Lima-born Luis Yong is a medical doctor who took over a rundown restaurant, San Joy Lao, in the city’s Chinatown. The charming and outgoing doctor hosts Chinese cooking shows on TV and promotes the marriage of holistic Chinese medicine and health-conscious Chinese cuisine. As Peru celebrated the 150th anniversary of the arrival of Chinese coolies, and as subsequent generations of Chinese focus on the importance of education, Yong is becoming a legend in Lima’s rejuvenated Barrio Chino.

Great video. I’ve been so interested in the history of the Chinese in Peru because of how much they integrated the culture over the years.

Very touching episode. Real testimony from Maria Liu, not the dream she thought and dealing with bullying from a foreign land.

@@87yugo74 Hi! Her story was sad but i assure you theres no bullying towards asian or any "minority" because we're a multicultural country we're all inmigrants. We dont care if youre of japanese, chinese, italian descent if you are born in this country youre peruvian. ps.- My grandparents were chinese and my maternal last name is italian.

@@imafillerbunny The country of Peru is great in many respects. It is rich in natural resources, but of course, there is discrimination, like there is in any country since the beginning of time. Yes, Peru, has people of every race, and in places like that there is more racism and discrimination. The Chinese discriminates against the white, the Native American Indian discriminates against the black African descent, and so on. Keiko Fujimori, who is of Japanese descent constantly gets insulted because of her race, the Afro-Peruvians are very much discriminated. It is just the way the world is. It is not only in Peru. It happens in Africa; black people can also be racist. It happens in Asia; Asians also can be racist. So, it is important to have laws that are enforced to even out the society, but it is not going to make it disappear.

Cool video! Kind of old but I'm glad I found it. I think there's so many more stories to tell about Chinese in Peru outside of the Chifas. And actually each Chifa in Peru might also just come with some huge history behind them. What comes to mind are stores like Tai Loy, Mercado Wong, and even the Chinese schools in Lima or the new "chinatown" in San Borjas.

Just a quick note: When Mr. Yong talks about the sixth flavor "ma," he's referring to the sensation of "numbness," commonly associated with "ma la" in Sichuan cuisine. The term "umami" you mentioned in your book should actually be "xian" in Chinese.
@cheukkwan

You are right about xian in Chinese for umami. But Mr. Yong indicated to me the "ma" is actually umami. (I don't know why he used the word "ma" may be it's a Peruvian usage?

I'm surprised you didn't mention how Chinese food has influenced Peruvian cooking. The Lomo Saltado is obviously a variation of stir fried beef with peppers, and "arroz chaufa" is Cantonese fried rice.

Arroz chaufa is fried rice. Lomo saltado is stir-fried beef. Just with Peruvian twist. Chifa cooking is essentially Chinese food Peruvian style.

The Spanish had nothing to do with Chinese immigration to Peru. Peru declared its independence in 1821 and the first Chinese immigrants arrived in 1849.
