On the fifteen day of the Dragon Year, 24/2/2024, the Chinese Association of Southampton (CAS) celebrated the Chinese Lantern Festival at Eastleigh.
At Eastleigh marketplace, the sight of two Chinese dragons and a majestic lion, amidst the thunderous beat of drums and gongs, enthralled hundreds of spectators during this momentous celebration, marking the conclusion of our 15-day Chinese New Year festivities. Despite the rain accompanying the dragons, the enchanting displays of dragon and lion dances persisted, delivering a magnificent spectacle. Subsequently, Mayor Cllr. Nick Couldrey, carrying the dragon ball, led the dragons and lion to the Age Concern building to engage in the indoor festivities.
Inside the Age Concern building, an array of splendid Chinese cultural performances and diverse art workshops awaited the audience. CAS initiated the proceedings with flute and drum performances. Subsequently, the chair and vice-chair of CAS, as well as the Mayor of Eastleigh extended their blessings, fostering a jubilant atmosphere. The ensuing performances featured awe-inspiring lion dances, spectacular martial arts displays, graceful Taichi performances, captivating Chinese dances, melodious Chinese music performances, exquisite violin renditions and energetic line dancing. These captivating programs offered a vibrant cultural experience, leaving attendees with cherished memories of the Chinese Lantern Festival celebration.
Enhancing the vibrant atmosphere, attendees were invited to partake in an array of engaging activities. The Confucius Institute at the University of Southampton hosted cultural workshops featuring dragon crafting, paper cutting, and lantern crafting, providing hands-on experiences of traditional Chinese arts. Meanwhile, a CAS member facilitated a lively Go-game session, offering a taste of ancient Chinese pastimes. Additionally, in collaboration with CAS, the Asian Welfare and Cultural Association (AWCA) provided a ribbon-on-stick workshop, contributing to the event's diverse offerings.
