Lion dance (舞獅) is a form of traditional dance in Chinese culture and other Asian countries in which performers mimic a lion's movements in a lion costume to bring good luck and fortune as well as vanquish evil.
During the Han Dynasty (202 BCE-220 CE), emissaries from Persian and Central Asia gifted the emperor with lions. Each performance begins and ends with a bowing ceremony. The music is provided by a large Chinese drum, several sets of cymbals, and a heavy gong. The dance is not choreographed to the music; instead, the musicians follow the dancers' movements. Usually, two dancers perform as the lion. One dancer carries the head; the other becomes the lion's tail.
Chinese Malaysians invented the extreme sport of high pole lion dancing, as shown in this video. Previously, the dance was performed on the ground around an obstacle course of chairs, balance beams, or upturned vases.
