Beijing has issued guidelines for the punishment of so-called Taiwanese “separatists”, threatening to try them in Chinese courts in absentia with criminal penalties up to the death penalty. Joining Taiwan Talks to discuss this are two visiting American scholars from Columbia.

When Sun Yat-sen established the ROC, it did not include Taiwan, which at the time was still Japanese territory

@@lagrangewei Texans voted to join the US, as an independent country. Taiwanese people did not get a say when ROC asked for and got the US to give them Taiwan after WW2. US support for Taiwan is in part US making up for that mistake.

NO OPINION IS FREE OF BIAS, especially opinions of "the west". The 1st speaker is correct and I have written a few times on this issue lately. I graduated law from the University of Singapore and has some expert knowledge. The world recognise People's Republic of China as the sole and onlt China. The Americans have been protecting Taiwan from the legitimate government of China for their interests; to be direct US wants to have their base as a dagger pointed at the heart of China. That was the history of US vs China; however our beloved motherland has grown in power and stature. China has all the time to re-unite with Island of Taiwan by the sheer force of gravity. I believe the whole landscape will turn against the west by Oct. 2024 during the chair of Russia of the BRICS and the SCO. It has been stated by this 1st speaker that further and following the issue of China's extradition orders, China's wanted were arrested and extradited to China to face punishments or be tried. I have said that there is nothing unusual about the process of conducting a trial of an accused person in absentia; such is a normal procedure. The single question is does the country that has requested the extradition recognise China ? If it does and a member country of Inter-Pol, that country has a duty to arrest such wanted person. It has to be guessed that China courts have charged Mr Lai Chin Te with such crimes that could end up with a sentence of death for sedition , rebellion etc. Motherland just need to register Mr Lai Chin Te as a wanted person by China's court. Pose a 2 billion yuan reward and watch Mr Lai's mother sell him out for the reward !

It's easy to imply that the reason why Democratic Taiwan doesn't want be reunited with Communist China is because "the west" is preventing it from happening when in fact it's the Taiwanese themselves who do not want to be placed under "mainland chinese" authoritarian rule. The mere fact that both Taiwan and Mainland China has two opposite political ideology makes them both culturally different and should be considered as such. It's also dangerous to consider that ethnicity can determine a country's territory since Xi made an announcement last year that "All ethnic chinese is part of the 'chinese nation'". By this logic, there is a possibility that Xi can even claim that Singapore as part of "china" as Singapore has a majority of Singaporean nationals who are "ethnically" chinese.

@@huanghermann5207 You're confusing "Nation" with Ethnicity. "Nation" means "Country". Also, Xi is already asking the "Ethnically" chinese to represent the "Chinese Nation" which implies Communist China. So even when these "ethnically chinese" are citizens and nationals of other countries he is already trying to exert control over them.

Nobody can apply entry visa to Taiwan in Chinese embassy . So , China is China and Taiwan is Taiwan . Taiwan is not only a part of China and but also China is not a part of Taiwan . Chinese is Chinese and Taiwanese is Taiwanese . Right !

You are confusing sovereignty with government, as most people do. Bscore HK was handed over to the mainland (government), you couldn't apply for visa to HK. Does it mean that sovereignty of HK was not with China? Certainly not.

Taiwan is an independent country. China has no right to impose policies on Taiwan, especially regarding the death penalty for Taiwanese separatists. People must have the freedom to live without fear of unjust accusations and should have their human rights respected. 台湾是一个独立的国家。中国无权对台湾实施政策，尤其是对台湾分裂主义者的死刑问题。人们必须有自由生活的权利，不应担心不公正的指控，并且应该尊重他们的人权。

there is no "Taiwanguo", the consititution of Taipei does not call Taiwan a country, it call it a province. there was never a peace treaty between PRC and ROC, they are in a state of war, the ROC still occupied territory on the province of Fujian. so Taiwan is the aggressor, they have not withdrawn from the mainland.
