The aim of this video is to give some knowledge and hints for a DIY diesel heater install in a motorhome or a caravan.
Before you start there are a number of considerations.
1. The environment in which you operate. Do you plan trips during a mild Queensland (Australia) winter, or do you travel during the freezing cold of a north Canadian winter.
2. What sort of insulation do you have in your motorhome or caravan.
3. What fuel delivery system will you have? Use the main fuel tank or use a separate fuel tank.
4. What is your power storage capacity? How long do you wish to run the heater? These heaters require amps to both start and run. At a high setting these heaters will draw 3 amps per hour or 72 AH a day. Do you have the battery capacity to run the heater?
5. What size heater? What size can you fit? Be aware many proponents of these heaters state you should get a smaller heater and run it hard to prevent carbon buildup. I have the opposite opinion as you will see from previous videos. My view is it is better to have a bigger heater running slower. Less noise, less fuel consumption and less current draw. Then every month or so, depending on use, run full power for 30 mins to burn off any carbon deposits. If your install is gold standard you will have minimal carbon deposits during use.
6. Be aware that all three heaters shown here have the same fan motor, the same dosing pump, the same glow plug, the same controllers and ECU, giving you the same current draw for the same Hz setting (power setting). This means the 2 Kw heater runs flat out to provide its max output of 2 KW, and consumes approx 3 amps per hour, and approx 400 ml of diesel per hour.
The 5 Kw heater runs half speed to produce 2 KW, uses approx half the diesel and has half the current draw.
Warm travels. JMcK

A silicone baking sheet used for cooking makes a good gasket for between the metal base plate and floor. It not only makes a good seal but is a heat barrier too. Can use the baseplate as a template for cutting the baking sheet to the right shape. No messy silicon grease or sealant required then. Great videos John, you have taught me so much about these heaters thanks.

This is my second time watching the series (taking notes this time) and I have to tell you how great your videos are. SO informative! Now I watch other install videos and cringe when I see them using soft fuel line or mounting their pump straight and so on. Thanks for all the valuable information. Now I just have to wait for the snow to melt to measure my RV. It's so helpful to be armed with an understanding of what I need to do. Thanks again!

_Nicely done! In the last few installs, I have used a metal square electrical box to help make a so-called turret for more protection! I also use a header wrap to cut back on the exhaust pipe heat! For my own, I also place two cooling fans with a heat sensor to keep the body cooler for a faster cooldown. It also had an extra bonus of maintaining the flux of temperature with much more control in a small area by a happy accident._

The one I bought from Amazon for $175 was awesome and extremely efficient. I installed it inside my conversion van and exhausted under the vehicle to maximize heat absorption. I have two each of CO sensors smoke detectors and they've never been triggered. Despite Northeast winters, I rarely needed to run it higher than the lowest setting.

Hi James Thanks for your feedback. The polyurethane foam I have dealt with in over 50 years in Australia, NZ, and some Med countries absorbs water like a sponge. In my early working life I have done business with factories with cold room roofs had to be replaced as they were dangerously sagging due to water absorption into the polyurethane insulation causing poor insulation and massive weight gain. I have much experience with major boat problems where pour in place polyurethane was used for buoyancy, but did the exact opposite. German built Bavaria yachts have refrigeration issues after a few years due to water absorption into the polyurethane foam. In my own 1999 Bavaria 46 foot sailboat we had cooling issues until I drilled holes in the bottom of the cold box and drained out more than 2 litres of water. In Australia now, no one in their right mind uses polyurethane foam for insulation purposes, unless well sealed against moisture vapour absorption. Perhaps we are talking about different products. Cheers. JMcK

Here in the states, vehicle manufacturers (car, van or camper) don't make any provisions for installation of these heaters. If you want one installed, it's a diy type of thing. I love these little buggers, they have worked great with no issues for me for several years.

Hi Nick, the heater fan works well providing there are minimum restrictions (no tight turns). In boats it is not uncommon to have 8 m of ducting with no issues. You can also add to existing ducting in many cases. Yes, sometimes a computer fan at the duct outlet can be helpful. But try it first without the fan. JMcK

That question is very dependent on the Hz (heat setting) you choose. These heaters require around 8 to 10 amps for a short time to start up and shut down, but only one to two amps to run. So from a low setting to a high heat setting you can double the current draw and half the battery run time. Your Litinum battery could run your heater from 40 to 80 hours. However one thing you must be aware is Litinum batteries hold a very flat voltage and then shut off suddenly. The low voltage shutdown procedure in these heaters does not work well here and you could have an overheat issue if the battery shuts off and the heater can’t do its shutdown cycle. JMcK

Thank you, John, for this entire series of videos. I especially appreciate the warnings and best-practice tips, which should save so many of us so many headaches. Your videos have pointed out the benefits of running a larger heater at lower power, to generate the same heat output as the smaller unit running at high power, saving both power and noise. Because I'm planning a small Promaster van camper, I'm wondering if I would even need to run that small unit at the high setting. Did I miss a temperature and noise output comparison between the 2 and 5 kw units? I've seen comments from van folks with the 5 kw units indicating that even the lowest setting was too hot for them, and I was leaning toward installing the smaller unit until I watched your videos.Thanks again for your great contributions!

Hi Jenifer, The size of heater you need comes with a lot of variables such as the size of your van, your insulation, how many windows, window coverings, the environment you operate the van etc. In general, if you have a small van, a small heater will be fine. However when you do your install just make sure there is room to swap heaters if necessary. The cutout, the pipes, the fuel run etc are the same, regardless of the heater. It is easy to swap out one heater for a bigger, or smaller one if necessary. These Chinese copy heaters are very cheat. ($100 or so) You are not spending thousands of dollars for a genuine brand name heater. JMcK

As all have said, fantastic video series. One question that has popped up since we (my son Joshua and I) installed a 2kW under our sprinter seats. We see you using Epoxy and silicon for sealing around the areas where the exhaust pipe will be exiting. The heat in that exhaust was enough to melt some plastic in one of the Sprinter installs. Do you concern yourself with the exhaust pipe being too hot and what temp is the silicon and epoxy you used in this Motor Coach rated at?

On the rectangular mounting plate; the slot ending in a hole is for routing the pump wire if the pump is outside ( should usually be). I'm not sure how you are routing your pump wire but it would seem to require an additional hole big enough for the connector ( unfavorable in my opinion). I suppose it could be used for supplying fuel from the inside but that is not the design intent.

Nice series, I've learned a lot and I thank you for that. I'm putting one in my travel trailer in place of the propane furnace. Question for you. Can I run the ECU outside of the main shell of the unit? I believe that will protect it from over heating in the event I lose battery power.
@johnmck1147
@johnmck1147 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Seppo, If you are an enthusiast I guess it is possible, but it would not be that easy. Eg, There is a sensor for the fan pick up magnets mounted on the ECU circuit board that would have to be unsoldered from the board, some secure bracket made and cables soldered to the sensor and led back to the the external ECU. Anyway, is it really worth all that effort. The ECU will shut down the heater on detecting a low voltage. The danger is if you totally cut power to the heater, then the heater can not do its cool down cycle and you can damage the ECU. With a good install the chances of cooking the ECU are remote. But if you do, a spare can be bought on line quite cheaply. JMcK

A great way to not waste my time...im in the middle of installing a heater myself.....i cut t hru the floor and going to tap into the fuel pump.....is it ok to install the filter and heater pump about 6-7 ft away from the fuel tank...it not what is the farthest that i should install them....thanks for all of these great vids.....will keep looking at all of your stuff......blessings
@johnmck1147
@johnmck1147 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Pensolarcrte, These fuel pumps are much better at “pushing” rather than “sucking” fuel. You should try and have the filter and pump as close to the heater as you can. The actual maximum distance of fuel tank to pump is dependant on the height of the fuel tank, and age of the pump. As pumps wear they are less efficient. If the fuel tank is level or above the pump, 2 meters away should give you no issues. JMcK

Love your videos Im a little confused about your comments on insulation. Im a home builder and feel I have a fair bit of knowledge about insulation. Expanded polystyrene is only waterproof if is higher density. Structural panels like the floor and wall of that motorhome is expanded polystyrene. house structural panels ( ive built hundreds of homes with) almost never use dense enough foam to be waterproof they hold water they can and will dry out as long as the sheathing has a perm rating.closed cell Polyurethane we comonly use that we use is in floor slab insulation is 100% waterproof. Only open cell will hold water.

G'day John! I'm in the process of installing a 5kw heater in my caravan and have watched your videos numerous times and taking lots of screenshots etc so thank you for taking the time to video the whole process 👍 Quick question - when using the removable plate method, if I need to service it or replace gaskets etc, is this possible without having to remove the heater? I'm concerned about screwing the plate down into the floor again and not getting the screws to bite in as well as the first time. I'm going through a heat resistant board that's silicone'd to the floor itself.
@johnmck1147
@johnmck1147 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, pleased you liked the videos. The removable plate method just makes heater removal easier if the floor is thick and hence harder to get at the clamps and bolts underneath. But fixed plate method is also ok. If your install is gold standard with minimal restrictions in the exhaust and combustion air inlet, and at end of season you run a kerro/diesel mix for 15 mins or so, you will rarely need to service the heater. Our heater on the boat still does not need a service after 10 years of shoulder season use, and as it draws from the boat diesel tank it does not get a kerro flush, just 15 minutes of high Hz running at sailing season end to burn off any carbon deposits. Ref re screwing the plate down, if the screws don't bite the second time just use the old bit of matchstick in the hole trick, perhaps glued in with a bit of epoxy. Works every time. JMcK

Hi John. Thanks for all your videos. I am going to put a diesel heater in a 2010 Jayco Swan Outback. I hope to use the jerry can holder on the back and fit a 20l yellow plastic diesel container. I have ordered a stand pipe to fit in the top of this. Just wondering if it is ok to use the black fuel hose from that to the pump? The fuel container will be higher than the pump. I assume that is fine? Regards, Nick
@johnmck1147
@johnmck1147 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Nick, Standard black fuel hose is fine from tank to shut off valve, to filter to pump. From pump to heater it is best to only use narrow bore hard nylon fuel hose. As the tank is higher than the pump it is best to install a shut off valve in the line before the pump to stop leakage of fuel through the pump from head pressure when the heater is not working. Just shut the valve off when heater not in use. Cheers. JMcK

Hello John, hope you are well, now you have helped me enormously before and i thank you for that , but now i need your help again, i have just purchased a second hand caravan with a diesel heater already installed. It is installed correctly, it starts and runs with no error codes and is not blowing any smoke but it does not get very hot, when you place your hand at the outlet it is only blowing warm air, whereas in my old caravan , you cannot leave your hand at the outlet because it is so hot. I do not have a thermometer , so i cannot tell you the temperature at the outlet Can you please advise what the possible problem may be, thanks again, Grant

Hi Landaus, smell is objective. But with a good install these heaters burn very clean, and I personally can not smell any exhaust at close distance once the heater is up to temperature. Sometimes you can get a slight diesel smell on start up, but that disappears when the burner gets hot. JMcK

I've watched the whole series and found it to be very informative. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I have a question though: Have you ever had to connect these units up without a wiring loom? The supplier I bought the heater from neglected to supply a wiring loom and now I'm stuck with all the components of the heater but no loom. To make things worse, the wiring diagram in the "manual" has different connectors to what was supplied in the package.Long story short, can it be connected without the loom? I'm happy to make my own, I just don't know what to connect where.

Hi Mr W, First, If you bought the heater on line ask for a replacement. Depending on your country of origin you have comeback here, both statuary and from PayPal, eBay etc. Second, if you have technical knowledge you could make your own wire harness but it would not be easy. You would have to source the different plugs etc, and get the wires correct. You are right about common published wire diagrams, they are often wrong, or not for the common Chinese heaters. If you can't get a loom from the heater supplier suggest you buy one on line. They sell from A$15 to A$20, and include all the plugs. Below is just one link to get you started in your search. Look at this on eBay For Diesel Air Heater Split Unit Power Supply Cable Harness Wire Plug Cheers. JMcK

Hey John. Great video series its exceptionally helpful thanks. Can I ask what is the main purpose of the sealing ring/plate/gasket/silicone? Is it to prevent carbon monoxide from the exhaust seeping back into the home? To prevent cold air and draughts? To prevent water from seeping into the wood? As heat protection for the floor? I might need to make some compromises with my install and knowing the exact purpose would help with my decision making. Thanks again.

Hi Evan, in Aus these are called rain gutter down pipe pops or connectors. They connect the down pipe to the rain gutter. Available in round or square, you could use either. You would buy them from a plumbing or hardware store. I bought mine from Bunnings, cost $2 to $3 each. You should also be able to buy them from an on line store. If you can't buy them in your country you could bend up some thin flat steel plate into a round or square shape and just tack weld to the mounting plate. JMcK

Hi John, Is there a minimum clearance that these heaters need around the outside of their housing?
@johnmck1147
@johnmck1147 3 жыл бұрын
Hi David, In normal operation the case remains quite cool and does not need much of an air gap. With the "All in one" heaters the heater has only mm spacing from the metal case. In "normal" operation a space gap of, say, 12 mm would be ok. But plan for the worst. If the heater is switched off accidentally from power and not allowed to go through its cool down cycle, it will get quite hot, hot enough to melt the ECB inside the heater. Use common sense here. If you have a non flammable compartment with metal walls you can have less space than a compartment with flammable timber walls. A heater mounted outside in a metal case perhaps 10mm or 12 mm clearance would be just fine. But a heater mounted inside in a wooden cupboard, perhaps 75mm to 100mm clearance would be more prudent. Cheers. JMcK

@johnmck1147
@johnmck1147 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, If your install is gold standard, with minimum restrictions in combustion air intake and exhaust, and you you give the heater a full power burn at season end to burn off any excess carbon, and you use hard nylon on the fuel delivery side, and not the cheap soft plastic fuel hose supplied now with some heaters, you will get many years of use without a service. As a personal example, I still have had no need to service the heater in our boat after 10 years of use. Eight of those shoulder season use, and two full time winter living. The big issue with these heaters is carbon formation in the burner and atomisation screens. Carbon is formed by incomplete combustion caused by restrictions in the exhaust and combustion air inlet, and the use of soft fuel hose. Other issues I have come across are bugs etc sucked into the heater (no filter) and they get stuck in the very tiny hole to the glow plug screen. Diesel gelling in winter can cause fuel pump failure, and I suggest a high kerro diesel mix in very cold climates. I have no personal experience with diesel anti gel additives. Burning any “oil” products in these heaters causes excessive carbon deposits. Using the heater at high altitude (low oxygen) without adaption causes carbon buildup and more frequent servicing. The main servicing requirement is carbon removal from the burner and atomisation screens. Cheers. JMcK

Hi haydenslides, They are a very common roof gutter downpipe connection in Australia. I do not know how you join downpipes to gutters in the US. Perhaps a better solution for you, could be to get some 2 inch thin flat bar steel and roll it into a 4 or 5 inch circle, or even bend it into a square around the same dimensions and get it tack welded to the heater base plate. That is what I normally do, but I have a bender and welder. The gutter downpipe connector is a simple way for a DIY person without access to a welder. Cheers. JMcK

@johnmck1147 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, In the past it was very simple. Just swap controllers around. The different Chinese manufactures used the same wiring protocol with the same plugs. However lately some manufactures have been doing things there own way, and this is not so easy anymore. The old standard wiring had a controller with a triangle plug with 3 wires, positive, negative, and sense wires. Generally red, black and blue. If you have this just swap controllers. But check the wires match up. Sometimes the power wires can be reversed, and you need to swap the wires. Sometimes the whole setup is proprietary and there is not much you can do. I now advise people to buy a heater that comes with the controller you desire. I hope this helps. JMcK

Hi Marcus, it is personal preference. You can duct if you wish. If sucking from inside an enclosure, like under the seat you need ducts in the seat. John I have viewed your videos sometime ago and can't remember if you had tried running these heaters on gasoline. Have tried? do they work? what are the pitfalls? Thanks
@johnmck1147
@johnmck1147 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Bradley, These heaters are designed to run on Diesel. To try running them on gasoline/petrol would be highly unsafe. There is occasionally some diesel residue left in the burner chamber, and even in the exhaust. It just takes the right fuel air mix to have a potential bomb waiting for the next start. A few people have tried gasoline in these heaters and I have seen a KZfaq video posted on one channel. He could not get the heater to run properly, more a process of small explosions. I think he is still alive. Having said that. You can buy a genuine Eberspacher gasoline version of these heaters, which is designed to run on gasoline. I also believe one Chinese manufacturer makes a gasoline version and one was bought by a subscribed viewer. His latest email to me was he just could not get it to run properly and has given up, and now ordered a diesel heater. Be aware of some eBay sellers advertising "gasoline" heaters. They often have little understanding of the product they sell and are just marketing people. They see on the box or in the "Chinese English" manual that the heaters run on gasoil (which means diesel) and advertise incorrectly that the heaters will run on gasoline. Cheers. JMcK

Hi, Great videos and lots of very useful information. I'm starting on a camper conversion, the living space is not huge and a 2kW diesel heater would probably do fine. Am I better off with a 2kW one or can a 5kW be effectively down tuned to 2kW? As I've heard that the 5kw is likely to be quieter at low power levels and has a better (larger) motherboard? Thanks Ron
@johnmck1147
@johnmck1147 4 ай бұрын
Hi Ron It is nearly always better to have a bigger heater running slow rather than a small heater running flat out. The most noise comes from a high fan and pump speed. The heater size depends on a lot of variables, eg volume to heat, insulation, outside temp, heating fresh air or recirculating, etc etc, so I can't give you a definitive answer. However in most small van conversions, a 2 Kw heater should be fine. With the install just make sure you have space for a bigger heater if needed. With these Chinese Heaters, the 2 Kw, 5 Kw & 8 Kw all have the same footprint and connections, so swapping one out for the other is very easy if you leave space. JMcK

Hi John and thanks for replying. So, would you say that in general a 5kW on its lowest heat setting be about equivalent to the lowest heat setting on a 2kW? If I got a 5kW and ran it low would I get problems with soot/crud build up in its combustion chamber? If I did then would the occasional full power burn up maintain this? Thanks Ron@@johnmck1147
@johnmck1147
@johnmck1147 4 ай бұрын
Hi Ron, I think you have a misprint. Very roughly, the LOWEST setting on a 5Kw is similar to the HIGHEST setting on a 2Kw heater. Yes, you do have soot issues running very slow, so every day or so, run the heater at high power for 30 seconds to a minute or so to burn off any carbon. The less restrictions in your install, the less you need to do a carbon burn. I only do a carbon burn once a week on the boat. JMcK

Hi John and many thanks. Actually I was asking whether the lowest setting on both heaters gave the same output. Your answer clears up the claim from other internet sources that the lowest power output level of a 5kW is equal to the lowest power output level of a 2kW. This claim was trying to explain why there were fewer 2kW heaters on the market and more 5kW versions. If the lowest output from a 5kW is actually around 2kW then this would cook us once the van had reached a comfortable temperature. We'll be better off with a 2kW with its lowest power output around the 1kW mark. Thanks Ron.@@johnmck1147

Hi DL, I really need more info before I can offer an opinion here. How big is your vehicle, what type of insulation, what outside temperatures do you encounter etc etc. This 7 meter motorhome is constructed of a foam composite panel approx 50 mm thick, and operates in a local environment with night temperatures down to about 1°C. A 2kw heater would do the job, but it would need to run at a high setting. My belief is unlike most other commentators, in that I believe it is better to have a larger heater running slower, rather than a smaller running flat out, consequently I installed a 5 kw heater in this vehicle, and it keeps the vehicle warm at a Hz setting of about 2. I ran the heater for a couple hours at 4.0 ran great then turned it off. The next day I fired it up and a lot of white smoke cam billowing out the end of exhaust pipe? Any ideas what the problem may be. I've tried it a couple of times and same results. Maybe the extension pipe to long?? If you could help that would be greatly appreciated!
@johnmck1147
@johnmck1147 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kandy, These heaters only have a tiny combustion air fan and as such they do not like any restrictions in the combustion air intake, or the exhaust. If you increase the exhaust length or put tight bends in the exhaust you cause a restriction that interferes with the fuel air burn ratio. White smoke indicates unburnt fuel in the system. In normal running these heaters are very clean running and there is no real need to have the exhaust exit fully under the vehicle. You did not say how long the exhaust pipe was or whether the white smoke stopped quickly after starting the heater. If it stops shortly after start up you could probably live with it if you don't want to shorten the exhaust. If it does not stop shortly after start you could shorten the exhaust or increase the diameter of the exhaust pipe. Eg use some car exhaust, bought new or used from a wrecker.. If you shorten the exhaust and it does not exit from under the vehicle, make sure you install a CO detector in the accommodation area. This generally for peace of mind. I have never seen one of these heaters set off the alam on a CO detector. JMcK
