Although Empresses in the Palace is a great series (I love it too btw) it is based on a novel set in the Song dynasty. Yeah, I was kinda disappointed too to know that the series had very little historical accuracy. But great performances - Ruyi's Royal love is also good. The actress playing Ruyi is phenomenal!

It was a common practice in the past to spread as if emperor to seem had questionable upbringing or heritage to weaken the legitimacy as an heir of throne, usually was done by opposite party.

In this day and age, a DNA test should be performed to dispell any doubts about his heritage.

The legends about Hongli not being the son of Consort Xi or Emperor Yongzheng are just that... legends, none of it holds water. Like the legend of The Man in the Iron Mask or Anastasia Romanov... Even the stories are later proven groundless, people still enjoy talking about it, especially from entertainment standpoint.

Dramas are loosely based on historical events but are largely still fictional works by web novel writers. 1) Ula Nara is not even her correct clan and Ruyi isn’t her real name. None of the consort’s personal names were even recorded. 2) Step Empress was not his true love childhood sweetheart like in the drama. She is 7 years younger than him. He got married at 16 years old in real life. 16 year old Hongli wanting to marry an 9 year old? That’s just weird and in any case she wouldn’t have been eligible for the selection process of a concubine at that time. 3) According to the historical records the closest he had to a true love was his first wife Empress Xiaoxianchun. He gave her total honor, respect and favor. Selected both her sons as his successors when they were only little kids, frequently wrote poems for her, promoted her entire family, was heartbroken after she passed on, disowned his eldest son for not respecting her burial, punished and executed officials who broke mourning protocol, kept her entire Changchun palace unchanged after her death as if she never left, wrote more poems for her even years after her passing and had her buried in his personal tomb right next to him. 4) Consort Ling couldn’t be an Empress, she was a Han Chinese with a lower social status. Empress positions during the Qing Dynasty was reserved for Manchu women and thereafter Mongol women too. The Manchus never viewed the Hans as their equals. She actually was elevated to Empress Xiaoyi by Qianlong in 1795 after announcing her son as his successor. She was the first and last Han woman to ever be granted the Empress title during the Qing dynasty.

In Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace Empress Ulanara outlived the emperor by a little while; however in history she actually predeceased him by several years. Emperor Yongzheng never promoted any of his consorts to be the next Empress

Ula-Nara became an Step Empress of Emperor Qianlong but, unfortunately, like her aunt the late empress she was disregard or overthrown by the Emperor because of jealousy (if I'm not mistaken?) She cut her hair infront of the Emperor which considered as a taboo of the Manchurian women. It's only allowed if there's is a national mourning.
