Yeah, i sympathise. I married a Chinese lady and moved here twelve years or so ago. Noise is a horrendous problem, and in my experience, the Chinese themselves don't seem to be bothered by this at all. We moved several times in Shenzhen (at my insistence), to try to get away from the constant drilling, banging, heavy vehicles ploughing through the streets at all times of the day and night, to no avail. So then we moved to our permanent apartment in Dalian - not any better, even though we live in a so-called "up-scale" part of the city. I'll never figure out the constant building, with the many thousands of empty apartment blocks and buildings just left to fall apart. There's no maintenance AT ALL - not even simple decorating or maintenace by the people living in the apartments. God! It drives me bonkers. I'm in a permanent state of sleep deprivation. Great channel, even though the subject matter often drives me insane. Stay happy.

As a local Chinese, I can say that most of the Chinese drivers have good skills, they just don't give a dam shit to break the rules or potentially to kill me.

You have many ancient philosophers, whom say to respect others and to take care and think carefully about your actions, your martial arts teach this, all sorts of things teach this in China, your government has LAWS against these traffic violations... SO... WHY? Everything should point towards taking responsibility and thinking about your actions, but then why do so many NOT do so, in traffic?? Makes no sense...

2 reasons. First is the culture revolution happen from 1966 to 1976. During these years, the Chinese government was stopped functioning followed by massive chaos across all over China. Generation who grew up in this period are not very good people, they couldn't care less about others and they may once beat their teachers to death during the time. Second reason is that after the culture revolution, the opening up and market reform made some people much richer, however it created the problem of uneven wealth distribution. The poor thinks society dumps them and the rich feel insecure and think money talks. So they all think rules are not something they can't break. For the first reason, it is easy "Death will eventually take care of this generation". For the second reason, it needs everyone's effort and it is a long term mission. But the good thing, which I can observe through my eyes, is that the youth in China are very promising, especially in developed cities. They are polite and law blinding children. To be honest the teenagers in Australia and US are not as good, I was once forced to give a group of 13 or 14 years old kids cigarettes on the streets in Sydney. While the adults are cool, I guess they just need to beat their kids a little bit like all Asians do.

Well i heard some one lost his mind and spent 1000$+ on sound isolation on one room. Apparenty it was worth every single penny. Sound isolation+earplugs=peace of mind

Believe me, not just Foreigners, Chinese people suffer from this zhuangxiu noise from others as well. However when it comes to one's own turn, he just do it without any hesitation. It's kind of the group ideology among Chinese people, just like the red fine ticket (wedding invitation), I hate to get it from somebody I don't really know very well, however when it comes to my own turn, I just sent a hell of lot out :P

Workers slacking off, companies trying to save money with poor quality construction materials, and no quality inspectors. If there is a quality inspector, he'll most likely be bribable. Beside, most of the construction workers aren't even qualified.

You don't own land in China, you lease it from the government, and for residential buildings the maximum lease is only 70 years. Hence there's no practical or economic value in building anything designed to last more than 70ish years.

Does anyone else want to see a video on motor vehicle laws in China? Not only do I see what would be outrageous violations of law by cars in the US, I see C-Milk and SerpentZA driving on sidewalks, emergency lanes, etc. Looks like the wild west on (and off) the highway.

Makes me wonder... how on earth does it take 1 month to redo one apartment? There are so many things that i dont understand here... why do you have to remove the whole fucking stucco (i hope that is the right word) from the wall? They redo the wires? Why dont you just repain that shit and get yourself some extension cables? Ok, i've noticed on the other videos that the corners maybe break... but FIX THOSE and dont redo the whole fucking place... get yourself some paint and save some money (that you can use for better quality, so you dont have to do it again next year) Ok... you want to redo your floor? In Germany many people use parquet floor... in China they maybe use floortiles... but to remove that shit shouldnt take you so long... and if you do it with 3 people you should be super fucking fast. Wtf are those idiots doing?

DreaMeRHoLic because they do a lot of works. When we buy a home in China, it comes with nothing in it. We have to install floors tiles faucets toilets lights socket switches and kitchen cabinets etc. by ourselves. Many of those homes are actually bought new as investment and the work were never done before. When people need to move in they have to do these works.

DreaMeRHoLic : They strip the places back to the bare concrete walls and floors, until the apartment is a shell. It doesn't matter if the apartment was only "reconstructed" one year previously and then sold, the new owner will have all the year old decorations removed and replaced with their own choice. Plus, as @cachem11 says, new apartments are generally sold as empty shells and *everything* has to be installed and fitted by the owner.

They explain this in the video: Chinese people don't like previously owned stuff. They want it brand new for themselves. They're spoiled brats; they were likely raised in single parent households after all.

A home means a lot for us. There are not many young people in other nations want to own a home as much as we do as they are happy with rentals, but most of us will try to own a home before 30. I can safely say that not all of Chinese people hate the décor from previous owners. A preowned nicely furnished property is selling for much more than a home with very basic decors in reality, which makes no sense if all of us would do the home improvements all over again after buying a home. Labor is still inexpensive in China, but those workers get paid 70-100 USD a day in places like Shenzhen. Not that affordable for majority working class. People in other regions are not as superstitious as Cantonese.

As a local, all my friends and I hate it for sure. That is why I decided not to Zhuang Xiu my second hand apartment. My neighbors just love me. But the problem is how to deal with it, the corps won't give a shit unless someone got injured, and the ZhuangXiu company won't care, they just want the work to be done ASAP.

When you buy a property in China its literally completely barebones, they even take down interior walls, you're expected to install literally everything yourself from walls to kitchen benches and sinks ect.

I'm sorry to say, but I live in central Stockholm in a 7-story building, and we have renovation fever here as well. There's always a neighbor on some floor who is renovating because they just moved in (heaven forbid you're using the previous owners toilet), or renovating because they're selling their apartment. The low interest rates don't help the situation either. With such ridiculously low interest rates, people with money left after buying an apartment has no incentive to partially pay off their mortgage, but instead spends the money left over on renovating the bathroom, kitchen or both. Long story short: I feel for you guys.

As a Chinese, I agree with facts in the video. They are big concerns especially in mid-size cities or newly emerged area. The thing is there isn't too much regulations, right now I live in U.S. and if you doing something not within the regulations you gotta pay a HUGE amount of fee for what you did, so everybody is afraid of doing them. But in China the fee you pay seems little compare to the profit you gain from breaking rules, and you can do them over and over again! Few years ago it was even worse when anti-corruption laws weren't enforced as much. Before president Xi was a president, corruption in China was really bad

China urban cities are never meant to be tranquility. It is about vibrant in all its positives and negatives. If that is not the attraction, why would CMilk come to China, from some sleeper towns in USA? :) For Wilson, he is a man without a country, literally, after the blacks (I am not politically correct, so deal with it!) took South Africa and grind it into a halt. He has no hope in South Africa so he has to move to somewhere. The job opportunities brought him to China. He got a great wife and he settles forever. I mean that is the life he wants, absolute safety, fresh food and a wonderful woman that the whole internet envies. Lucky dude! :)

There's this older couple that lives in my girlfriends apartment building in Huzhou right below her and their daughter is getting married so they're doing construction in their apartment in order to add an extra room for them to live in. I couldn't believe when she called me to show me just how loud the construction sounds were at 7 IN THE MORNING on a Sunday, this construction goes on every Saturday/Sunday now until it's complete. Couldn't believe this was allowed so early on a weekend. I asked her if it was illegal and she said you get used to things like this.

I had the same problem with noise during my internship in Xi'an... we lived on the first (ground) floor, but there was a small storage space below us that they decided to turn into small apartments. Drilling would start at 07.30 and go on the whole day. It took them about a month to finish.

Awful. I have "mini-china" in my apartment since I have the same thing going on, albeit it happens less, recently. My neighbors apparently love home renovation or something.. Hearing those drills and what have you reverberating through the entire apartment, be at it 6 AM or 4 AM in the worst cases.. And yah, the worst is definitely the vibration you can feel. Even if you turn on music really loud to try and drown it (which cannot really happen) you can still strongly feel things shaking... Ugh.. It literally drives me insane during the worst periods. I got earplugs now, so it helps a bit at least..

sometimes im too nice in China. My wife, Chinese, wants to hammer things on the walls in the weekend but i tell her no its not good too much noise. Yet minutes later its noise everywhere.

Tom T you think it's bad in America. You have more Chinese overall in America but we have proportionally more in Australia. You have about 0.3% while we have 2.5% About 600000 of the population with most in Melbourne and Sydney. So it's like 50% in the CBD of Sydney. Sydney is the most expensive property in the world second to Hong Kong as a result. No one can afford to live now. Sydney's average house is 1.1 million and that's for s piece of shit. It's fucked. Not to mention they walk along the street and ignore you walking into you (cause we walk and drive on the left but they are so fucking arrogant or stupid they think the locals have it wrong and should move for them walking on the right). Australia is a whore and sold its kids future to the highest bidder. Some people got extremely wealthy as a result but most have been sold out if they never got in to investing in property.

They are moving into all the major cities on the west coast of USA. I am here in Los Angeles. And I think that the Chinese people make up like 15% of the population. And more are coming. And they buy up all the houses in nice areas.

@@tomt7079 i think you're thinking too much into this, but there's truth in it. This is one of the pitfalls of Western immigration policy. China is too strict, Europe (and America to a lesser extent) is too lax. Europe has a huuuuge problem with Islamic refugees totally eroding European culture, and self-loathing far leftists let it happen. Sweden is appalling these days. That's a much bigger issue than rich Chinese people pumping money into Western economies. They aren't the ones to worry about.

Ay I am the same after 2 years. Typical nong attitudes drive me insane. While they virulently defend china - themselves however would do anything to immigrate abroad and live up the western lifestyle with freedom, equality, safety and relax lifestyle. Wumao is just jealous of us :)

Last time we went to Beijing, the same thing was happening in the apartment above us. I swear, it sounded like they were trying to break through the ceiling into our apartment. And I was trying to work with that noise going, the whole day...

OMG guys I love your videos. Now I know why this lady in Korean Town stopped her car in the middle lane to go grocery shopping, she used the street as a parking lot, it was madness. Also in the Chinese neighborhoods of Los Angeles, Chinese families buy a house and they demolish it and build massive homes. Now I understand why? It's quite evident many of the workers have no training/skill. No doubt it takes them twice as long as a professional would, with potentially disastrous results for building safety.

Don't count on it. Take it from me, we went through the same thing in Spain. When the real estate bubble pops new construction will stop, but renovation will get even stronger. All of the unemployed construction workers will flood into the renovation industry, driving down renovation prices, and then they will have a big renovation boom with more noise than ever! Sorry... don't shoot the messenger. xD

Come to my part of Sydney where for the last 2 years, right across the road, we've had massive buildings being demolished and even bigger apartment buuldings being built on the same site - 6 days per week, from 7am, of every type of demolition + construction noise possible, and won't be finished anytime soon. I've had this in Nanjing for a while when they built the subway line in 2015. Then one morning on the roof and one afternoon in an apartment on the same floor (all in one year). But most of the time it was calm, especially in my second apartment. To be fair, I've had such neighbors in Switzerland for weeks drilling hand hammering and no complaints helped. The same dude was also screaming and beating up his wife and not even the police did do anything about. Orher neighbors in Switzerland were also noicy as heck. And also other countries I lived at I had noicy neighbors with loud music on Friday and Saturday nights. Unfair to finger-point only on China.

I feel your pain. Living in Czechia, but people here buy cheapest drills, so they drill one hole for tens of minutes. I understand the need to do reconstruction work. But can't people just buy or borrow more expensive drill, which will make a one hole in 10s? Dang.

At least in Shanghai you aren't really allowed to rennovate outside of 09:00-17:00 (might be different times, im not sure). So if your neighbor rennovates outside of this you can call the cops :)

Construction in China is really obnoxious. Sometimes, it's pretty impressive, though. When I moved to Shenzhen, I walked around a station called Shangmeilin, and there was nothing there. I visited the area a year later, and now there's this massive mall with a lot of fancy-shmancy buildings near it. (The newness of the buildings makes everything look out-of-place, but impressive, nevertheless.)

I so fucking feel you. Normally that isn´t a big problem where i life (Germany). but some years ago´an old cold war bunker had to go. And because they couldn´t use explosives for safety reasons (Many buildings around), they took the that bunker down with jack hammers, 1/2 year from monday to friday. it was a Nightmare.

An old trick we used in the UK was to set a fire inside of the reinforced bunkers, the expansion of the concrete and rebar would 'pop'' the concrete. Through the concrete in the 30-40's was pretty poor due to shortages and lack of re-bar....

Yes and thats a part of life, i dont understand this whole video complaining about, when my neighbor wanted to build a house next to me i had to put up with the whole construction noise untill it ended, also they say it starts 8:00 am and thats when working hours usually starts even here they start earlier at 6:00 or 6:30 am and so what, when i needed to drill a whole in the wall i did it but not late at night or very early in the morning. This whole noise is just a part of life.

I've heard the occasional jackhammer in my building too, and while the sound is incredibly jarring, I'm pretty sure it's something that noise-cancelling headphones could easily block. But I get by with some homemade (cell foam in cellophane) ear plugs instead. They don't block everything, but soften up the noise a lot. I like living in a building with concrete walls and ceilings though. Feels very safe and sturdy, and apart from sounds travelling through the concrete, most _other_ sounds have to be _really_ loud to travel from one apartment to the next.

I had similar problem actually went ahead and installed soundproofing to one side of my house I used GenieClip technology with using two 12.5mm acoustic plasterboards and 2mm rubber sheet wedged between plasterboards - and gotta say that it stops about 95% if the noise coming from next door. So you loose about 10cm of room space but pretty much gain complete silence. Maybe something like that could help solving issues with the noise?

As an American, the way you two ride your motorcycles drives me crazy, and would NEVER be tolerated in the United States! You keep passing each other, sometimes you ride in tandem, sometimes in the same lane, sometimes you ride on the shoulder that is not designated for traffic and looking like you are exiting, but you're not, you weave in and out of traffic, and even ride in between stopped cars. Not only would the citizens of the United States detest you for driving like that, but the police would not be so keen on it either. There are A LOT of bad riding habits you need to lose if you ever return to the United States.

I think it's not just developing, it's also aside from the new construction they love to renovate. In Spain we are the same so I can totally relate. I had argument with my neighbour too when renovating my place, but he did the same with his place, and then when he was finished someone moved in upstairs and it was their turn, then the government came to replace water mains, dug up the street, repaved it... then the gas company came to replace gas pipes, dug up the same street and repaved it again... :p We should make a noisy country club together with China!! xD

Based on the law, weekday 8 AM - 8 PM is renovation allowed(when most people go for work), you can call the police if there is any violation, all major cities take this issue seriously. I don't know if you are aware of this, or you just neglect it on purpose.

Regarding your noisy upstairs neighbors -- (1) Go to local wet market and buy a couple of kilograms of fish. (2) Puree fish. Mix with 10 litres of water. Add some plaster until mixture looks white. (3) Carry mixture upstairs in a pail. Tell workers that you've been sent to whitewash the walls. (4) Paint walls with fish mixture. Use the entire batch. (5) Leave and wait for fish to rot.

Although I can see your point of view, I think it is tainted due to the fact that you two aren't going to stay in China forever, where these people will probably stay in their apartments until they have grandchildren. Also, you mentioned in other videos how bad China's infrastructure is and in this one too, well, what is the only solution to that? renovations; Improvements! The housing crisis is ongoing and so it seems in all that China is moving forward in that aspect with all these individual renovations plus, if my house was beat up, I'd definitely want to spruce it up. Just in case you read my long block of text I am at the beginning of a pursuit to English degree and teaching cert! You guys convinced this 19 year old, adventure hungry guy to trek the journey!

4 hours is very significant. Dick Chaney had to wait over two years for an organ. The vice president at the time. What are those statistics for the past 15 years? I'm sure they don't match what has been transplanted. In fact, I'm sure this number doesn't match. Regular organ donations barely factor into this equation. It is a cultural thing but that doesn't negate the Falun Gong. How do you explain them?

There are varying numbers but eye witness reports show that Falun Gong have been detained without cause, tortured and harvested for their organs.

This goes to the highest levels of Chinese government. They admit to these deeds and are willing to quash any investigation. Hopefully the rising middle-class will force those people to alternative methods of redecorating Appartment buildings. It wasn't that big of an issue when I was growing up in China, but then again the whole city is practically set on the same clock which renders most of the resistance buildings empty from 0700 to 1800 during the week.
