Much of the architecture residing in the historic village dates back to the Song Dynasty from the 11th century while many additional buildings were added during subsequent dynasties. In 1131, it was home to members of the Wang clan with 13 houses of traditional build at the start. It wasn’t until the Ming and Qing dynasties between the 14th and 20th centuries that the village began to flourish as a major trading center. Many buildings built in the past are still intact today. When one imagines ancient China, the image of Hongcun village is typically the China that is brought to mind, with architectural styles reminiscent of the Hui style. A quiet and peaceful place, Hongcun was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2000. Additionally, many scenes from the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon were filmed on location in Hongcun.

宏村的设计很有特色，整个村子像是一头牛的形状，村西是牛头，进村的石桥是牛嘴，石桥东首的两棵大树是牛犄角，村中的月沼，是牛的胃，家家户户门前有水圳相连通，这如同牛肠。所有的水最终都汇集到南湖，是牛肚子。
