First time watching and reacting to Chinatown (1974) movie.
The acting is quite impressive. It's no wonder Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway were nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress respectively. Unfortunately, they did not win the Academy Awards.
Best Actor was taken by Art Carney (Harry and Tonto) and Best Actress was taken by Ellen Burstyn (Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore). I wonder if these two movies are a good watch 🤔
On the 2nd watch, you see the clues in the behaviour of the characters. The words they spoke also bring about a different meaning after you know the truth. One thing I noticed is Evelyn Mulwray told half truths to Jake Gittes throughout the movie. It was to divert him from the real truth. A secret she could not bear to let anyone know.

"You're better off not knowing," Gittes says to his client. Well, it's advice he should have taken himself.

The screenplay is considered one of the greatest ever written and is often used as a teaching tool for film students. Repeated viewings always reveal more information and depth and hints and foreshadowings. Evelyn discusses how Hollis was so kind and supportive with taking care of Katharine. He was not having an affair with her, but was acting like a father figure.

The extremely thin eyebrows was a fashion trend in the 1930’s which was especially noticeable in female celebrities of that decade.

Hollis never had an affair with Catherine. I think Evelyn explains he wanted to protect her from Noah. Also note screenwriter Robert Towne's sinisterly poetic name for his villain, Noah Cross or No Across in that he's so powerful and so evil that literally no one can get passed him.
@henryellow

Yup, that's good to know. Unfortunately, Hollis drowned. Noah Cross most likely ordered his assassination due to the "water thing" and also because Hollis was trying to protect Katherine. Noah Cross is too wealthy and too powerful. There's no way Gettis could pin the murder on him. Cross owns the police, anyway...

This is the slickest, coolest, most perfect noir ever. It's a joy to watch every time. And the irony is it was meant as a nostalgia film giving homage to earlier noirs, Bogart and whatnot. But it perfected the form.

One of the details that makes me love this movie is that Gittes, while smart and capable, isn't as smart as either he thinks he is or needs to be in this situation. Plus, he is rash, and that quality helps doom Evelyn Mulwray. It also shows the, at times, futility of good intentions. Just like with Gittes' first Chinatown story, he tried to help and that only made things worse. Also, I love how when they pull Mulwray out, he is missing a shoe. Then, of course, when Gittes' is shot at and sliced up by Polanski at the reservoir, he loses his shoe on the other foot. Such a great movie!

Gittes is great at nailing people with their pants down 😂 Yes, he is smart and capable. But that isn't enough to overcome a wealthy, powerful opponent. You're right, he's rash. A few different decisions could've changed the final outcome. Oh, I didn't realize Mulwray was missing a shoe when he was pulled out. Great attention to detail! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! 😊

The butler in this 1974 movie was the same actor who played grandpa Gong Gong in the recent hit movie 'Everything Everywhere All At Once'.

I am so happy you did research. Brilliant reaction. I've never seen someone spot the Albacore logo so early. In fact, I never noticed that until you pointed it out! I've seen this movie 10,000 times it seems! Every single time I see this movie, I see something new in it. I'm sure you already had that happen to you, when you were editing it! I was a bit worried how this movie would translate to a non-American; even lots of Americans don't know their own history and have a hard time following it! You did an excellent job!

Personal story (yawn)... My bestie (Choo) is from China and she and I *always* eat out at a new (to us) Chinease restaurant. The Bay Area has hundreds to experience - never boring, but sometimes _not_ good. After a bad meal, Choo always says to me: "Forget it, Grant. It's Chinatown."

The movie takes place in 1937. Cars were more common by then. Hollis was absolutely not having an affair with Katherine. That was just the story used by the fake Mrs. Mulwray (on behalf of Noah Cross) to try and find Katherine. The "midget" who slices Gittes' nose was played by Roman Polanski. And Noah Cross was played by the great director, John Huston.

@@henryellowYes, it isn't an easy, formulaic movie and also not easy to react to. Btw, the actor who played Walsh and utters the indelible final line was also in The Birds. He was the patron in the cafe who says something like all birds should be exterminated. Joe Mantell was his name, I think.

There are references constantly that indicate that this is during the 1930’s and society is dealing with the effects of the Great Depression. Also, the clothing and hair styles and models of the cars are clearly from the ‘30’s. Photos were (and still are) developed in large format from negatives like they show, especially for professional uses. 1910 was the Edwardian age when women wore floor length dresses with bustles and corsets and cars were the Model Ts, electricity was rare and California had not yet experienced a population boom (that was more obvious after Hollywood expanded in the 1920’s.)
@anrun
@anrun 8 ай бұрын
The breaking the tail light was indeed to make the car easier to follow. The screenwriter, Robert Towne, was told about that method by an older cop or detective. Btw, the commentary track for Chinatown with Towne and David Fincher is excellent.

I LOVE films with endings like this. Most of all, I love films that have me thinking (consciously or not) "what would **I** do in that situation?" and this film has that in droves. (I actually think one of the big problems with most modern blockbusters is that they are too contrived and over-edited to be relatable, blocking that "what would I do?" vibe.)
@henryellow
@henryellow 8 ай бұрын
Some movies move at a fast pace, so we don't have enough time to consider "what would I do in that situation" before the next scene comes along. It depends on the movie and genre though. Some movies are better fast, while others are better slow. Thanks for sharing! 😊

@@henryellow I'd say even things like Power Rangers still use all the camera tricks, timings etc that are well studied to trigger your brain into deciding reactions. Sometimes conscious, continuously unconscious. If your brain just felt like you were a passive witness, I'm sceptical about whether you'd get the adrenaline of a good action movie, or leave the room during a scary movie. One of the classic 'what would I do?' reactions is flight or fight, not an intellectual thing. There's awesome neuroscience in a similar field. After my degree, at one point I allowed myself to get wired up in transcranial magnetic stimulation at a big London university. They'd do things like shut off my mouth (I couldn't move it) in relation to things I was looking at one screen. What this work into 'mirror neurons' shows is that our body begins to take decisions on how to respond physically before we even decide to consciously. I guess that's already fairly obvious regarding instinctual reactions (jumping to avoid something etc), but it happens almost across the board. Implying that our consciousness might be little more than someone sitting in our back seat pretending we're in charge, as our body drives itself (which isn't great for free will).
@henryellow
@henryellow 8 ай бұрын
Do you mean that they "shut off your mouth" using magnetic stimulation to your brain 😯? That's crazy.
@henryellow
@henryellow 8 ай бұрын
Of course the consciousness isn't just a passive observer with no control over the body (that would be like a mental prison). We make plenty of conscious decisions every day.

One hears a lot abiut the screenplay to Chinatown. It almost like the screenplay should have been published in blom form. It apparently did not need a movie to bring it to life. What nonsense. The screenplay and the cinematography and sound design were all tools for the director in creating a,movie. Just like it is nonsense to state that the story needed only a living cast of any humans to simply speak the lines as written; This movie is the product of Roman Polanski. He used giftsd actors and craftsmen to bring his vision to life. A screenplay is a jumping off point. And Polanski worked with Towne in rewriting portions of the screenplay to improve it for the film. As he worked with cameramen and actors and all the crew. Chinatown is the product and vision of Roman Polanski.

Gee Henry you really are picking some great films. Another great reaction, thankyou. I live in Australia however I have become addicted to following the political news from the U.S. over the last 10 years or so. Your comments at the end of the film caused me to feel much of Donald Trumps story reminds me of this type of phenomena. Even though in my assesment Noah Cross is far more intellegent than DT. The same tropes of a selfish, dishonest immoral sexual predator with wealth and power continueing his grab for more wealth, power and control over others unchecked and unstoppable unfortunatly accompany Trump. Seemingly rewarded for his corruption and indiscretions somehow managing to always fail upwards. I am sure we have examples of this in Australia as well but Trump in my opinion is the most widly known example of this type of creature, at least here in Australia he is. It's a sad story but reveals a reality we are best not to ignor if we hope to push back against this type of person. Thanks again Henry, see ya next time mate!
