was always cool in our house so cold people called it a bar cool location location location like the ones you put through the roof don't nearly work as well was on the side of our house covered by a huge Bush that connected to a roof from the neighbor's yard it was evaporative cooler working at its finest people sore we have refrigerated air at a 10th of the price

Thanks, great review. Since this thing is a "Swamp Cooler" and not an Air Conditioner (A/C) I don't understand why they have not been hit with a false advertising charge. I remember a window mounted swamp cooler in my childhood that worked well for the living room, but then the usual humidity in the area is low and swamp coolers will work better in low humidity.
