“The Philippine side should have a clear understanding that ganging up with non-regional countries to flex muscle in the South China Sea and instigating confrontation will only aggravate tensions and undermine regional stability. Any attempts to bring in external forces for the sake of one’s own security will only incur greater insecurity and even make one become a pawn. We urge the Philippine side to stop provocation and stirring up trouble at sea, and we urge the relevant countries outside the region to stop instigating confrontation in the South China Sea.”

5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Lin Jian, China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“The current security risks in the region mainly come from individual non-regional powers trying to create exclusive groupings in the Asia-Pacific, instigating confrontations, especially in the South China Sea and stirring up trouble, which look for nothing but chaos. China firmly opposes this. We hope Australia will correctly understand China's development and strategic intentions, abandon Cold War mentality, do more things conducive to maintaining regional peace and stability, and refrain from making an issue of China at every turn.”

7. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Lin Jian, China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“I’m not aware of the specific situation. But in principle, I would like to point out that China is one of the countries in the world with the most resolute position, strongest policy and best record in fighting narcotics, and we are also the one to put the largest number of fentanyl substances in category with strictest controls in the world. China's anti-narcotics authorities have always been rigorous in combating the flow of chemicals used to make drugs and regulate relevant companies’ operations in strict accordance with law.”

11. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Lin Jian, China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“China believes that any conflict should ultimately be resolved through diplomatic channels and political negotiations, and that the way out of the Ukraine crisis can only be found at the negotiating table. According to my understanding, the preparation for the conference is underway, and there is still a lot of work to be done. China is ready to continue to maintain communication with the parties concerned.”

STORYLINE:
China on Wednesday warned the Philippines that resorting to external forces in maritime disputes would only “aggravate tensions” in the South China Sea.
China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian was speaking at a daily news briefing as he commented on the upcoming U.S.-Philippines drills.
The three-week-long drills, dubbed "Balikatan" or "shoulder-to-shoulder" drills, will begin on Monday in areas facing Taiwan and the South China Sea.
The drills came against the backdrop of China’s growing assertiveness in the South China Sea, with increasing faceoffs between Chinese coast guards and Philippines supply ships in waters near the disputed Second Thomas Shoal.
Lin also urged Australia to “understand China's development and strategic intentions.”
