China has unveiled a new vision for an economic and cultural future unified with Taiwan.
The self-governing island is days away from voting for a new president.
The announcement is seen as Beijing’s latest attempt to influence voters in Taiwan, which it claims is Chinese territory and has vowed to retake by force if necessary.

WRONG! If that were true the Hong Kong People would have EMBRACED going back to China. I don't see a problem with Taiwan being a separate government. The people there clearly have their own political culture and their own global importance, if they become just another Chinese province and send their money in taxes to Beijing instead of using it on themselves it will be a tremendous loss. They can still be Chinese and have Chinese culture, they don't have to be ruled by Beijing to do so. Just like Austria and Germany are separate and nobody has a problem with that

Ah, but the CCP conflates itself with Chinese identity and culture and sees itself as the sole guardian.Never mind the fact that the CCP has wrecked Chinese culture during the Cultural Revolution and undermined key Chinese values such as Confucianism. Both Taiwan and HK became rich and democratic WITHOUT any help from mainland China. Moreover mainland China STILL has not reached the living standarts of both of these regions. And yet, they claim they have rights to rule over these regions, even though they did NOTHING to develop them, they just want to take control and money for themselves. Taiwan can be completely Chinese, you don't have to be a Beijing controlled province to call yourself Chinese. The real reason PRC wants to control Taiwan is simply to seize the Semi conductor industry, and also they hate the idea of a democratic China where people can have freedom to choose their own government. I don't think the world, Taiwanese people, Taiwanese government, or most mainland Chinese people have any problem with the concept of 'one China' in terms of geography and culture. BUT the CCP insists of taking 'one China' to mean 'one Chinese government - the CCP'. The CCP is not 'China' just the ruling structure for less than a century, and the CCP has never been the government of Taiwan. I'm sure Taiwan wouldn't mind closer cultural and trade ties with the mainland, but (most of) the Taiwanese people seem to not want to end up like Hong Kong -- promised 'two systems' only to find out a few years later that to the CCP this means everything controlled by the CCP and just a token 'local government' stacked with pro-CCP flunkies. Hopefully the military experience of Russia's attempted invasion of Ukraine (failing even with direct land and rail connections) has given Xi some second thoughts about an amphibious invasion of Taiwan. In a decade or two Xi will have aged out, and Chinese demographics might make peaceful co-existence and economic cooperation more attractive than some attempted military takeover of Taiwan just to impose a new pro-CCP government. BTW, if XI is so keen on bringing all of China together under one government, perhaps he could step down and let whoever wins the Taiwanese election head a new 'all of China' government, based in Taipei ? ;) Basically everything the glorious CCP claims to have done for mainland China (economic development, reduced poverty etc.) has been done in Taiwan, but even better. But the CCP has to cling to the 'people owe everything to the CCP' line in order to maintain a one-party system where the professional politicians don't have to deal with inconveniences like public dissent, an opposition, or elections where the voters have a real choice/alternative to pick from.
@pervertt
@pervertt 6 ай бұрын
Exactly. "One China" is a fiction, a euphemism for Taiwan under the boot of the CCP. It conveniently ignores the reality that Taiwan has a rich history that makes it quite distinct from the mainland and has never been ruled by the CCP. I wouldn't give Xi too much credit for learning from the mistakes of his "limitless" friend Putin. Both men are nationalists, prioritising the grandeur of the state over the liveihoods of their people. Both have dealt ruthlessly with their political rivals (see what happened to Navalny and Bo Xilai). Both do not brook dissent and have surrounded themselves with yesmen. And both have their respective militaries under their thumb and have openly expressed a willingness to use force.

The one China policy has been more of a problem, in the long term. Taiwan should have declared independence early on and given up it's claims on mainland China - which have left open opportunities for the CCP to behave as they are now. Taiwan was never going to be a threat to Beijing after they lost the civil war. Chang kai-Shek was being foolish - as he had been before numerous times.

It's very strange that the mainlanders still use the word 'reunification,' believing that Taiwan was once part of the People's Republic of China. Taiwan was part of the Japanese Empire from 1895. The PRC came into formal existence in 1949 and Taiwan remained in limbo. Since being relinquished by Japan in 1945, it has remained an independent entity, under its own governance, until today. After the Communists seized power, they've always made the grand assumption that former Qing Dynasty era land somehow, and by some weird logic, belongs to them. Strange thinking ...

Effectively it's like a political factions war in 1 country 2 land pieces. The mainland and an island. The main people race is the same in ethnicity / ethnic origin (not like some geographically distant land colonization for those here BBC watchers who dont seem to realize that). Still hoping against the odds that both governments will Diplomatically engage and negotiate the possible structure of that.. with a change of focus away from western rhetorical claims of pure democracy glories.. to practicalities like drawing up a legal framework for the topical boundaries of present living aspects of life there that the mainland's communism must leave entirely with the island nation's local governance can maintain as it is with no threat of unwarranted persecution just for being themselves. (Eg CCP to understand/realize it's OK AND NO THREAT for everyone to continue to have normal human rights such as to hold on to their personal held and practiced beliefs etc). Seriously I suggest some of us start praying for the supposedly impossible things. And may God grant there be not even an attempt at war from either side with this reunion. Taiwan was never officially a part of China. China controlled Taiwan during the Qing Dynasty, which is why they think Taiwan belongs to them. But there were long periods of time when they were not controlled by the Chinese. For example, Taiwan was ruled by indigenous people, the Dutch, and Spanish. Taiwan was also colonized by Japan for 50 years which has influenced Taiwanese culture. If Taiwan belongs to China, it also belongs to the indigenous people, the Japanese, Spanish, and Dutch. But it belongs to no one because they are an independent country 🇹🇼

So this looks like it was recorded in Fuzhou, Fujian. The people there are highly patriotic, nationalists. Ask them if Taiwan is China and they will all sheep the same response. The fact is Taiwan isn't part of China, and the people from China were nearly all from that one province, long before there was even a China as we know it today. Indeed, they were something like 90% men, and Taiwan itself was a mixture of melting pot cultures from around Asia, and has seen many take overs and other Emperors flee to it. The thing is, the Chinese propaganda only focuses on a specific point in history to argue their case, leaving out other parts. Another fact is that the CCP, and Mao never once set foot on Taiwan, and so cannot really claim it.
