Sometimes you have to return to an earlier point in your horses training to go forward. If they become confused, anxious or overwhelmed, its best to take a step back, work on things they already know well, fix any braces or gaps, then re-approach the problem

Wow. Great display of what and why. This type of a block of instruction. Is welcoming to the uninitiated. Which is me. Other than trail rides. My experience is just beginning. Soaking up what I can. To gain horse sense. I have hopes and aspirations. To get a riding mule.

Thank you for this video. This scenario is all too familiar from trail rides on my appy gelding ( it is soggy country here in Nova Scotia) . Dang tricky to train on a narrow stream/puddle since he jumps it every time! Tried it from the ground and from saddle. From watching your approach to the creek, I think I might possibly need more control (roper halter with low nose band ) to help him understand to take tiny steps to keep his brain in thinking mode rather than flight mode. And did you say MaiNE!!??? That is a short drive from me, so yahooo!!! Can't wait to meet you both. !!! as soon as people stop being stupid. AMEN

Wow well done!! Question tho: You say “this is why it’s done in a halter. “ but I don’t understand… is the halter harsher?

Pat it looks to me like you approached the creek at an angle, rather than straight on (perpendicular). Does that make the horse less likely to jump and more likely to fool around and deal with the bank?

Seems like when I run into a situation like that , it's one of my kids riding and he/she is scared the horse is going to take a big jump and toss them off. The horse is definitely taking advantage of them. Any suggestions for giving kids the tools for dealing with a horse that refuses an obstacle? I know I could get on the horse and school him but I want the kid to learn how to weather the storm.

I'm envious. There's actually water in that creek. Ours is dry for two summers now. Please give us the link where you showed how to tie the mecate onto the halter. Know I saw it but not finding it now. Thanks!

I believe crossing ditches is a depth perception problem. When they trust you they will go quietly. What is your opinion?
