The piano accompanist is doing an exceptional job of listening to her and timing each note for optimizing the effect. I see this as her speaking to her former "puppet master" and she's cutting off the fingers that pull the marionette strings. Her control over her vocals is exquisite. To me, it's not so much as a song about 'revenge' as it is a reaffirmation to *herself* that no one will be able to put their hands on her again, and if they try, she'll have "her keys in her knuckles" like *she* has to. It's not 'I will hurt you like you hurt me', instead it's 'I will never let you hurt anyone, including me, again..so just don't try'. If her abuser doesn't abuse, she'll let it go..but, if they abuse again..Heaven hath no fury.

I commented similar elsewhere, but since you invited discussion I'll put it here too. 🙂 I agree there is at least an element of revenge in these lyrics and performance, but I don't think it's the main theme. I think this is a song about agency. It expresses some of the rage we feel when someone misuses theirs to control or undermine ours. It's a fundamental human experience that can only go so far before the primal urge for survival kicks in. If the recipient has just enough sense of self to reject the attempted cannibalism of their own will, the conflict becomes a "them or me" battle. Survival of the fittest demands one step up and commit to neutralising an existential threat first and then possibly indulge some revenge later if you still want to. I really love the symbolism of Chincilla's performance claws in this particular song. We use our hands to do or facilitate almost everything a human does! They are one of the foremost tools of our individual agency in the world. Obviously cutting her abuser's fingers off will leave them pretty much impotent while her own freedom and agency are now healed and intact. The underpinning visual is of the fingers which allow her to utilise those qualities in her expression, celebrated on display with every available adornment!

Again love the honesty. I personally feel connected to her lyrics as empowerment. Not to hurt anyone but more like I know I’m worth it so don’t even try to mess with me that way. (Past abusive relationships so there’s that). Though I believe she is actually referring more to her break off from the label at the time. This song actually took me a few times to warm up to. I find that many songs I end up really liking long term are often ones that don’t resonate at first blush.

Chinchilla is a great producer and her "studio" tracks are fun but my favorite Chinchilla performances are those where production is minimal and we can experience the power and control of her voice.

You look absolutely mesmerized by the end. This is more about getting away from the trash people. It’s not revenge.

I don't know her background, but I think it is a great metaphor. Nobody knows a domestic abuser usually better than the victim, and the abuser aims to remove that power from their target immediately. Sadly, this disempowerment through mental and physical abuse shames and even normalises the victims experiences. Here, she is recovering her power and she is removing the fingers one by one. Each time he takes takes a tactically swipe, she is learning how to disarm it. She doesn't need a knife to remove his arsenal, she is her own armoury. This 'man' is nothing without his control on her.

Personally I don’t see it as revenge; rather it’s more about her own redemption. She’s not the same broken person that this person remembers- from the sounds of it ,and from personal experience, a narcissist with control issues. I think she is metaphorically cutting off their fingers by cutting off her response to them ( caving in to their manipulation) and, for the above described person, that means cutting off 1) attention and 2) responding to their behavior. Even though she APPEARS to be the same, meets in the “ same/ favorite spot” she will not only allow for this person to pull HER under, she makes sure that they KNOW that she won’t let OTHERS be subjected to what they put her through. As a woman we are VERY familiar with keeping your keys in your fingers and looking behind ourselves, period. Karma won’t be from Chinchilla- she’s grown and moved forward- but it WILL come, so maybe they should think twice before they do the same thing to anyone else.

Izzy, I think it’s more about physical abuse, or maybe an attack. I think that’s something a majority of men struggle to find relatable. A majority of women can relate to it all too well. 😶❤️

Consider giving it another listen and watch, imagine a woman having been abused/SA’d, that’s what this is about. She’s just taking her power back. I think 99% of women feel this one to their core, it’s harder for men to get, especially if you’ve not been around such abuse. I’ve spent my life walking with my keys in my knuckles to protect myself, were at an immediate physical disadvantage, there much more depth to just that one line that what you first hear. 🫶🏼
