During the 80s, I was shouted at to go home to Japan although I am Chinese Malaysian. As far as I am concerned, the West has always been like that. Chinese Exclusion Act, followed by Japanese Internment camps, then Japan bashing and now, China bashing. Bashing Asians is the most convenient method deployed by politicians to distract from actual problems. You just have to accept and endure if you want to live there.

This is what happens when you are fed the 'go to the West and life will be better' all your life. Many middle class China immigrants in the West would be well to do in China with their talent and intelligence, but instead they choose a life of being second class citizens in the West. My friends mom did her undergraduate in Peking University, the best university in China, for which admission is more competitive than Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, etc. When she went to the USA with her husband, no one recognized her degree, and she had to do another degree just to find a job. She now lives a middle class life in the USA, despite the fact that she would've been fast-tracked up the corporate ladder by any Chinese company in Shanghai with her Peking University degree. There is a lot of opportunity and prosperity in China right now- I would suggest to all my Chinese counterparts to know your worth and stay where your talent will be recognized and appreciated, rather than become second class citizens of mediocre Western countries.

I am a Chinese Malaysian. Been told to go back China since I started school. Here in country, I am a tax payer. Don't see a problem with China asking those whom they see as trouble makers to go back. Went to Poland for a vacation recently, someone asking donation for Ukraine. I said No, why should I, a Chinese donate when US & EU are stabbing China in the back?

Canada, the country that I have loved so much, has become so shameful in the last ten years, almost unrecognizable ☹️

I met a Chinese-Canadian friend in London in early 2020 before the outbreak announcement. At that time, he told me that European people considered him as Chinese although he was born and raised in Canada. He was not welcomed and treated unfair due to the deep National conflict between the Hong Kong and the Chinese. So it’s not the new problem but just being exacerbated.

To be honest this harassment is great news for many reasons . 1. True colors of people / government will be displayed . 2. Builds solidarity to those who are ostracized. 3. Whist china brings the east into the new century, these western nations will be the dumping grounds for the feeble minded and their ilk. 4. Helps those who suffer realize they will never be a part of mainstream society and a great lesson to be passed on to future generations . Once a minority , always a minority unless you reconnect with your motherland ( who will be the majority in the future ). This will prevent cultural genocide .

I am Filipino living in Toronto, I am always mistaken as Chinese. During the Covid lockdown i was harassed at least 2x on the street with anti-Chinese slurs. I have to always emphasize that I am Filipino. Anti-China sentiments has been strong since Covid and geopolitical conflict with the west and China. Many Asian (not necessarily Chinese) and being physically attacked, especially in the US. I honestly felt unsafe going out because of this. Canadians are generally, tolerant but we have at least 20% of the population that are ultra-nationalist or leaning towards far-right ideology. Definitely an interesting time to live in.

Canada is a great country but sadly it’s tied too close to the US and sometimes acts in a way that sacrifices its own national interest

Japan almost surpassed US economy in the 80s, and then the anti-japanese trend came, portraying Japan as a threat. Japanese people living in the West suddenly became the target of racism. Japan was militarily dependent on the US, and they were afraid that a war could break-out if their economy surpassed the US economy, that's why they decided to slowdown their economy in order to avoid that fate. Unlike Japan, China is also a military powerhouse, so it's not afraid of what the US could do even if they want war, because the americans know very well that China surpassing the USA in literally EVERYTHING is just a matter of time.

I would imagine many of those Chinese Canadians were among those who fled Hong Kong with their wealth when it reverted to China. I also read many have found the grass was not greener on the other side and returned to HK. Just like its neighbour, Canada has an appalling history of mistreating its native population, so it is not surprising it is treating Chinese people in a similar manner. Despite its record, in typical hypocritical fashion, it is always among the first countries to lecture other countries like China on the virtues of law and democracy. It is ironic that Caucasian Canadians tell Chinese Canadians to go home when their forebears all came from Europe. Having said all that, thanks to the rise of China, its increasing living standards and modern infrastructure, Chinese people need no longer have to look for "greener" pastures abroad, if by 'greener", it means sub-Arctic conditions and hostile environment.

That is why you never turn against your mother country, especially if you live in any anglo saxon nation.

It's sad. I'm an overseas Chinese and it's so unfortunate this happens. I'm reminded of the second world war, the Japanese were also targeted, but they had it much worse. However if Canada and China were to have a hot war, then yes the treatment of immigrant Chinese people could degenerate even more, hopefully it wouldn't be as bad as the treatment endured by the Japanese but all around it's still awful

As a retired Canadian expatriate living in Thailand, I am embarrassed at the racism, both overt and covert, in Canada. The "Great White North" is not as tolerant as it portrays itself. Shame on her! For me, newcomers are always welcomed to Canada. Most seek a new life from totalitarian and oppressive regimes. Others come for a better financial life for themselves and a better future for their children. Whatever the reason, newcomers to Canada bring hope and vitality. So welcome, newcomers to Canada. I hope all your dreams come true.

It’s at times like this when I feel a deep sense of shame at the behaviour and attitude of some of my fellow human beings. I think that in most cases the origin of this type of prejudice is fear, and fearful people are irrational and dangerous people. If they would only ask themselves: if this were done to me, or one of my loved ones,how would I feel?

Canada, like most Americas, Australia and New Zealand, does not belongs to the White Caucasian who themselves had migrated from white Europe two centuries ago, and therefore, only the indigenous native Canadian Indians who had settled from China 5 centuries ago have the rights to claim Canada as their homeland.

It's sad that this continues to happen, that people act out a result of political nonsense. It got worse after Tr*mp's tirade and like puppets citizens lapped it up and what big brother does, C*nada always finds a way to follow suit although be it usually on a lesser scale. Sad reality is, this happens everywhere, no one is immune to it, some places don't go to the extent of others but it still happens. My 1st trip to China myself and wife were in Shanghai on the river cruise, I was on the rail enjoying the sites for more than a few minutes however a local a few feet away said "I hate wht people, why won't he move", I guess I was supposed to move so she could take a picture of her friend in that spot, when I looked over her friend was embarrassed thinking that I understood what she said. Another trip (yeah, boats lol) we were on a raft cruise on a river in the mountains, the guide controlling the boat said "he must be a criminal in his own country that can't find work, that's why he's in China, he should go back". My point, it shouldn't, but this happens everywhere, I can only say, be thankful that there's a robust population of Chinese in C*nada that can act as support systems, here in southern BC I am the minority which is great, I prefer doing business with Chinese, much nicer people to deal with. In China, other than my wife, I have next to no support system (thankfully the wife's sisters husband is a cop, that helps :-). I revert back to that old saying "can't we all just get along", cheers.

During my 20 years in China, I have experienced this twice, I've been called 'white skin trash', I've been threatened with violence. It's not a big deal, most Chinese people, and Canadian people, and American people are very nice, very friendly, very polite. Only a tiny, tiny minority will say these hateful things. Certainly, it hasn't made me think Chinese people are particularly racist.
