A Chinese #space #startup launched its first rocket from a marine platform in the Yellow Sea, intensifying a race among local companies attempting to compete with foreign firms such as Elon #Musk’s #SpaceX.
Gravity-1, a mid-sized rocket made by #Beijing-based Orienspace, took off from a ship near the coast of the northeastern city of #Haiyang at 1:30 p.m. local time and sent three satellites into orbit, according to state media.

@@therealG-iz5cv I am a neutral party in this matter but I gotta point out something. Assume every house in USA had their burner on 24/7, it would be the equivalent of launching a rocket every 4.5mins or ~116,800 launches per year. (Thats ~123.6million stoves based on 2020 household count) 😅 Now, let’s be realistic and say average house turns on their stove/oven for 1h/day, that would be the equivalent of 1 launch every 1h42mins, or 5150 launches per year. So you can see why they are coming after your stoves now lol Note: this is assuming everyone has a gas stove. Quick google search shows it’s 47million. So it’s 38% of numbers above. Meaning at minimum ~1957 launches per year to equal number of gas stove consumption per year.

I paused the video clip just right, and I could see that the base of the rocket sits on top of a raised platform, that looks to be about 6-feet higher than the deck. Underneath the raised platform, there seems to be a matrix of large white bags, and each is probably filled with something that absorbs force and can take a lot of heat.

Key Points: This rocket is a solid rocket. Compared to liquid rockets, launch preparation time is very short. It is very helpful for temporary replacement of satellites and mobile launch satellites. For example...if one of the satellites your company uses to broadcast the Super Bowl is destroyed by an enemy during a war. Don't be frustrated, you can relaunch 5 of these satellites (4 spares) on the same day.

This ship-based platform makes the launching of a commercial rocket much more flexible and cheaper as it is mobile and can be done anywhere in the world. All developing countries can launch their own satellites by using this Chinese mobile platform even from their own territorial water. Great China.
