Buddhism got divided into two sect hinayana and Mahayana. Hinayana followed true teaching of Buddha and treated him as a master. Whereas Mahayana treated him as God and was greatly influenced by brahminism (corrupt form of Hinduism). Hinayana ended 3 to 4 centuries later bcoz of lack of state support. Mahayana florised and later on divided in many sects.

Basically, this temple is in a nature reserve region. 20 years ago, when the law was not enforced strictly due to lack of polices, a lot of rich people illegal build houses inside those nature reserve region . Many temples in nature reserve region built overheight statues to attract more tourists. The government noticed about illegal building inside those reserve region a few years ago, so they enforce strict law and demolish them, it is that simple. There are thousands of temple in China. If it is not in nature reserve region, there are even more statues that are higher and more expensive than this.
