The Kainji Hydropower project, constructed in the late 1960s, has suffered damage over the years. Chinese experts have been enlisted to conduct extensive repair work, with a team of 23 divers arriving at Kainji in March to commence the intricate repair process, aiming for completion within three months.

It's disheartening to witness Nigeria's missed opportunities in investing in knowledge. China's involvement highlights this gap, as there seems to be a lack of Nigerian representation in projects where knowledge transfer could occur. Relying solely on foreign expertise without a strategy for knowledge acquisition perpetuates the cycle of dependence.

Does this mean Nigeria does not have trained divers that could have cleaned out the debris out initially? Did Nigeria mandate that Nigerian divers and engineer be included in this task? How will Nigeria be able to do this work in the future if China is not mandated to include Nigerians to fix this? What a miss opportunity.

We are not actually selfish though. As you put it, its all in leadership and management. Our politics is based on popularism and not policies. So when we need real leadership we only get people that solve the symptoms and not the source. Unfortunately a family friend also is a diver in Nigeria and he too is not from there. It seems our leaders are all quick to outsource instead of integrating. What makes Europe/America great is that they integrate the skills they lack in. In Nigeria there should be divers that are sourced permanently as strategic employees that will also train the next generation at home. All the best to all of us

It's unfortunate that some Nigerians think China is doing Nigeria a favor, far from that China and Chinese companies have economic and to a large extent political interest. In this situations, you don't have a permanent enemy or friend, but a permanent interest. China is a Nation with Political and Economic interest like any other Nation around the world, and you all need to understand China and its companies are not doing Nigeria any favor period!. If China/companies from China, did not win the contract to "assist" certainly other companies from other countries would do that and it is not free. China and it's companies are not social welfare agencies, they are profit making in nature and in all they do. Wake up!
