China readies to host World Economic Forum's 'Summer Davos' in coastal city of Dalian

Chinese officials will be on a charm offensive to woo foreign investors, as the coastal city of Dalian gets ready to host the World Economic Forum's second largest annual gathering. Otherwise known as the Summer Davos, about 1,600 local and international participants from business, government, civil society and academia are expected to attend. How has the role of the meeting evolved over the years? Olivia Siong reports from Dalian.

Dalian is a very beautiful coastal and garden city in China, ranking second only to Singapore in the Asian Garden City Rankings.

It only looks better. It's actually all tofu garbage that isn't maintained. China has bridges and buildings collapse every day. They have massive sink holes in the middle of a city. Elevators and escalators collapse and kill people all the time... It only looks nice because it's new. In 10 years it will look like gaza

Not likely. No matter what Chinese private firms do, the actions of the Chinese government dictate the investment environment. The economic limits of typical autocratic governments has been hit. When the government dictates which businesses prosper, survive or die, it is time to look elsewhere.
