Great video! Though, I do recommend removing the plastic wheel. It is too small for their backs which will cause arching, and the plastic will get chewed on. Plastic pieces can cause impactions and damage to their internal organs. I've seen a few necropsies of chinchillas with plastic pieces in their stomach and intestines. It is really harmful to them. The Chin Spin is an all metal wheel made from Quality cages, I recommend that wheel.

Female chinchillas are basically elephant matriarchs trapped in the body of fluffy kangaroo-squirrel-mice.

Are Chinchilla's a nice pet, or would you advise against it?

MrNicoJac I have read that chinchillas CAN be good pets for the right people, but there is work and $ involved in getting the proper enclosure and supplies/vet care and spending time with them. they do need an experienced exotics veteran for annual checkups, and an owner that is knowledgeable about their special diet, hygiene routine, and handling. some states require that you go to your regional office to get a permit to own one (example: if I were to get a chin, I would have to go to a different town in a different county to file paperwork in order to own one. same rule with sugar gliders, domesticated skunks, hedgehogs, and other exotics like a fennec fox. research everything first, because some regions/states or countries may say it is illegal to own one. depends on your location.) adopt, don't shop! exotics often end up homeless just as often as dogs and cats, so look for a specialized rescue in the surrounding areas :)

MrNicoJac They're great pets for the right people. I have six ranging in age from nine to seventeen. They're very long lived, and they need very large cages. The majority of their diet is hay, and you have to make sure you're giving them the right kinds of hay and food (there are rules as to what kind of hay you should give based on what kind of food you're giving). They can also be very messy, so building or buying the right cage can make a huge difference. For example, big open barred cages like the ones in the video can be very messy. Most people are happier with shelf guards and such to keep any hay and flying poop in the cage rather than on the floor. I love my chins, but they're not for everyone.

Hi MrNIcoJac. I agree with previous posters about them not being for everyone. They are not "easy" pets and they often don't live up to people's hopes and expectations. If you can love an animal as they are with zero expectations, offer them consistent, safe play time, provide a chinchilla companion as well as a large cage, good vet care, etc. etc. for their entire life span of 20 years? Maybe they're for you. They ARE for me, but there are few folks I recommend them for. Hope that helps.

Animal Dude Those cages are actually pretty small for chinchillas. I’d recommend a double critter nation which is at least twice the size of hers.

Actually cages are supposed to be up to 5 feet tall. Meaning those are quite small. Mine is 5’5 tall for just my on chinchilla

Late to the game, but what do you people recommend for a new chinchilla owner? I just got one, want to get a friend for it because I want it to be happier. I can split my cage into two as it's a two-level, this would eliminate having to buy another cage which would be empty once they're living together. The chin is a 3 yo female. What do you think?

Hiya :) hold old are these chins? I’m hoping to introduce a new girl to my pair of girls. The pair are aged 5 yrs and 7mnths respectively, and we think the other female is around 8-10. She has been with another female previously but she unfortunately passed away. I’m going at it incredibly open mindedly and not getting my hopes up, as I’ve heard mixed stories about the success of bonding three chins. Any insight from you would be fab! :)

How ? We adopted an older chin petunia cuz she was lonely. She's super friendly by are baby furby girls furby and bou aren't getting along with her . We cleaned their big cage out and put tons of new toys, remodeled everything . Furby was fine (she use to spray petunia) but bou got all crazy . I'm so sad I really want them all to get along.

Is Pebbles sleeping in the dustbath? Also, where's Cheerio's dustbath? Do you let them run around outside of their cages each day for exercise? I miss my chinchilla.

So chinchillas, most of them, live alone? They never seem to get along from what I’m seeing. I someone gain an interest in guides pigs, chinchillas, and cherry head tortoise. I was very close to getting a tortoise and decided to hold off. I’ve done plenty of research on guinea pigs and cherry head tortoises

You need to put them in a carrier together and go for a lengthy car ride. Idk why but it works every time. These gradual introductions will make them hate each other. Please stop now. The bond needs to be instant. Car ride is fool proof just make sure its at least an hour and small enough cage.

They are not "Rats" They may share the same Order: Rodentia, but their diets are faaaaar more different from a rats. Hell, even rats have different diets depending on the region you get them from.
