The Cultural Revolution in China: the boy who denounced his mother
Subscribe to The Guardian on KZfaq ► is.gd/subscribeguardian
In 1970, Fang Zhongmou, a doctor in the eastern Chinese province of Anhui, was charged as a counter-revolutionary and executed. What makes the case unusual is that she was killed after being denounced by her teenage son, Zhang Hongbing. Zhang, 60, describes his role in his mother's death, which he now bitterly regrets, but is publicising to highlight the 'catastrophe' of the 1966-76 Chinese Cultural Revolution.

some people don't deserve to speak. all nations people should head ALL to one goal. no many very different ideologies nor to many different seperet classes of people. history has proven it in poland and ukraine that fascism has no place on earth. but capitalism allows its very existanse and many other things that all together creates the riots. dictators like hitler are good only to die.but others like mao are simply doing what they have to far a fully united nation. if mao's revolution never hapend it would mean that china would be like most other nations:filled with riot and disagreements but as it is now there are no riots at all and the disagreement of people among them is rare. in short:every great dictator HAS to do such brutal actions for the good of the country.even how much he wants to avoid it but no matter how they try unfortunatly for them,if they are to fully make the people of the nation unified they must do it.its painful for them and the rest of us but it is the only way.

@@fotppd1475 I agree the opinions that some people should count less significance in the media. There is censor of speech in china. I have to admit that many people in china are quite unwise, at least they will be easily affected and join riots, which can be as small as a bulling or collective insulting (really common, witnessed in entertainment domains). There is no way for treating cute irritability of people, except censoring. And the education system is not aimed at promoting wistom, instead, it promotes GDP. sad

legal canada he’s using “corruption” as an excuse to gain control of the party and is using Mao era tactics to silence the population against making jokes or mocking him. He’s just closing China off to the world, enslaving third world countries in the “one belt one road” initiative by creating debt traps, taking away Hong Kong’s freedom by imposing a law that silences opposition, creating a nationwide social credit system based on loyalty to the party and launching a cultural genocide against the uigher minority in Xinjiang. He hasn’t improved anything, he’s making his rich buddies richer in first tier cities while people in the countryside are getting poorer. He’s basically crashed the world economy and China’s with the coronavirus coverup. He hasn’t done jackshit other than seizing power. You’re also forgetting that Mao and the party created the poverty that they are “helping people get out of”.

I think he was brave and very humble to admit that he was wrong. Initially I was surprised by the comment about after 43 years, but I wonder what he in fact meant. He was speaking in Chinese, this was translated, and who knows what he was actually thinking in that moment. Perhaps he had long ago repented about what he had done, but continued to reflect on it, and continued to feel the same way. It's difficult to know. What is important is his feeling of repentance. What is also important is to recognize the collective madness of that time which affected millions of people. Would we behave better under circumstances that favoured fanaticism? Another thing to remember is that Mao specifically concentrated on the young: many Red Guards were teenagers. He probably thought they would be easier to manipulate than mature adults.

Every totalitarian regime has its Zhang Hongbing and Pavlik Morozov. The latter was held up as a model Soviet citizen, who as a 13 year old, denounced his father during Stalin's rule. Pavlik's father, like Zhang's mother, was shot. This is the great evil that prioritises duty to the state over filial obligations. Today, I read about Russian school children who dobbed in their teachers who spoke out against the war in Ukraine. Presumably, they have not heard about Zhang or Morozov.

Smh...Russia? Zelensky outlawed all political parties except his own. He jailed the leaders of the political opposition and seized their assets. He seized privately owned media and TV stations and shutdown those critical of him and his party. He seized many church property and assets while making it illegal for those congregations to worship. His govt has jailed reporters and journalists with many of those dying in prison. Zelensky made it illegal for ethnic Russians in Ukraine to teach their children Russian language and history. This list goes on and on. The West has become far more authoritarian and oppressive and has no room to judge anyone else.

You reported your own mother for taking down Mao's picture, so don't expect pity from me. Did Mao raise you, have you in birth, change your diapers, breastfeed you, care for you, hold you, teach you, etc? No. Yet you reported her knowing the consequences.
@enricmm85
@enricmm85 4 жыл бұрын
Hadn't they reported her someone would have eventually realized that the mandatory Mao picture was missing from their home and then the whole family would have probably been executed. By the time she had already burned Mao's picture things were setteled. It was either her or the entire family. That is why the father went to the police with his teenage so to denounce her: to save the son's life.

Exactly. Deng Xiaoping邓小平’s daughter Deng Rong (邓榕) denounced “Deng Xiaoping is evil” (April 1967). On Aug. 5, 1966, she beat Biàn Zhòngyún (卞仲耘), a vice president in her high school, to death. But after Mao and Her father got power Deng Rong (邓榕) denounced that “Mao is evil” and in her book it reads “ My father is a kind of very nice and great man”. Now she is a Billionaires. Mao’s daughter is too poor to have money to visit a doctor.
