China is said to be preparing a series of retaliatory actions against the European Union for its proposed tariffs on electric vehicles. The likely targets include cars, alcohol and many food items. Stephen Engle reports on Bloomberg Television.

We should never forget who called the first shot, it was the EU under duress from the US, that unilaterally declared tariffs of Chinese EV even though China is selling at 30-40% premium of what they sell in China. Moreover EV as a percentage of car sales in EU is still very low, and it would remain low depending on how fast the adoption is by the consumers. So all these fear of Chinese EV is future based fear which we don’t know would happen.

EU is digging its own grave. Auto sales in China have already been slow for a couple years, and the trend is continuing, especially for foreign cars, imposing 25% more tax is like putting the last nail in the coffin. I don't understand how tariffs can fix the problem of competition, if you cannot compete, you should find ways to improve yourself, and find solutions instead of creating problems. Tariffs are not a solution, it is a problem.

How can you compete against state run subsidies? It doesn't matter what you do or how much value you add to the car you produce. Why can't you comprehend that simple fact? Also, not everything is all about price. China's EV's have a lot of problems like spontaneous combustion. These cars haven't even been tested extensively for safety. And we all know that China constantly flouts international standards with regard to safety.

"If a nation can't compete, work harder" - So countries that aren't China are just supposed to magically subsidize car companies to produce cheap EV's despite being privately owned and goes against market capitalism in the developed world? There is no competition here. It's called exploiting loopholes which also goes against the WTO which China IS a signatory.

@@patrickt49 Subsidizing anything does not make the product cheaper, at least not for the country that is doing the subsidizing. Subsidies cost money, which has to be calculated to the total cost of the product. Cheap EV's are a benefit to the consumer that purchases them. This allows the consumer to have more money for other important things, like saving for retirement, braces for the kids or a vacation. Trade wars leads to higher prices, shortages and real wars. But slapping that tariff on, sure makes proud men feel real powerful. But it will backifire, just like all the other times we tried this.

No, we will only fight back in areas that have the least impact on us. Boeing has become garbage, and the production capacity of C919 is far from enough to meet the needs of the Chinese market, so we will not reduce our purchases from Airbus. Agricultural products are the best commodities to fight back.

After a long detailed conversation with AI (I love AI) Basically China has the capacity based on Strategic moves they have already moved on (CIPS, BRICS, Global South, Development Bank, Shanghai Initiative, BRI, Etc.) and what they learned when they had their zero COVID Policy shutting down the Supply Chain (Economic Self Sabotage to learn how to manage their economy when exports drop). China can completely ditch exporting to the US within 1-2 years. In Which Amazon, WalMart and many other US Companies would most likely go bankrupt or result in mass layoffs. To normalize relationships with the EU 🇪🇺, China needs to: - cancel the "No Limits" agreement with Russia, - stop undermining EU sanctions against Russia, - talk with Taiwan president-elect Lai Ching-te on an equal basis, - open independently a study into Wuhan pandemic, *- stop atrocity of Tibetans and Uyghurs,* - obey the Hague Tribunal 2016's decision on the SCS, - Leave European intellectual properties alone, and *- stop unfair overcapacity exports to EU.*
