Except for a couple of tall buildings, their infrastructure, especially transport, is about 50years behind even tier3 city in China. Except for Taipei which I felt was rather messy, the rest of Taiwan is pretty backward, and people are not particularly friendly.

Couldn't China just like, make a deal. Taiwan independent, but treated as an international ally instead of a province? Without the treat of war Taiwan wouldn't need to rely so much in the United States, so they could make amends to the closest potency, China.
