Fewer and fewer people in China are willing to farm for a living, posing a threat to the food security of the world’s most populous nation. The Chinese central government has stressed the issue as a top priority for many years to avoid a potential food crisis. The Post visited one of the major grain-producing areas in central China and asked village residents why they have grown reluctant to continue with farming.

Lots of farmers want to give up and one of them was my family, this is the only job that they have but due to low price of rice they need to sell the farm land this year 😓🥲 I hope all government in every country support farmers to avoid high prices of necessities but all of them were corrupt it's really unfair for those who work hard. 💔😿

Definitely not easy to be a farmer. There’s a Chinese saying, that farmers rely on the heaven for the next harvest to put food on the table. No matter how hardworking the folks are, the condition of the soil, a single drought can wipe out all the efforts of the farming team’s whole year efforts. Hope all governments, regardless of political mindsets, would set out policies to help out the farmers to mitigate their losses in times of hardships, and measures to fight extreme whether conditions by coming up with contingency plans. More reservoirs, storm water collection, pumping stations for irrigations etc.

That's strongly dependant on region. Here in the Netherlands the average farmer wakes up by 10, grabs his phone to see if the feeding robots still work, walks outside to shout abuse at the eastern European migrant workers who do all the work for him, and by the time he finished breakfast, he had made a bigger profit than I do in a week of work. Just to warn you, guys and gals. There's a massive winter drought in central Europe, where things haven't improved since last years worst drought in 500 years. Rivers, used for irrigation, are at 20% of ordinairy water levels and there hasn't been much snow in the mountains. EU is a massive food producer and exporter but with high fertilizer and energy cost this year ban on food exports is to be expected. Only surplus will be allowed to be sent outside EU, but I doubt there will be any. Drought is also in South East of the USA, also massive food hub, dependent on irrigation. There isn't much to expect from Russia and Ukraine, either. Grow your own food, if you can. Huge hunger is coming if this conditons are about to go on and on...

@@misterbig9025 step one: move to NEFA. New Delhi is as crowded as NYC. Where would you find the space to farm anything? It's not like you can move just a few km. The suburbs around it, and even Old Delhi is even worse. Unlike China, Google is in India. So we get streetview. I looked at it in Google Earth, and it's just a depressing endless expanse of overcrowded tiny homes jamned up against each other on streets so narrow, many were too tight for the Google car to even get in, so we can only peer in from the street junctions.

It's the same everywhere. Societies have, over the past few hundreds of years, increasingly denigrated farmers, looked down on them, and called them a myriad condescending names. Society has viewed them as second class citizens. Politicians pander to the urban masses, as that's where the votes are. The urban demographic lives very differently, yet their opinions are forced on the rural demographic through laws. Resources and services also flow to the cities, leaving farmers without the same level of health care, internet, etc. As a final insult, the farmers work has almost no value compared to the urban demographic. Your average paper pusher make well over double what a farmer makes when comparing hourly income. So, with this in mind, why are the people in government surprised as this trend develops?

Sadly farming is the most productive and profitable when its one person owning 100s of acres of land. An economist from my country said "the only way to help farmers is to have fewer off them". Of course I would much prefer families owning 10 - 20 acres of land and investing in durable machinery so that they can farm enough to feed themselves and sell a moderate surplus without breaking their backs.

In settled regions, the HIE (heat island effect) affects the local weather about 10x stronger than underlying global weather phenomena. Especially heat spikes and lack of rainfall are directly linked to thermal effects around overbuilt areas. This effect of overbuilt area on rainfall can be nicely observed around a city like Munich (moderate climate, stable wind conditions) - Munich has a WET and a DRY side: the Southern part gets all the rain while the thermal updrafts from the city itself are preventing daytime rainfall in the North. Our building activity has created a lot of those hot-spots preventing humid air from reaching farmland in the proximity of cities and megacities while pumping up increasing amounts of ground water. The fact that many rivers (like the Rideau river and the Ottawa river) show the same amount of annual discharge despite lower rainfall, clearly indicates that not enough rainwater is allowed to reach the soil.
@marcinwojtkowski2580

@@paulbedichek5177 I live in east anglia so im well aware that a lot of the land was reclaimed. That doesnt have anything to do with no rainfall for over 90 days, that isnt normal for England over the summer and the 'wells' were getting very low by october there had still been very little rain and not to mention seasonally high temperatures left the water table drastically low. Also thsoe areas of 'reclaimed land are in east anglia and essex which are already considered semi arid regions due to low rain fall generally. Increasing summer temperatures and mild winters with very low rain fall has a huge impact on the water availability, i actually work outside all year round and have seasonal work so im very aware of the increase in temperatures less rainfall and milder winters.

My advice is, if you fear for the future, start growing food yourself. You can do it in your window, on the roof, on the balcony, in your garden, use flowerbeds, etc. Or move out of the big cities to places where this is possible if you have the option. Food shortage all over the world is bound to come sooner or later, as everything farmers require are either too expensive to get or it is a problem with the weather. And the science is settled on what’s happening aka climate change is happening and what’s causing it. But we’re moving into uncharted territory, I constantly see stuff that says “happening faster than predicted” but another unexpected observation is deserts turning green. The key is it’s becoming less stable, more unpredictable. Agriculture requires stability, civilisation requires stability.
