In Uganda, the encroachment of settlements into the country's western forests has sparked a battle between humans and chimpanzees.
So far this year, chimps have killed or injured dozens of children, and locals are retaliating by hunting down and poisoning their protected neighbours.

Taking their home and land, cutting down all their trees, then wonder why they are attacked. They even mentioned in this video they just "lost" their leader 2 months ago, so obviously they killed him. These animals are highly intelligent. They know they are being killed by humans.

People in the comments seem to lack all empathy for these Ugandans. There is no easy solution. Kenyans have challenges with lions killing cattle and elephants plundering crops. Indians face similar issues. Human wildlife conflict is a problem in parts of the world that have a booming population threatening the natural ecosystem. In the UK, wolves and bears were made extinct around 1,500 years ago. It's no surprise commenters on here can only offer shallow responses. Solutions are much harder to come by in developing countries but these countries governments and universities are trying to resolve these issues. It takes time.

The real problem is increasing human population numbers, which encroach more and more into wildlife habitat. Maybe it's not so much that there is a lack of empathy for the Ugandan people, but that we are witnessing many animal species being pushed to the brink of extinction all over the world, due to human beings refusing to control their numbers.

The Ugandan Government needs to create job opportunities for these people so they can relocate. Create an infrastructure where you can create something to trade with another African nation. I was shocked some time ago when a documentary about a huge group of chimpanzees committed genocide on many other groups of chimpanzees for no reason . This made me think about the HIV AIDS disease which is present in these animals but they seem to have a resistance to it . Could there be a link to aberrant behaviour and cross contamination with humans ?

Those poor villagers. I’m a huge animal lover & advocate, and I understand that humans are encroaching on their habitats, but chimps in Uganda have been targeting, attacking & killing human children for years & it needs to stop. Sorry but I’m all for killing the aggressive chimps that attack humans to make sure it doesn’t happen again & make it clear that kind of behavior won’t be tolerated. I’d rather they fear humans & keep their distance than feel confident enough to approach. I love our closest relatives but I love human children more. Whether it’s right or wrong, I think we need to protect human children first & foremost.

Immensely strong animals with no compunctions about dismembering and eating other animals or humans alive. I’d tend to support the locals killing chimps when and as required, from the point of view of self defence, in the immediate term, treating this as the emergency situation it is, and the onus placed by right on the government to provide the commensurate investment for relocation or secure separation. The chimps don’t deserve to be persecuted, the people don’t deserve to lose their lives or the lives of their children, it isn’t a zero sum game, solving this type of issue is part and parcel of a governments raison d’etre.

This is the downside of America and other western-world countries telling Ugandan and Tanzanian governments, "We love your chimps and local wildlife, if you keep an eye on them, make sure they're not killed, we will provide you aid, money, resources, and medicine" No matter how poor the country, there's always 10-12 government men in uniform with rifles, protecting Chimps, gorillas and national wildlife parks. The need our support. They want to make us happy, and eventually, in a lot of ways, the chimps are more important than their own citizens. Let those nasty chimps go extinct, who cares.
