China has been remodelling its public transport network as part of its green push. In 2017, the southeastern city of Shenzhen became the world’s first to have its buses go fully electric. Since then, cities like Beijing and Shanghai have followed suit. China is the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, and experts say pollution was a major factor in its decision to make the switch.

To everyone saying China is the biggest CO2 emitter. China is also the world's factory. They produce and manufacture a large % of the world's goods while having the most population. Yet in terms on CO2 emission per capita, they are not even in top 20 of CO2 emitters. In fact, U.S emits twice as much as China while having very little manufacturing output China having 4x the population of U.S + being the World's factory While emitting half the CO2

Don't forget to factor in total historical emission. The combined CO2 emission by the collective west (including Japan and South Korea) far outstrip China and way way way ahead of the rest of the world. We wouldn't be in this mess in the first place if the west stopped emitting so much carbon way back then. They had the chance to stop emitting so much. They had the capital, and the technology to make the switch. It would have been painful but we wouldn't have used up all the carbon debts if it were not for the west's, especially the US, irresponsible usage of fossil fuels. If the west really was all about equality, freedom, democracy, justice and fairness for all people in the world, they would have force themselves to transition over to renewable and nuclear before the 2000s, and we would have far more carbon headroom for the developing countries to use cheap energy to develop. They would have also help the developing countries leapfrog over to renewable and nuclear after the initial development was done. But they didn't do that. They CHOSE to keep using cheap energy to sustain their decadent standard of living and now they want the rest of us to cut back and stop developing because the world is on fire. They can go F themselves.

Per capita, it's not the largest emitter. Do you expect a nation of 1.4 billion to have the carbon emission of Vatican?? not to mention we outsource our manufacturing to China, which means much of their pollution are not theirs to begin with meanwhile the United States, a fourth of China's population, consumes 30% more oil than China, let that sink in. It's also so easy for a developed nation to point fingers at developing countries, when you already went through the industrial phase and have tens thousands of factories in developing nations...

Many of these manufacturers are winning tenders in Norway, too, and the busses work as expected. It's a great application: On heavy vehicles, the added weight of batteries doesn't matter much. In cities, reduced local pollution is extra appreciated. And the very real noise reduction matters greatly in residential areas. Once most of the charging capacity is providing by green power, this is real step into a better future.

China is indeed the biggest emitters of CO2 because it has a huge population and is a big country. But measured on a per capita basis, middle eastern countries are ranked at the top. The big 3 emitters which happened to be huge countries (China, USA, India) are not even near the top on a per capita basis. But if you want to measure total output since the time of industrialisation, then I daresay USA is still holding Number 1. EU as a region may come close since industrialisation started in Europe and London is like how Delhi looks today, or even worse.

Wait...What? E- bus has over half the emission of a diesel bus? How? What is the e-bus emitting? Electrons?
@cedriclynch
@cedriclynch 9 ай бұрын
The statement that the E-bus emits more than half as much as a diesel bus refers to carbon dioxide emission if the E-bus is charged only with electricity generated from coal.
@kevinlin4895
@kevinlin4895 9 ай бұрын
@@cedriclynch but you can't say definitively how much of the electricity is generated by coal, it varies based on the country, and has nothing to do with the vehicle itself. Even then , that's carbon footprint, not "emissions".
@cedriclynch
@cedriclynch 9 ай бұрын
@@kevinlin4895 I think you can say that the electric bus has lower carbon dioxide emission than the diesel bus; how much lower depends on the source of the electricity. If someone finds a way to make diesel fuel at low cost from substances whose supply is sustainable (and not competing with food crops), the diesel bus might become better than the electric bus. The total carbon footprint and running cost of an electric vehicle depend heavily on how long the battery lasts. With a lead-acid battery most electric vehicles (other than ones operating only at very low speeds) are not economic because of the depreciation of the battery, but the lithium-ion battery is a big improvement on this point and is continuing to be improved.

Solar panels covering the top of a bus would have an output of about 4 kilowatts. Maybe 30 kilowatt-hours each day. This would be a useful contribution but would not cover the whole energy requirement of the bus; these are several times higher.

Common sight is that generation for EVs kicks up electricity consumption. I hope that wouldnt happen
@ZweiZwolf
@ZweiZwolf 9 ай бұрын
It's false. EVs have ZERO tailpipe emissions, whereas gas & diesel always have CO2 emissions. EVs are as green as the generation, which is roughly half renewable solar, wind & hydro in China today, and growing faster every year. Even if electricity is entirely thermal coal / oil / gas, it's still cleaner than gas & diesel, because the big plants are more efficient and typically incorporate scrubbers to minimize CO2 emissions at the smokestack.

EVs have ZERO tailpipe emission, but they do have a carbon footprint that's partly from indirect smokestack emission if any of the electricity is generated by thermal (coal, oil, gas) energy.
