This show is HUGE. I'm barely scratching the surface. As a continuation of yesterday's video, this is just me wondering around saying what I see. We have the new SRAM Eagle stuff, some local bikes from Trigon, and just a bit of everything really.

Very interesting that Chinese brands are promoting the Taiwan - Taipei bicycles trade event. Most Chinese brands are precluded from exhibiting and in some cases, participating in the show. I am even seeing promotions to attract international Taiwan attendees to visit Shenzhen following the show.
@CycOp
@CycOp Жыл бұрын
Maybe because in the past there were too many Taiwanese brands to accept smaller non-Taiwanese brands. But with the current sharp downturn in the bike industry, maybe many smaller brands have gone out of business or opted out of setting up a booth. I know even Giant is extending the payment terms to its suppliers so the smaller players are likely fared worse.

I think what SRAM has done is brilliant. You are using logic from the days of QR technology. Now the axle is integral with the mech. The forces won’t just be hung on a lever through the frame. They will transmit directly to the axel which has a massively resisting moment. Same thing with the tollerancing. If the dropout wasn’t machined perpendicular to the wheel, the through axle wouldn’t be able to thread into the dropout. And even if it was out of tolerance the trough axel would bring it back in once you tighten the threads.
@lekobiashvili945

Shimano introduced the very same concept 20 years ago with the Saint M800 group, but it didn't take off.

If the mech gets hit, the mech will try to "twist" the dropout, and the thru-axle will resist. That's gonna be putting some nasty forces through carbon dropouts tho...
@rockymanbro

@@ChinaCyclingit’s the same resisting force that is going through the axle….. The same thing that is supporting the wheel….. the wheel that gets hurled through the air with a 200lb rider on top. It’s genius if you ask me.
@rockymanbro
@rockymanbro Жыл бұрын
@@ChinaCycling The dropouts should be designed to resist the moment produced by the wheel. Not only is the moment arm of the wheel twice as long, the forces of roosting a berm should be 10x that you could ever produce by impacting the derailleur. That's the brilliance of what they've done here. No one has stopped to rethink this whole system since the death of quick release levers.

I think what people missed is that this move from SRAM deviates from universality. Most complaints people have towards hangers is the non-uniformity between brands and frames and the UDH solved that. With the integrated hanger, SRAM forces bike manufacturers to conform around the brand-specific RD design, which is a step backwards from UDH. Shimano tried this before but with an RD bracket that is replaceable in case of crash damage and people didn't vibe with it, how much more an RD that uses more material, has proprietary design, and puts itself first over the frame.
@galenkehler
@galenkehler Жыл бұрын
No, I think you've missed the fact that the new Sram derailleur uses the UDH mounting pattern on the frame, so it actually solidifies the UDH standard with a dedicated derailleur. Any frame that doesn't use the UDH standard is going to seem antiquated very quickly. But those frames can still use UDH so they're backward compatible with every old derailleur
@avocette
@avocette Жыл бұрын
@@galenkehler but you also missed the fact that SRAM's new schematics and specifications have gotten rid of the frame-integrated protruding stopper that limits the UDH's angular displacement to a finite range and replaces it with the knurled washer to "limit" rotation. Thus, the UDH fitted to the new dropout can rotate rearwards during impact without stopping (which introduces problems).

Watch the 2nd video PT put out today. This SRAM design relies not only on the axle but the dropout also. Personally I think all the carbon bike brands should put out a disclaimer that says if you use this derailleur you will void your warranty.
@avocette
@avocette Жыл бұрын
PT has emphasized that since the axle is a stiff material, it's still gonna transmit most of the forces into the dropouts. Plus, the knurled washer grinding the dropout (therefore reducing DS dropout width and losing thru axle preload) and the pressure towards cheaped-out factories in making better tolerances is still glaringly present.
@paul5683

I wouldn't worry about it. Seems like most mountain bike riders I know buy a new bike every season. A bad crash, the frame should maybe be replaced anyway. As far as maintenance of the derailleur and its fit on the frame. I would think if needed that a shim could easily made out of an aluminum soda can, about .003" to .005 " or a piece of plastic packaging anywhere from. 002" to .02" depending on the fit required.

Oh man that is a lot of speculation about the projected issues with srams new udh, universal derailleur hanger. I dont know much about it at all, so I watched a quick video about the installation, and I've heard the podcast worldwide cyclery did where they cover it. It seems like the axle slides through the dropouts and hanger, providing rigidity to the entire system, allowing for that shift under load. Wouldnt the axle take most of the forces in a crash? Idk im gonna guess this was tested for 4+ years before it was brought to market. Its episode 109 of MTB Podcast in case you think we're all retarded and wrong.
